Relativistic hybrid stars in light of the NICER PSR J0740 + 6620 radius measurement

We explore the implications of the recent radius determination of PSR J0740 + 6620 by the NICER experiment, combined with the neutron skin measurement by the PREX-II experiment and the associated inference of the slope of symmetry energy, for the structure of hybrid stars with a strong first-order phase transition from nucleonic to quark matter. Furthermore, we combine a covariant density-functional nucleonic equation of state (EOS) with a constant-speed-of-sound EOS for quark matter. We show that the radius and tidal deformability ranges obtained from GW170817 can be reconciled with the implication of the PREX-II experiment if there is a phase transition to quark matter in the low-mass compact star. In the high-mass segment, the EOS needs to be stiff to comply with the large-radius inference for PSR J0740 + 6620 and J0030 + 0451 with masses M ≃ 2 M ⊙ and M≃1.4 M⊙. We show that twin stars are not excluded, but the mass and radius ranges (with M ≥ M ⊙ ) are restricted to narrow domains ΔM twin ≲ 0.05 M ⊙ and ΔR twin ~ 1.0 km. We also show that the existence of twin configurations is compatible with the light companion in the GW190814 event being a hybrid star in the case of values of the sound-speed square s = 0.6 and s = 1/3.

Extraction of low-energy constants of single- and double-β decays from lattice QCD: A sensitivity analysis

Lattice quantum chromodynamics (LQCD) has the promise of constraining low-energy constants (LECs) of nuclear effective field theories (EFTs) from first-principles calculations that incorporate the dynamics of quarks and gluons. Given the Euclidean and finite-volume nature of LQCD outputs, complex mappings are developed in recent years to obtain the Minkowski and infinite-volume counterparts of LQCD observables. In particular, as LQCD is moving toward computing a set of important few-nucleon matrix elements at the physical values of the quark masses, it is important to investigate whether the anticipated precision of LQCD spectra and matrix elements will be sufficient to guarantee tighter constraints on the relevant LECs than those already obtained from phenomenology, considering the nontrivial mappings involved. With a focus on the leading-order LECs of the pionless EFT, L 1,A and $g$$^{NN}_{v}$, which parametrize, respectively, the strength of the isovector axial two-body current in a single-β decay (and other related processes such pp fusion), and of the isotensor contact two-body operator in the neutrinoless double-β decay within the light neutrino exchange scenario, the expected uncertainty on future extractions of L 1,A and $g$$^{NN}_{v}$ are examined using synthetic data at the physical values of the quark masses. It is observed that achieving small uncertainties in L 1,A will be challenging, and (sub)percent-level precision in the two-nucleon spectra and matrix elements is essential in reducing the uncertainty on this LEC compared to the existing constraints. On the other hand, the short-distance coupling of the neutrinoless double-β decay, $g$$^{NN}_{v}$, is shown to be less sensitive to uncertainties on both LQCD energies and the matrix element, and can likely be constrained with percent-level precision in the upcoming LQCD calculations.

Octet and decuplet baryon σ terms and mass decompositions

We present a comprehensive analysis of the SU(3) octet and decuplet baryon masses and σ terms using high-precision lattice QCD data and chiral SU(3) effective theory with finite range regularization. The effects of various systematic uncertainties, including from the scale setting of the lattice data and the regularization prescriptions, are quantified. We find the pion-nucleon and strange nucleon σ terms to be σ πN = 44(3)(3) MeV and σ Ns = 50(6)(1) MeV, respectively. Furthermore, the results provide constraints on the energy-momentum tensor mass decompositions of the SU(3) octet and decuplet baryons, where we find that the trace anomaly and quark-gluon energies decrease for strange baryons due to their larger strange σ terms.

