Spectroscopy of A=9 hyperlithium with the $(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})$ reaction

Missing mass spectroscopy with the $(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})$ reaction was performed at JLab Hall C for the neutron rich $\Lambda$ hypernucleus $^{9}_{\Lambda}{\rm Li}$. The ground state energy was obtained to be $B_{\Lambda}^{\rm g.s.}=8.84\pm0.17^{\rm stat.}\pm0.15^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$ by using shell model calculations of a cross section ratio and an energy separation of the spin doublet states ($3/2^{+}_1$ and $5/2^{+}_1$). In addition, peaks that are considered to be states of [$^{8}{\rm Li}(3^{+})\otimes s_{\Lambda}=3/2^{+}_{2}, 1/2^{+}$] and [$^{8}{\rm Li}(1^{+})\otimes s_{\Lambda}=5/2^{+}_{2}, 7/2^{+}$] were observed at $E_{\Lambda}(\#2)=1.74\pm0.27^{\rm stat.}\pm0.11^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$ and $E_{\Lambda}(\#3)=3.30\pm0.24^{\rm stat.}\pm0.11^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$, respectively. The $E_{\Lambda}(\#3)$ is larger than shell model predictions by a few hundred keV, and the difference would indicate that a ${\rm ^{5}He}+t$ structure is more developed for the $3^{+}$ state than those for the $2^{+}$ and $1^{+}$ states in a core nucleus $^{8}{\rm Li}$ as a cluster model calculation suggests.

Comparison of heavy-ion transport simulations: Mean-field dynamics in a box

Within the transport model evaluation project (TMEP) of simulations for heavy-ion collisions, the mean-field response is examined here. Specifically, zero-sound propagation is considered for neutron-proton symmetric matter enclosed in a periodic box, at zero temperature and around normal density. The results of several transport codes belonging to two families (BUU-like and QMD-like) are compared among each other and to exact calculations. For BUU-like codes, employing the test particle method, the results depend on the combination of the number of test particles and the spread of the profile functions that weight integration over space. These parameters can be properly adapted to give a good reproduction of the analytical zero-sound features. QMD-like codes, using molecular dynamics methods, are characterized by large damping effects, attributable to the fluctuations inherent in their phase-space representation. Moreover, for a given nuclear effective interaction, they generally lead to slower density oscillations, as compared to BUU-like codes. The latter problem is mitigated in the more recent lattice formulation of some of the QMD codes. Furthermore, the significance of these results for the description of real heavy-ion collisions is discussed.

Measurement of spin density matrix elements in Λ ( 1520 ) photoproduction at 8.2–8.8 GeV

We report on the measurement of spin density matrix elements of the $\Lambda(1520)$ in the photoproduction reaction $\gamma p\rightarrow \Lambda(1520)K^+$, via its subsequent decay to $K^{-}p$. The measurement was performed as part of the GlueX experimental program in Hall D at Jefferson Lab using a linearly polarized photon beam with $E_\gamma =$ 8.2-8.8 GeV. These are the first such measurements in this photon energy range. Results are presented in bins of momentum transfer squared, $-(t-t_\text{0})$. We compare the results with a Reggeon exchange model and determine that natural exchange amplitudes are dominant in $\Lambda(1520)$ photoproduction.

Measurement of R = σ L / σ T and the separated longitudinal and transverse structure functions in the nucleon-resonance region

Here we report on a detailed study of longitudinal strength in the nucleon resonance region, presenting new results from inclusive electron-proton cross sections measured at Jefferson Lab Hall C in the four-momentum transfer range 0.2 < Q 2 < 5.5 GeV 2 . The data have been used to accurately perform over 170 Rosenbluth-type longitudinal/transverse separations. The precision R = $\sigma_{L} /\sigma _{T}$ data are presented here, along with the first separate values of the inelastic structure functions F 1 and F L in this regime. The resonance longitudinal component is found to be significant. With the new data, quark-hadron duality is observed above Q 2 = 1 GeV 2 in the separated structure functions independently.

