Mid-infrared (MIR) imaging and spectroscopic observations are presented for a well defined sample of eight closely interacting (CLO) pairs of spiral galaxies that have overlapping disks and show enhanced far-infrared (FIR) emission.

The Galileo Near Infrared Mapping Spectrometer obtains spectral images in the wavelength range 0.7 to 5.2 um with a special resolving power of approximately 200. This spectral range allows NIMS to sense cloud-reflected solar radiation, thermal emission from the deep atmosphere, and auroral bands from the thermosphere of Jupiter.
The nearby spiral galaxy NGC 6946 was observed with ISO-CAM in the mid-infrared, achieving 7inch resolution and sub-MJy sr(sup -1) sensitivity. Images taken with CAM filters LW2 (7(micro)m) and LW3 (15(micro)m) are analyzed to determine the morphology of this galaxy and understand beter the emission mechanisms.
The preparation and characterization of the binary arsenopyrite compounds CoSb2 and IrSb2 and IrxCo1-xSb2 alloys is reported. Single crystals of CoSb2 were grown by the vertical gradient freeze technique from solution rich in antimony. Polycrystalline samples of IrSb2 and IrxCo1-xSb2 alloys were prepared by hot-pressing of prereacted elemental powders. Samples were investigated by X-ray diffractometry, microprobe analysis and density measurements. It was found that a range of solid solution exist in the system IrxCo1-xSb2 for 0.1<x<0.8. Samples were also characterized by high temperature electrical resistivity, Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity measurements. All materials have p-type conductivity and are semiconductors. A band gap of about 0.98 eV was calculated for IrSb2. Preliminary measurements of the thermoelectric properties of these materials showed that their potential for thermoelectric applications is limited.
Large-scale dust heating and cooling in the diffuse medium of M31 is studied using the high resolution (HiRes) IRAS maps in conjunction with UV, optical (UBV), and the HI maps. A dust heating/cooling model is developed based on a radiative transfer model which assumes a 'Sandwich' configuration of dust and stars takes account of the effect of dust grain scattering.