Fluctuations and correlations of baryonic chiral partners

The exploration of critical phenomena in phase transitions of strongly interacting matter governed by quantum chromodynamics (QCD) is one of the goals of present ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collision experiments at BNL and CERN. The key research direction is to locate the putative critical point on the phase diagram of QCD linked to the chiral symmetry restoration at finite temperature and/or density. One of the main theoretical tools used for this purpose is the fluctuations of conserved charges, such as the net-baryon number. However, due to experimental limitations, analyses of heavy-ion collision data suffer from a very doubtful basing of the net-proton number being a proxy for the total net-baryon number fluctuations. In this work, we use the parity doublet model to investigate the fluctuations of the net-baryon number density in hot and dense hadronic matter. The model accounts for chiral criticality within the mean-field approximation. We focus on the qualitative properties and systematics of the first- and second-order susceptibility of the net-baryon number density, and their ratios for nucleons of positive and negative parity, as well as their correlator. We show that the fluctuations of the positive-parity nucleon do not necessarily reflect the fluctuations of the total net-baryon number density at the phase boundary of the chiral phase transition. We also investigate the nontrivial structure of the correlator. Furthermore, we discuss and quantify the differences between the fluctuations of the net-baryon number density in the vicinity of the chiral and liquid-gas phase transition in nuclear matter. We indicate a possible relevance of our results with the interpretation of the experimental data on net-proton number fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions. First simultaneous global QCD analysis of dihadron fragmentation functions and transversity parton distribution functions

We perform a comprehensive study within quantum chromodynamics (QCD) of dihadron observables in electron-positron annihilation, semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, and proton-proton collisions, including recent cross section data from Belle and azimuthal asymmetries from STAR. We extract simultaneously for the first time π + π − dihadron fragmentation functions (DiFFs) and the nucleon transversity distributions for up and down quarks as well as antiquarks. For the transversity distributions we impose their small- x asymptotic behavior and the Soffer bound. In addition, we utilize a new definition of DiFFs that has a number density interpretation to then calculate expectation values for the dihadron invariant mass and momentum fraction. Furthermore, we investigate the compatibility of our transversity results with those from single-hadron fragmentation (from a transverse momentum dependent/collinear twist-3 framework) and the nucleon tensor charges computed in lattice QCD. We find a universal nature to all of this available information. Future measurements of dihadron production can significantly further this research, especially, as we show, those that are sensitive to the region of large parton momentum fractions. Trace anomaly form factors from lattice QCD

The hadron mass can be obtained through the calculation of the trace of the energy-momentum tensor in the hadron which includes the trace anomaly and sigma terms. The anomaly due to conformal symmetry breaking is believed to be an important ingredient for hadron mass generation and confinement. In this work, we will present the calculation of the glue part of the trace anomaly form factors of the pion up to Q 2 ∼ 4.3 GeV 2 and the nucleon up to Q 2 ∼ 1 GeV 2 . The calculations are performed on a domain wall fermion ensemble with overlap valence quarks at seven valence pion masses varying from ∼ 250 to ∼ 540 MeV , including the unitary point ∼ 340 MeV . We calculate the radius of the glue trace anomaly for the pion and the nucleon from the z expansion. By performing a two-dimensional Fourier transform on the glue trace anomaly form factors in the infinite momentum frame with no energy transfer, we also obtain their spatial distributions for several valence quark masses. The results are qualitatively extrapolated to the physical valence pion mass with systematic errors from the unphysical sea quark mass, discretization effects in the renormalization sum rule, and finite-volume effects to be addressed in the future. We find the pion’s form factor changes sign, as does its spatial distribution, for light quark masses. This explains how the trace anomaly contribution to the pion mass approaches zero toward the chiral limit. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Energy dependent nuclear suppression from gluon saturation in exclusive vector meson production

We calculate exclusive J / ψ photoproduction at high energies in the color glass condensate approach. The results are compared to the center-of-mass energy dependent γ + A → J / ψ + A cross sections extracted from measurements in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. We predict strong saturation-driven nuclear suppression at high energies, while LHC data prefer even stronger suppression. We explore effects of nucleon shaped fluctuations and show that the most recent measurement of the | t | -differential incoherent J / ψ cross section prefers large event-by-event fluctuations of the nucleon substructure in heavy nuclei, comparable to that found for a free proton. Generalized parton distributions from the pseudodistribution approach on the lattice