Investigation of 48 Ca-induced reactions with 242 Pu and 238 U targets at the JINR Superheavy Element Factory

Experiments using a 48 Ca beam on 238 U and 242 Pu targets to produce superheavy nuclei were performed at the gas-filled separator DGFRS-2 online to the new cyclotron DC280 at the SHE Factory at JINR. The decay properties of 286 Fl and 287 Fl, as well as their α-decay products, were refined after the detection of 25 and 69 new decay chains, respectively. In addition, 16 decay chains of 283 Cn were observed in the 238 U+ 48 Ca reaction. The possibility of existing of isomeric states in the 287 Fl consecutive α decays is discussed. A new α line with an energy of 100–200 keV lower than the main one at 10.19 MeV was observed for the first time for even-even 286 Fl decay. A maximum cross section of $10.4^{+3.5}_{-2.1}$pb was measured for the 242 Pu( 48 Ca,3n) 287 Fl reaction.

New isotope 286 Mc produced in the 243 Am + 48 Ca reaction

In this paper, we present results of the second experiment on the synthesis of Mc isotopes in the 243 Am + 48 Ca reaction performed at the gas-filled separator DGFRS-2 of the SHE Factory at JINR. Here, the new isotope 286 Mc was synthesized, and its half-life of $20^{+98}_{–9}$ ms and α-particle energy of 10.71 ± 0.02 MeV were determined. A 286 Mc α–decay chain was recorded down to the spontaneous fission of 266 Db. The spontaneous fission of 279 Rg was observed for the first time in one of four new decay chains of 287 Mc. The excitation function of the reaction was measured at three 48 Ca energies of 242, 250, and 259 MeV; the latter resulted in the first observation of the 5$\textit{n}$–evaporation channel with a cross section of $0.5^{+1.3}_{–0.4}$ pb. The decay properties of 21 previously known odd–$\textit{Z}$ isotopes were improved. The potential for an electron-capture decay mode is discussed for 288 Mc and 284 Nh isotopes. The half-lives of spontaneously fissioning nuclei produced in the 48 Ca–induced reactions with actinide targets are compared with several theoretical predictions.

First experiment at the Super Heavy Element Factory: High cross section of Mc 288 in the Am 243 + Ca 48 reaction and identification of the new isotope Lr 264

Here, we present results of the first experiment aimed at the synthesis of Mc isotopes in the 243 Am+ 48 Ca reaction performed at the new gas-filled separator DGFRS-2 online to the new cyclotron DC280 at the Super Heavy Element Factory at JINR. Fifty-five new decay chains of 288 Mc and six chains assigned to 289 Mc were detected. The α decay of 268 Db with an energy of 7.6–8.0 MeV, half-life of 16$^{+6}_{-4}$h, and a branch of 55$^{+20}_{-15}$% was registered for the first time, and a new spontaneously fissioning isotope 264 Lr with a half-life of 4.9$^{+2.1}_{-1.3}$h was identified. The cross section for the 243 Am( 48 Ca,3n) 288 Mc reaction was measured to be 17.1$^{+6.3}_{-4.7}$ pb, which is the largest value for the known superheavy nuclei at the island of stability.

Measurement of the J/ψ photoproduction cross section over the full near-threshold kinematic region

Here, we report the total and differential cross sections for $J/\psi$ photoproduction with the large acceptance GlueX spectrometer for photon beam energies from the threshold at 8.2 GeV up to 11.44 GeV and over the full kinematic range of momentum transfer squared, $t$. Such coverage facilitates the extrapolation of the differential cross sections to the forward ($t = 0$) point beyond the physical region. The forward cross section is used by many theoretical models and plays an important role in understanding $J/\psi$ photoproduction and its relation to the $J/\psi$-proton interaction. These measurements of $J/\psi$ photoproduction near threshold are also crucial inputs to theoretical models that are used to study important aspects of the gluon structure of the proton, such as the gluon Generalized Parton Distribution (GPD) of the proton, the mass radius of the proton, and the trace anomaly contribution to the proton mass. We observe possible structures in the total cross section energy dependence and find evidence for contributions beyond gluon exchange in the differential cross section close to threshold, both of which are consistent with contributions from open-charm intermediate states.

