Simulation of on-orbit modal tests of large space structures

This paper describes a procedure to analytically simulate a modal test of an on-orbit large space structure (LSS), extract the modal properties, and evaluate the success of the modal test. This procedure addresses some of the major challenges to performing an on-orbit modal test of an LSS including high modal density, low frequency modes, and limitations in excitation capabilities. A finite element model of the orbiting structure is used to predict acceleration responses due to thruster excitations, time-domain modal extraction methods are used to estimate the modal properties, and comparison of frequencies and cross-orthogonality values is used to evaluate the success of the modal test. Several alternative excitation patterns and sensor arrangements were evaluated using a space station model as an example. Results of the simulations indicate that the choice of excitation functions is critical to the success of the test.

YBa2Cu3O(7-delta)/Au/Nb sandwich geometry SNS weak links on c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O(7-delta)

Sandwich geometry superconductor/normal metal/superconductor structures have been fabricated on LaAlO3 and cubic zirconia with laser-ablated, c-axis-oriented YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) base electrodes, 100-600 A of Au, and Nb counter electrodes, all formed in situ without breaking vacuum. Junctions range in size from 5 to 50 micron on a side. Four probe I-V measurements at 4.2 K show RnA products as low as 6 x 10 to the -9th sq cm and critical current densities up to 5.2 kA/sq cm. AC Josephson steps were observed with the application of 10-GHz radiation. The temperature dependence of Jc and the observation of the AC Josephson effect suggest that true supercurrents are present and that they do indeed represent the characteristics of the YBa2Cu3O(7-delta)/Au/Nb structure. The best results were obtained when the devices were annealed at about 450 C in O2 for 30 min after Au deposition.

Performance of NbN superconductive tunnel junctions as SIS mixers at 205 GHz

Small area (less than 1 sq micron), high-current-density NbN/MgO/NbN tunnel junctions with I-V characteristics suitable for high-frequency mixers have been fabricated. Mesa-geometry junctions with an area of about 1 sq micron and critical current density of 5-10 kA/sq cm are integrated with superconducting microstrip lines designed to resonate out the junction capacitance. A study was made of the mixer gain and noise performance near 205 GHz as a function of the inductance provided by the microstrip line. This has confirmed, at a high millimeter-wave frequency, values of junction capacitance of 85 fF/sq micron and recently measured values of a magnetic penetration depth of 380 nm. Mixer noise temperatures as low as 134 K at 1.5 K have been obtained for properly tuned junctions. A significant improvement in mixer performance on cooling from 4.2 K to 1.5 K was observed. Edge-geometry junctions with an area of 0.3 sq microns and critical current density of 18-25 kA/sq cm have also been fabricated. These junctions give a mixer noise temperature of 145 K at 4.2 K without the use of integrated tuning elements. These are the best results ever achieved for NbN-based SIS mixers.

Submicron area NbN/MgO/NbN tunnel junctions for SIS mixer applications

The development of submicron area mixer elements for operation in the submillimeter wave range is discussed. High-current-density NbN/MgO/NbN tunnel junctions with areas down to 0.1 sq microns have been fabricated in both planar and edge geometries. The planar junctions were fabricated from in situ deposited trilayers using electron-beam lithography to pattern submicron area mesas. Modifications of fabrication techniques used in larger-area NbN tunnel junctions are required and are discussed. The NbN/MgO/NbN edge junction process using sapphire substrates has been transferred to technologically important quartz substrates using MgO buffer layers to minimize substrate interactions. The two junction geometries are compared and contrasted in the context of submillimeter wave mixer applications.

Report on the formal specification and partial verification of the VIPER microprocessor

The VIPER microprocessor chip is partitioned into four levels of abstractions. At the highest level, VIPER is described with decreasingly abstract sets of functions in LCF-LSM. At the lowest level are the gate-level models in proprietary CAD languages. The block-level and gate-level specifications are also given in the ELLA simulation language. Among VIPER's deficiencies are the fact that there is no notion of external events in the top-level specification, and it is impossible to use the top-level specifications to prove abstract properties of programs running on VIPER computers. There is no complete proof that the gate-level specifications implement the top-level specifications. Cohn's proof that the major-state machine correctly implements the top-level specifications has no formal connection with any of the other proof attempts. None of the latter address resetting the machine, memory timeout, forced error, or single step modes.

High-Tc superconductor coplanar waveguide filter

Coplanar waveguide (CPW) low-pass filters made of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) (YBCO) on LaAlO3 substrates, with dimensions suited for integrated circuits, were fabricated and packaged. A complete filter gives a true idea of the advantages and difficulties in replacing thin-film metal with a high-temperature superconductor in a practical circuit. Measured insertion losses in liquid nitrogen were superior to the loss of a similar thin-film copper filter throughout the 0- to 9.5-GHz passband. These results demonstrate the performance of fully patterned YBCO in a practical CPW structure after sealing in a hermetic package.

All high Tc edge-geometry weak links utilizing Y-Ba-Cu-O barrier layers

High quality YBa2Cu3O(7-x) normal-metal/YBa2Cu3O(7-x) edge-geometry weak links have been fabricated using nonsuperconducting Y-Ba-Cu-O barrier layers deposited by laser ablation at reduced growth temperatures. Devices incorporating 25-100 A thick barrier layers exhibit current-voltage characteristics consistent with the resistively shunted junction model, with strong microwave and magnetic field response at temperatures up to 85 K. The critical currents vary exponentially with barrier thickness, and the resistances scale linearly with Y-Ba-Cu-O interlayer thickness and device area, indicating good barrier uniformity, with an effective mormal metal coherence length of 20 A.