Generalized parton distributions (GPDs) are key quantities for the description of a hadron’s three-dimensional structure. They are the current focus of all areas of hadronic physics—phenomenological, experimental and theoretical, including lattice QCD. Synergies between these areas are desirable and essential to achieve precise quantification and understanding of the structure of, particularly, nucleons, as the basic ingredients of matter. In this paper, we investigate, for the first time, the numerical implementation of the pseudodistribution approach for the extraction of zero-skewness GPDs for unpolarized quarks. Pseudodistributions are Euclidean parton correlators computable in lattice QCD that can be perturbatively matched to the light-cone parton distributions of interest. Although they are closely related to the quasidistributions and come from the same lattice-extracted matrix elements, they are, however, subject to different systematic effects. We use the data previously utilized for quasi-GPDs and extend it with other momentum transfers and nucleon boosts, in particular a higher one ( P 3 = 1.67 GeV ) with eightfold larger statistics than the largest one used for quasidistributions ( P 3 = 1.25 GeV ). We renormalize the matrix elements with a ratio scheme and match the resulting Ioffe time distributions to the light cone in coordinate space. The matched distributions are then used to reconstruct the x dependence with a fitting . We investigate some systematic effects related to this procedure, and we also compare the results with the ones obtained in the framework of quasi-GPDs. Our final results involve the invariant four-momentum transfer squared ( − t ) dependence of the flavor nonsinglet ( u − d ) H and E GPDs. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Observation of double J / ψ meson production in p Pb collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV

The first observation of the concurrent production of two J / ψ mesons in proton-nucleus collisions is presented. The analysis is based on a proton-lead ( p Pb ) data sample recorded at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 8.16 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 174.6 nb − 1 . The two J / ψ mesons are reconstructed in their μ + μ − decay channels with transverse momenta p T > 6.5 GeV and rapidity | y | < 2.4 . Events where one of the J / ψ mesons is reconstructed in the dielectron channel are also considered in the search. The p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X process is observed with a significance of 5.3 standard deviations. The measured inclusive fiducial cross section, using the four-muon channel alone, is σ ( p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X ) = 22.0 ± 8.9 ( stat ) ± 1.5 ( syst ) nb . A fit of the data to the expected rapidity separation for pairs of J / ψ mesons produced in single (SPS) and double (DPS) parton scatterings yields σ SPS p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X = 16.5 ± 10.8 ( stat ) ± 0.1 ( syst ) nb and σ DPS p Pb → J / ψ J / ψ + X = 5.4 ± 6.2 ( stat ) ± 0.4 ( syst ) nb , respectively. This latter result can be transformed into a lower bound on the effective DPS cross section, closely related to the squared average interparton transverse separation in the collision, of σ eff > 1.0 mb at 95% confidence level. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Revisiting gauge invariance and Reggeization of pion exchange

The Reggeized pion is expected to provide the main contribution to the forward cross section in light meson photoproduction reactions with charge exchange at high energies. We discuss the Reggeization of pion exchange in charged pion photoproduction with an emphasis on consistency with current conservation. We show that the gauge-invariant amplitude for the exchange of a particle with a generic even spin J ≥ 2 in the t channel is analytic at J = 0 and that it can be interpreted in terms of the nucleon electric current. This enables us to reconcile the dynamics in the s and u channel, which involves also nucleon exchanges, with the amplitude expressed in terms of t -channel partial waves, as required by Regge theory. Observation of strangeness enhancement with charmed mesons in high-multiplicity p Pb collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV

