JPL's Role in Advancing Earth System Science to Meet the Challenges of Climate and Environmental Change

Objective 2.1.1: Improve understanding of and improve the predictive capability for changes in the ozone layer, climate forcing, and air quality associated with changes in atmospheric composition. Objective 2.1.2: Enable improved predictive capability for weather and extreme weather events. Objective 2.1.3: Quantify, understand, and predict changes in Earth s ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles, including the global carbon cycle, land cover, and biodiversity. Objective 2.1.4: Quantify the key reservoirs and fluxes in the global water cycle and assess water cycle change and water quality. Objective 2.1.5: Improve understanding of the roles of the ocean, atmosphere, land and ice in the climate system and improve predictive capability for its future evolution. Objective 2.1.6: Characterize the dynamics of Earth s surface and interior and form the scientific basis for the assessment and mitigation of natural hazards and response to rare and extreme events. Objective 2.1.7: Enable the broad use of Earth system science observations and results in decision-making activities for societal benefits.

Recent Development of Component Technologies for 2 micrometer LIDAR at JPL

Objective::Global-scale atmospheric measurements of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and other Green House Gases with full diurnal, full latitude, all season coverage capability. Implementation: Use of the laser- based Integrated Path Differential Absorption (IPDA) method at 1.57 and 2.05 microns. Airborne lasers are needed to demonstrate instrument capabilities, risk reduction and satellite measurement validation.

JPL Counterfeit Parts Avoidance

SPACE ARCHITECTURE / ENGINEERING: It brings an extreme test bed for both technologies/concepts as well as procedures/processes. Design and construction (engineering) always go together, especially with complex systems. Requirements (objectives) are crucial. More important than the answers are the questions/Requirements/Tools-Techniques/Processes. Different environments force architects and engineering to think out of the box. For instance there might not be gravity forces. Architectural complex problems have common roots: in Space and on Earth. Let us bring Space down on Earth so we can keep sending Mankind to the stars from a better world. Have fun being architects and engineers...!!! This time is amazing and historical. We are changing the way we inhabit the solar systems!

JPL Advanced Thermal Control Technology Roadmap - 2012

NASA's new emphasis on human exploration program for missions beyond LEO requires development of innovative and revolutionary technologies. Thermal control requirements of future NASA science instruments and missions are very challenging and require advanced thermal control technologies. Limited resources requires organizations to cooperate and collaborate; government, industry, universities all need to work together for the successful development of these technologies.

Fabrication and Design Testing of 4 Petals for Deployable Starshade Prototype : JPL Summer Internship Program : Final Report

One of the next steps in the exoplanet search is the development of occulter technology. Starlight suppression for a telescope would provide the ability to more accurately find and characterize potential true-Earth analogs. Coronagraphs have been the subject of much research in recent years but have yet to prove themselves a feasible approach. Attention has now turned to external occulters or starshades. A large occulting mask in front of a telescope should provide a comparable optical resolution to a coronagraph. Under a TDEM grant, a proposed starshade design was demonstrated to exceed coronagraph resolution by at least an order of magnitude. The current project is to demonstrate that the current design can be manufactured and then properly deployed. 4 sample starshade petals were constructed, ready to be attached to a pre-existing deployment truss. Time was spent detailing and modifying the petal construction process, so that future petals could be constructed at a more accurate and faster pace.
