Folded Optical Design for High Fidelity Atmospheric Emulation With A Spatial Light Modulator

Atmospheric emulators based on spatial light modulators offer the ability to test atmospheric propagation effects on a laser communication component’s performance in the laboratory setting. To create a high-fidelity atmospheric emulator, details of the optical design are key. This paper discusses the optical design choices and refinements that enabled the creation of a system that was verified to recreate multi-layer turbulence with high fidelity up to D/r0 =50. Optical design choices that affect the fidelity discussed in this paper include the characteristics of the input laser, the spatial light modulator, the holograms, the image relay optical components, and the spatial filter. Also included in this paper is a comparison of the chosen folded optical layout to an alternative angled layout.

Computational Aerothermal Modeling and Simulation of Hypersonic, Low-density Flows for the ADEPT Drag Modulated Aerocapture Mission

NASA Ames Entry Systems and Technology Division has been leading development and testing of the Adaptable, Deployable, Entry and Placement Technology (ADEPT). A teaming partnership with JPL has been established to study and develop a compelling application of the ADEPT mechanically deployable hypersonic decelerator as part of the Venus Drag Modulated Aerocapture (VDMA) JPL R&TD effort. The primary work of this activity is to develop a design tool for the ADEPT drag skirt (e.g. a CFD-anchored CBAERO model) that enables rapid estimation of aerothermal environments for a range of candidate trajectories. This capability will enable rapid feasibility trades and design assessments for early stage mission concept evaluation for ADEPT Drag Modulated Aerocapture applications. Results of using TPSizer provided an ADEPT carbon fabric design thickness of the required number of fabric layers needed for predicted aerothermal environments and still have sufficient fabric remaining for overall vehicle integrity. This resulted in aerothermal design closure of the ADEPT drag skirt. In addition, the similar methodology for Venus DMA was used to assess a similar DMA operation at Earth as part of a possible Technology Demonstration Mission (TDM) for ADEPT DMA. This analysis showed that there is a close similarity of design approaches for an Earth DMA TDM that would be applicable to Venus DMA mission designs.

Circuit reduces distortion of FM modulator

Correction circuit improves the linearity of a voltage-variable capacitor used to modulate a free-running oscillator. This improvement only applies to audio frequency modulation and will not correct for slowly varying dc input in some telemetry systems.

Assembly jig assures reliable solar cell modules

Assembly jig holds the components for a solar cell module in place as the assembly is soldered and bonded by the even heat of an oven. The jig is designed to the configuration of the planned module. It eliminates uneven thermal conditions caused by hand soldering methods.

Rugged microelectronic module package supports circuitry on heat sink

Rugged module package for thin film hybrid microcircuits incorporated a rigid, thermally conductive support structure, which serves as a heat sink, and a lead wire block in which T-shaped electrical connectors are potted. It protects the circuitry from shock and vibration loads, dissipates internal heat, and simplifies electrical connections between adjacent modules.

Device to color modulate a stationary light beam gives high intensity

Signal controlled system color modulates a beam of light while also providing high intensity and a stationary beam, either collimated or focused. The color modulation acquired by the presented system can be compatible with any color film by employing color filters formed to provide a color wedge having a color distribution compatible with the films color sensitivity.

Light-intensity modulator withstands high heat fluxes

Mechanism modulates and controls the intensity of luminous radiation in light beams associated with high-intensity heat flux. This modulator incorporates two fluid-cooled, externally grooved, contracting metal cylinders which when rotated about their longitudinal axes present a circular aperture of varying size depending on the degree of rotation.

Method of disjoining adhesively bonded electronic cordwood modules

Embedment of resistive heating elements in a cordwood module used for packaging electronic components, facilitates separation of the adhesive bond between the module, and metal heat sink and the potting material without damaging the components. Electrical power applied to the elements causes breakdown of bonding material.

Electro-optic modulator for infrared laser using gallium arsenide crystal

Gallium arsenide electro-optic modulator used for infrared lasers has a mica quarter-wave plate and two calcite polarizers to amplitude or phase modulate an infrared laser light source in the wavelength range from 1 to 3 microns. The large single crystal has uniformly high resistivities, is strain free, and comparable in quality to good optical glass.

Optically induced free carrier light modulator

Signal carrier laser beam is optically modulated by a second laser beam of different frequency acting on a free carrier source to which the signal carrier laser is directed. The second laser beam affects the transmission characteristics of the free carrier source to light from the signal carrier laser, thus modulating it.