The production of prompt D s + and D + mesons is measured by the LHCb experiment in proton-lead ( p Pb ) collisions in both the forward ( 1.5 < y * < 4.0 ) and backward ( − 5.0 < y * < − 2.5 ) rapidity regions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of s NN = 8.16 TeV . The nuclear modification factors of both D s + and D + mesons are determined as a function of transverse momentum, p T , and rapidity. In addition, the D s + to D + cross section ratio is measured as a function of the primary charged particle multiplicity in the event. An enhanced D s + to D + production in high-multiplicity events is observed for the whole measured p T range, in particular at low p T and backward rapidity, where the significance exceeds six standard deviations. This constitutes the first observation of strangeness enhancement in charm quark hadronization in high-multiplicity p Pb collisions. The results are also qualitatively consistent with the presence of quark coalescence as an additional charm quark hadronization mechanism in high-multiplicity proton-lead collisions. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Effects of Landau quantization on neutrino emission and absorption

Some neutron stars known as magnetars possess very strong magnetic fields, with surface fields as large as 10 15 G and internal fields that are possibly stronger. Recent observations of the radio pulsar GLEAM-X J1627 suggest it may have a surface field as strong as 10 16 G. In the presence of a strong magnetic field, Leinson and Perez showed and Baiko and Yakovlev confirmed that the energy levels of electrons and protons are quantized and the direct Urca process allows neutron stars to cool rapidly, even at low density. For the case of magnetic fields 𝐵 ≳ 10 16 G, we find features in the emissivity due to energy quantization that are not captured by the frequently employed quasiclassical approximation where energy levels are treated as nearly continuous. Resonances can result in amplification of the neutrino emissivity at specific densities compared to a calculation that neglects quantization, particularly at low temperature. These effects are not important for the thermal evolution of an entire neutron star, but may be relevant for phenomena that depend on behavior at specific densities. Here, we present a fully relativistic calculation of the direct Urca rate in a strong magnetic field using the standard V-A weak Lagrangian incorporating mean field nuclear effects and discuss approaches to the numerical challenge the modified wave functions present and a new semianalytic approximation. These tools are also applicable to calculating neutrino opacities in strong magnetic fields in the ejecta of binary neutron star mergers. We calculate the opacities for neutrinos capturing on free nucleons at subsaturation densities and temperatures exceeding an MeV. We find an enhancement to capture processes of the lowest energy neutrinos by an order of magnitude or more due to suppression of electron Pauli blocking in the case of capture on neutrons, and from the effect of the nucleon magnetic moments in the case of capture on protons.

Tagging efficiency study of incoherent diffractive vector meson production at the second interaction region at the Electron-Ion Collider

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) is an upcoming accelerator facility aimed at exploring the properties of quarks and gluons in nucleons and nuclei, shedding light on their structure and dynamics. The inaugural experimental apparatus, ePIC (electron-Proton and Ion Collider), is designed as a general-purpose detector to address the National Academy of Sciences and the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee physics program at the EIC. The wider EIC community is strongly supporting a second interaction region and an associated second detector to enhance the full science program. In this study, we evaluate how this second interaction region and detector can be complementary to ePIC. The layout of an interaction region for the second detector offers a secondary focus that provides better forward detector acceptance at scattering angles near θ ~ 0 mrad, which can specifically enhance the exclusive, tagging, and diffractive physics program. Here, this article presents an analysis of a tagging program using the second interaction region layout with incoherent diffractive vector meson production. The current design of the second EIC interaction region is evaluated for its vetoing capabilities of incoherent events required for the study of coherent diffractive measurements. We find an increased vetoing performance compared to the ePIC interaction region, thus improving measurements which are important for the spatial imaging of nucleons and nuclei.

Chiral-odd generalized parton distributions in the large-𝑁 𝑐 limit of QCD: Spin-flavor structure, polynomiality, and sum rules

We study the nonperturbative properties of the nucleon’s chiral-odd generalized parton distributions (transversity GPDs) in the large-𝑁 𝑐 limit of QCD. This includes the parametric ordering of the spin-flavor components, the polynomiality property of the moments, and the sum rules connecting the GPDs with the tensor form factors. A multipole expansion in the transverse momentum transfer is used to enumerate and interpret the structures in the nucleon matrix element of the chiral-odd partonic operator, including monopole, dipole and quadrupole terms. The 1/𝑁 𝑐 expansion of the GPDs is performed using the abstract mean-field picture of baryons in the large-𝑁 𝑐 limit and its symmetries. We derive a large-𝑁 𝑐 relation between the flavor-nonsinglet GPDs 𝐸$^{𝑢−𝑑}_𝑇$ and $\tilde{𝐻}^{𝑢−𝑑}_𝑇$ and test it with recent lattice QCD results. We show that the polynomiality property and sum rules of the GPDs are fulfilled with the restricted realization of translational and rotational invariance in the mean-field picture. The results provide a basis for the phenomenological analysis of chiral-odd GPDs and hard exclusive processes in the large-𝑁 𝑐 limit, and for calculations in specific dynamical models.