Measurement of spin-density matrix elements in ρ ( 770 ) production with a linearly polarized photon beam at E γ = 8.2 – 8.8 GeV

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab studies photoproduction of mesons using linearly polarized 8.5GeV photons impinging on a hydrogen target which is contained within a detector with near-complete coverage for charged and neutral particles. We present measurements of spin-density matrix elements for the photoproduction of the vector meson rho(770). The statistical precision achieved exceeds that of previous experiments for polarized photoproduction in this energy range by orders of magnitude. Here we confirm a high degree of s-channel helicity conservation at small squared four-momentum transfer t and are able to extract the t-dependence of natural and unnatural-parity exchange contributions to the production process in detail. We confirm the dominance of natural-parity exchange over the full t range. We also find that helicity amplitudes in which the helicity of the incident photon and the photoproduced rho(770) differ by two units are negligible for -t<0.5GeV 2 /c 2 .

Comparing pion production in transport simulations of heavy-ion collisions at 270⁢𝐴 MeV under controlled conditions

Within the TMEP, we present a detailed study of the performance of different transport models in Sn+Sn collisions at 270A MeV, and put particular emphasis on the production of pions and Delta resonances, which have been used as probes of the nuclear symmetry energy. We prescribe a common and rather simple physics model, and follow in detail the results of 4 BUU models and 6 QMD models. The nucleonic evolution of the collision and the nucleonic observables in these codes do not completely converge, but the differences among the codes can be understood as being due to several reasons: the basic differences between BUU and QMD models in the representation of the phase-space distributions, computational differences in the mean-field evaluation, and differences in the adopted strategies for the Pauli blocking in the collision integrals. For pionic observables, we find that a higher maximum density leads to an enhanced pion yield and a reduced pi- pi+ yield ratio, while a more effective Pauli blocking generally leads to a slightly suppressed pion yield and an enhanced pi- pi+ yield ratio. We specifically investigate the effect of the Coulomb force, and find that it increases the total pi- pi+ yield ratio but reduces the ratio at high pion energies, although differences in its implementations do not have a dominating role in the differences among the codes. Taking into account only the results of codes that strictly follow the homework specifications, we find a convergence of the codes in the final charged pion yield ratio to a 1 sigma deviation of about 5%. Furthermore, the uncertainty is expected to be reduced to about 1.6% if the same or similar strategies and ingredients, i.e., an improved Pauli blocking and calculation of the non-linear term in the mean-field potential, are similarly used in all codes.

Detecting axion dark matter with black hole polarimetry

The axion, as a leading dark matter candidate, is the target of many ongoing and proposed experimental searches based on its coupling to photons. Ultralight axions that couple to photons can also cause polarization rotation of light which can be probed by the cosmic microwave background. In this work, we show that a large axion field is inevitably developed around black holes due to the Bose-Einstein condensation of axions, enhancing the induced birefringence effects. Therefore, measuring the modulation of supermassive black hole imaging polarization angles is a strong probe to the axion-photon coupling due to the formation of the axion condensation (axion star) which enhances the axion field. The oscillating axion field around black holes induces polarization rotation on the black hole image, which is detectable and distinguishable from astrophysical effects on the polarization angle, as it exhibits distinctive temporal variability and frequency invariability. In this work, we perform the theoretical calculation on the axion star formation rate and correspondingly the enhanced axion field value near supermassive black holes. Then, we present the range of axion-photon couplings within the axion mass range 10 − 21 – 10 − 16 eV that can be probed by the Event Horizon Telescope. The axion parameter space probed by black hole polarimetry will expand with the improvement in sensitivity on the polarization measurement and more black hole polarimetry targets with determined black hole masses. Signatures of Multiband Effects in High-Harmonic Generation in Monolayer MoS 2