Dynamic Isotope Surface Power Systems

The Dynamic Isotope Power Systems (DIPS) demonstration program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) with support funding from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), is currently focused on the development of a standardized 2.5 kWe portable generator for multiple applications on the lunar or Martian surface. A variety of potential remote and mobile applications has been identified by NASA including surface rovers for both short and extended duration missions, remote power to science packages, and backup to central base power. Recent work focused on refining the 2.5 kWe design including assessing compatibility with the Martian environment to assure the design is suitable while imposing only a minor mass penalty on lunar operations. Additional work included a study performed to compare the DIPS with regenerative fuel cell systems for lunar mobile and remote power systems. Power requirements were reviewed and a modular system chosen for the comparison. Finally, a plan and cycle schematic were generated for an early demonstration of a prototypic isotope power Brayton system using the Antarctic as the test bed.

Design and performance of a high-Tc superconductor coplanar waveguide filter

The design of a coplanar waveguide low-pass filter made of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) (YBCO) on an LaAlO3 substrate is described. Measurements were incorporated into simple models for microwave CAD analysis to develop a final design. The patterned and packaged coplanar waveguide low-pass filter of YBCO, with dimensions suited for integrated circuits, exhibited measured insertion losses when cooled in liquid nitrogen superior to those of a similarly cooled thin-film copper filter throughout the 0 to 9.5 GHz passband. Coplanar waveguide models for use with thin-film normal metal (with thickness either greater or less than the skin depth) and YBCO are discussed and used to compare the losses of the measured YBCO and copper circuits.

SNS Device Made With Edge-Defined Geometry

YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta)/Au/Nb superconductor/normal-conductor/superconductor (SNS) microbridge devices fabricated using now-standard lithographic techniques and edge geometry to define normally conducting links having submicron-by-several-microns cross-sectional dimensions. Edge geometry allows current to flow only in these planes and takes advantage of longer coherence length at critical YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta)/Au/Nb interface. Sensitivity to damage on edge of YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-delta)/Au/Nb reduced.

SNS Heterojunctions With New Combinations Of Materials

New combinations of materials proposed for superconductor/normal-metal/superconductor (SNS) heterojunctions in low-temperature electronic devices such as fast switches, magnetometers, and mixers. Epitaxial heterojunctions formed between high-temperature superconductors and either oxide semiconductors or metals. Concept offers alternative to other three-layer heterojunction concepts; physical principles of operation permit SNS devices to have thicker barrier layers and fabricated more easily.

An edge defined geometry is used to produce very small area tunnel junctions in a structure with niobium nitride superconducting electrodes and a magnesium oxide tunnel barrier. The incorporation of an MgO tunnel barrier with two NbN electrodes results in improved current-voltage characteristics, and may lead to better junction noise characteristics. The NbN electrodes are preferably sputter-deposited, with the first NbN electrode deposited on an insulating substrate maintained at about 250 C to 500 C for improved quality of the electrode.

Computational method to predict thermodynamic, transport, and flow properties for the modified Langley 8-foot high-temperature tunnel

The Langley 8 foot high temperature tunnel (8 ft HTT) is used to test components of hypersonic vehicles for aerothermal loads definition and structural component verification. The test medium of the 8 ft HTT is obtained by burning a mixture of methane and air under high pressure; the combustion products are expanded through an axisymmetric conical contoured nozzle to simulate atmospheric flight at Mach 7. This facility was modified to raise the oxygen content of the test medium to match that of air and to include Mach 4 and Mach 5 capabilities. These modifications will facilitate the testing of hypersonic air breathing propulsion systems for a wide range of flight conditions. A computational method to predict the thermodynamic, transport, and flow properties of the equilibrium chemically reacting oxygen enriched methane-air combustion products was implemented in a computer code. This code calculates the fuel, air, and oxygen mass flow rates and test section flow properties for Mach 7, 5, and 4 nozzle configurations for given combustor and mixer conditions. Salient features of the 8 ft HTT are described, and some of the predicted tunnel operational characteristics are presented in the carpet plots to assist users in preparing test plans.

Interacting and self-organized two-level states in tunnel barriers

The excess low-frequency 1/f noise and discrete two-level resistance fluctuations (TLFs) were studied in small-area NbN-MgO-NbN tunnel junctions with a high, low-temperature density of active defects. Strong and evolving interactions between large TLFs indicate that these fluctuations result from the self-organization of interacting defect elements. In the low-T tunneling regime, an unusual slowing down of the rates and a decrease in amplitude with increasing T is sometimes observed indicative of a thermally induced change in the self-organized two-level state.

Chemical nature of the barrier in Pb/YBa2Cu3O(7-x) tunneling structures

Several reports of reproducible tunneling measurements on YBa2Cu3O(7-x) thin films or single crystals with a Pb counterelectrode have recently appeared. The nature of the tunnel barrier, formed by air exposure, in these structures has been unknown. In the present work, the chemical nature of the tunnel barrier is studied with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Laser-ablated films grown on LaAlO3 which have been chemically etched and heated in air are found to form nonsuperconducting surface Ba species, evident in an increase of the high binding energy Ba 3d and O 1s signals. A deposited Pb film about 10 A thick is found to be oxidized, and Cu(+2) is partially reduced to Cu(+1). The tunneling barrier thus appears to consist of species resulting from a combination of the air exposure and a reaction between the superconductor and the deposited Pb counterelectrode.
