Unsupervised Power System Event Detection and Classification Using Unlabeled PMU Data

This paper proposes a novel data-driven power system event detection and classification method based on 5TB of actual PMU measurements collected from the US western interconnect. Firstly, a set of comprehensive power quality rules are proposed to pre-filter the raw data and extract the regions of interest (ROI). Six distinct event categories are defined and corresponding patterns are chosen as references. Meanwhile, detailed characteristics of patterns are summarized to enhance our understanding of the actual events. Then, the time-independent feature vectors are generated by extracting the statistical, temporal, and spectral features from the raw time-series data. Furthermore, an ensemble model is proposed to cluster the events by combining multiple K-means clustering models using a voting strategy. Besides, both system-level and PMU-level clustering models are developed. The accuracy and robustness of the event detection method are further improved through interactive evaluation of the two-level clustering results. This paper summarizes the actual characteristics of each event category and provides a reliable basis for accurate label generation. The experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed event detection and classification method.

Development Of Thermodynamic and Kinetic Simulation Tools and Testing Procedures for Enhanced Durability of Concrete Containing Industrial By-Products

This project developed screening tools that enable evaluation of alternative cementitious binders that create concretes to significantly reduce energy and emissions while remaining cost competitive on both initial and long-term costs. The team began with the viewpoint that acceptance of new cementitious binder products has a substantially greater chance of successful implementation when capital investment is not excessive and the end product has customers that have experience and resources to use this. As such, a binder system that is based on portland cement with blended using industrial by-products (alternative cementitious materials) has the potential for dramatic and meaningful impact. The team has focused on developing implementable solutions in specifications and current practice. This however requires three main factors: 1) ability to screen byproducts and alternative materials for success, 2) ability to ‘treat’ materials chemically to enhance kinetics, and 3) ability to provide predictions of performance of both binders and concrete from first principles. The project developed/refined a state of the art and scientifically based screening test for SCM called the pozzolanic reactivity test. The team developed kinetic models to simulate these materials as well as experimental approaches to alter selected reactions. Simulation tools were developed that enable the performance of concrete to be predicted based on the chemistry and reactivity of the cement and alternative SCM. Specifically, this project: • enhanced the kinetic reactivity models for use in multi-scale computational programs that use thermodynamics to predict reaction products. 2 • developed scaling models to extend thermodynamic modeling to link these models with pore structure. This enables strength, transport property, and coupled transport prediction. • developed tools to predict performance of cementitious materials using the pozzolanic reactivity test and chemical composition. The predicted properties are consistent with AASHTO R101 and the CEB-FIP model code and can be measured using associated test procedures. • demonstrated mechanical and fracture based modeling tools that thermodynamic predictions and inputs to predict concrete service life. These results have been used to demonstrate the value of enabling specifications to include ASTM C 595 cement as well ASTM C150 cement. In addition, these products are being used to expedite the evaluation of alternative SCM to aide in determining which materials have potential value and what ‘compositions’ of blended cements merit further investment.

Unleashing the Power of Industrial Big Data through Scalable Manual Labeling

Big Data plays a central role in the remarkable results achieved by Machine Learning (ML) and especially Deep Learning (DL) in the recent years. However, the difficulty in obtaining a reasonable amount of labeled samples limits ML/DL application in various domains, including industrial equipment and system monitoring. In this paper the need for methods that turn manual labeling into a scalable process is highlighted. A real world problem is analyzed for which weak supervision methods, successfully employed in other domains, did not produce acceptable results. An alternative approach based on clustering ensembles is described and tested, achieving good performance.

Poly(aryl piperidinium) polymers including those with stable cationic pendant groups for use as anion exchange membranes and ionomers

Poly(aryl piperidinium) polymers with pendant cationic groups are provided which have an alkaline-stable cation, piperidinium, introduced into a rigid aromatic polymer backbone free of ether bonds. Hydroxide exchange membranes or hydroxide exchange ionomers formed from these polymers exhibit superior chemical stability, hydroxide conductivity, decreased water uptake, good solubility in selected solvents, and improved mechanical properties in an ambient dry state as compared to conventional hydroxide exchange membranes or ionomers. Hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells comprising the poly(aryl piperidinium) polymers with pendant cationic groups exhibit enhanced performance and durability at relatively high temperatures.

Electrocatalyst for water electrolysis

A cathode is provided for electrolysis of water wherein the cathode material comprises a multi-principal element, transition metal dichalcogenide material that has four or more chemical elements and that is a single phase, solid solution. The pristine cathode material does not contain platinum as a principal (major) component. However, a cathode comprising a transition metal dichalcogenide having platinum (Pt) nanosized islands or precipitates disposed thereon is also provided.

Semiconductor suitable for use in photoanode

A composition of matter includes an n-type semiconductor. At least a portion of the semiconductor has the crystal structure of the chemical compound represented by FeWO 4 . The portion of the semiconductor having the crystal structure of FeWO 4 includes iron and tungsten. A photoanode can have a light-absorbing layer that includes or consists of the semiconductor. A solar fuels generator can include the photoanode.

Exascale Multiphysics Nuclear Reactor Simulations for Advanced Designs

ENRICO is a coupled application developed under the U.S. Department of Energy's Exascale Computing Project (ECP) targeting the modeling of advanced nuclear reactors. It couples radiation transport with heat and fluid simulation, including the high-fidelity, highresolution Monte-Carlo code Shift and the Computational fluid dynamics code NekRS. NekRS is a highly-performant open-source code for simulation of incompressible and low-Mach fluid flow, heat transfer, and combustion with a particular focus on turbulent flows in complex domains. It is based on rapidly convergent high-order spectral element discretizations that feature minimal numerical dissipation and dispersion. State-of-the-art multilevel preconditioners, efficient high-order time-splitting methods, and runtime-adaptive communication strategies are built on a fast OCCA-based kernel library, libParanumal, to provide scalability and portability across the spectrum of current and future high-performance computing platforms. On Frontier, Nek5000/RS has recently achieved an unprecedented milestone in breaching over 1 billion spectral elements and 350 billion degrees of freedom. Shift has demonstrated the capability to transport upwards of 1 billion particles per second in full core nuclear reactor simulations featuring complete temperature-dependent, continuous-energy physics on Frontier. Shift achieved a weak-scaling efficiency of 97.8% on 8192 nodes of Frontier and calculated 6 reactions in 214,896 fuel pin regions below 1% statistical error yielding first-of-a-kind resolution for a Monte Carlo transport application.