Neutron Valence Structure from Nuclear Deep Inelastic Scattering

Mechanisms of spin-flavor SU(6) symmetry breaking in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) are studied via an extraction of the free neutron structure function from a global analysis of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) data on the proton and on nuclei from $A = 2$ (deuterium) to 208 (lead). Modification of the structure function of nucleons bound in atomic nuclei (known as the EMC effect) are consistently accounted for within the framework of a universal modification of nucleons in short-range correlated (SRC) pairs. Our extracted neutron-to-proton structure function ratio $F_2^n/F_2^p$ becomes constant for $x_B \ge 0.6$, equalling $0.47 \pm 0.04$ as $x_B \rightarrow 1$, in agreement with theoretical predictions of perturbative QCD and the Dyson Schwinger equation, and in disagreement with predictions of the Scalar Diquark dominance model. Finally, we also predict $F_2^{^3\mathrm{He}}/F_2^{^3\mathrm{H}}$, recently measured, yet unpublished, by the MARATHON collaboration, the nuclear correction function that is needed to extract $F_2^n/F_2^p$ from $F_2^{^3\mathrm{He}}/F_2^{^3\mathrm{H}}$, and the theoretical uncertainty associated with this extraction.

Studies of charm quark diffusion inside jets using PbPb and pp collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} =$ 5.02 TeV

The first study of charm quark diffusion with respect to the jet axis in heavy ion collisions is presented. The measurement is performed using jets with $p^{jet}_T > 60 GeV / c$ and $D^0$ mesons with $p^D_T > 4 GeV / c$ in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) and proton-proton ($pp$) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02 TeV$, recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. The radial distribution of $D^0$ mesons with respect to the jet axis is sensitive to the production mechanisms of the meson, as well as to the energy loss and diffusion processes undergone by its parent parton inside the strongly interacting medium produced in Pb-Pb collisions. When compared to Monte Carlo event generators, the radial distribution in $pp$ collisions is found to be well described by pythia, while the slope of the distribution predicted by sherpa is steeper than that of the data. In Pb-Pb collisions, compared to the $pp$ results, the $D^0$ meson distribution for $4 < p^D_T < 20 GeV / c$ hints at a larger distance on average with respect to the jet axis, reflecting a diffusion of charm quarks in the medium created in heavy ion collisions. At higher $p^D_T$, the Pb-Pb and $pp$ radial distributions are found to be similar.

Toward Complete Leading-Order Predictions for Neutrinoless Double β Decay

The amplitude for the neutrinoless double β (0νββ) decay of the two-neutron system nn → ppe – e – constitutes a key building block for nuclear-structure calculations of heavy nuclei employed in large-scale 0νββ searches. Assuming that the 0νββ process is mediated by a light-Majorana-neutrino exchange, a systematic analysis in chiral effective field theory shows that already at leading order a contact operator is required to ensure renormalizability. Here, we develop a method to estimate the numerical value of its coefficient (in analogy to the Cottingham formula for electromagnetic contributions to hadron masses) and validate the result by reproducing the charge-independence-breaking contribution to the nucleon-nucleon scattering lengths. Our central result, while derived in dimensional regularization, is given in terms of the renormalized amplitude Aν(|p|, |p'|) , matching to which will allow one to determine the contact-term contribution in regularization schemes employed in nuclear-structure calculations. Our results thus greatly reduce a crucial uncertainty in the interpretation of searches for 0νββ decay.