High-harmonic generation (HHG) in solids has been touted as a way to probe ultrafast dynamics and crystal symmetries in condensed matter systems. Here, we investigate the polarization properties of high-order harmonics generated in monolayer MoS 2 , as a function of crystal orientation relative to the mid-infrared laser field polarization. At several different laser wavelengths we experimentally observe a prominent angular shift of the parallel-polarized odd harmonics for energies above approximately 3.5 eV, and our calculations indicate that this shift originates in subtle differences in the recombination dipole strengths involving multiple conduction bands. Further, this observation is material specific and is in addition to the angular dependence imposed by the dynamical symmetry properties of the crystal interacting with the laser field, and may pave the way for probing the vectorial character of multiband recombination dipoles.

Upper Limit on the Photoproduction Cross Section of the Spin-Exotic $π$ 1 (1600)

Here, the spin-exotic hybrid meson π 1 (1600) is predicted to have a large decay rate to the ωππ final state. Using 76.6 pb -1 of data collected with the GlueX detector, we measure the cross sections for the reactions γp → ωπ + π - p, γp → ωπ 0 π 0 p, and γp → ωπ - π 0 Δ ++ in the range E γ = 8 - 10 GeV. Using isospin conservation, we set the first upper limits on the photoproduction cross sections of the π$^0_1$(1600) and $π^-_1$(1600). We combine these limits with lattice calculations of decay widths and find that photoproduction of η' π is the most sensitive two-body system to search for the π 1 (1600).

First Measurement of Near-Threshold and Subthreshold 𝐽/𝜓 Photoproduction off Nuclei

We report on the first measurement of J/ψ photoproduction from nuclei in the photon energy range of 7 to 10.8 GeV, extending above and below the photoproduction threshold in the free proton of ∼ 8.2 GeV. The experiment used a tagged photon beam incident on deuterium, helium, and carbon, and the GlueX detector at Jefferson Lab to measure the semi-inclusive A(γ, e + e − p) reaction with a dilepton invariant mass M(e + e − ) ∼ m J/ψ = 3.1 GeV. The incoherent J/ψ photoproduction cross sections in the measured nuclei are extracted as a function of the incident photon energy, momentum transfer, and proton reconstructed missing light-cone momentum fraction. Comparisons with theoretical predictions assuming a dipole form factor allow extracting a gluonic radius for bound protons of p $\sqrt4⟨r^2⟩$ = 0.85 ± 0.14 fm. The data also suggest an excess of the measured cross section for sub-threshold production and for interactions with high missing light-cone momentum fraction protons. The measured enhancement can be explained by modified gluon structure for high-virtuality bound-protons.

Barriers to carrier transport in multiple quantum well nitride-based c -plane green light emitting diodes

The presence of alloy disorder in III-nitride materials has been demonstrated to play a significant role in device performance through effects such as carrier localization and carrier transport. Relative to blue light emitting diodes (LEDs), these effects become more severe at green wavelengths. Because of the potential fluctuations that arise due to alloy disorder, full three-dimensional (3D) simulations are necessary to accurately relate materials properties to device performance. We demonstrate experimentally and through simulation that increased quantum well (QW) number in c-plane green LEDs contributes to excess driving voltage, and therefore reduced electrical efficiency. Experimentally, we grew an LED series with the number of QWs varying from one to seven and observed a systematic increase in voltage with the addition of each QW. Trends in LED electrical properties obtained from 3D simulations, which account for the effects of random alloy fluctuations, are in agreement with experimental data. Agreement is achieved without the need for adjusting polarization parameters from their known values. Finally, from these results, we propose that the polarization induced barriers at the GaN/InGaN (lower barrier/QW) interfaces and the sequential filling of QWs both contribute significantly to the excess forward voltage in multiple QW c-plane green LEDs.
