Unscreened forces in the quark-gluon plasma?

We study the correlator of temporal Wilson lines at nonzero temperature in 2+1 flavor lattice QCD with the aim to define the heavy quark-antiquark potential at nonzero temperature. For temperatures 153 MeV ≤ 𝑇 ≤ 352 MeV the spectral representation of this correlator is consistent with a broadened peak in the spectral function, position, or width of which then defines the real or imaginary parts of the heavy quark-antiquark potential at nonzero temperature, respectively. We find that the potential’s real part is not screened contrary to the widely held expectations. We comment on how this fact may modify the picture of quarkonium melting in the quark-gluon plasma.

Suppression of Deflecting Forces in Planar-Symmetric Dielectric Wakefield Accelerating Structures with Elliptical Bunches

Wakefield based accelerators capable of accelerating gradients two orders of magnitude higher than present accelerators offer a path to compact high energy physics instruments and light sources. However, for high gradient accelerators, beam instabilities driven by commensurately high transverse wakefields limit beam quality. It has been previously theoretically shown that transverse wakefields can be reduced by elliptically shaping the transverse sizes of beams in dielectric structures with planar symmetry. We report here experimental measurements that demonstrate reduced transverse wakefields for elliptical beams in planar symmetric structures which are consistent with theoretical models. Furthermore, these results may enable the design of gigavolt-per-meter gradient wakefield based accelerators that produce and stably accelerate high quality beams.

Elastic Antiproton-Nucleus Scattering from Chiral Forces

Elastic scattering of antiprotons off He 4 , C 12 , and O 16 , 18 is described for the first time with a consistent microscopic approach based on the calculation of an optical potential (OP) describing the antiproton-target interaction. The OP is derived using the recent antiproton-nucleon ( p ¯ N ) chiral interaction to calculate the p ¯ N t matrix, while the target densities are computed with the ab initio no-core shell model using chiral interactions as well. Here, our results are in good agreement with the existing experimental data and the results computed at different chiral orders of the p ¯ N interaction display a well-defined convergence pattern.

Universal van der Waals Force between Heavy Polarons in Superfluids

Here, we investigate the long-range behavior of the induced Casimir interaction between two spinless heavy impurities, or polarons, in superfluid cold atomic gases. With the help of effective field theory (EFT) of a Galilean invariant superfluid, we show that the induced impurity-impurity potential at long distance universally shows a relativistic van der Waals-like attraction (~1/r 7 ) resulting from the exchange of two superfluid phonons. We also clarify finite temperature effects from the same two-phonon exchange process. The temperature $\mathrm{T}$ introduces the additional length scale c s /$\mathrm{T}$ with the speed of sound c s . Leading corrections at finite temperature scale as $\mathrm{T}$ 6 /r for distances r$\ll$c s /$\mathrm{T}$ smaller than the thermal length. For larger distances the potential shows a nonrelativistic van der Waals behavior (~$\mathrm{T}$/r 6 ) instead of the relativistic one. Our EFT formulation applies not only to weakly coupled Bose or Fermi superfluids but also to those composed of strongly correlated unitary fermions with a weakly coupled impurity. The sound velocity controls the magnitude of the van der Waals potential, which we evaluate for the fermionic superfluid in the BCS-BEC crossover.

On the Quantum Mechanics of Entropic Forces

It was conjectured 30 years ago that gravity could arise from the entropic rearrangement of information. We offer a set of microscopic quantum models which realize this idea in detail. In particular, we suggest a simple mechanism by which Newton’s law of gravity arises from extremization of the free energy of a collection of qubits or oscillators, rather than from the exchange of virtual quanta of a fundamental field. We give both a local and a nonlocal version of the construction and show how to distinguish a range of these entropic models from ordinary perturbative quantum gravity using existing observations and near-term experiments.

Validated ligand geometries for macromolecular refinement restraints and molecular-mechanics force fields

In macromolecular structure refinement, the low observation-to-parameter ratio and the lack of high-resolution data are countered by using a priori information in the form of restraints. Having accurate geometries of the chemical entities in the sample is paramount for generating accurate chemical restraints and, therefore, accurate macromolecular structures. In particular, it is desirable to have accurate restraints for known and novel ligand entities. Quantum mechanics (QM) can minimize the energy of a ligand by adjusting its geometry, and these geometries can be used to generate restraints for macromolecular refinement. This article describes a library of approximately 37 000 small molecules extracted from the Chemical Component Dictionary in the Protein Data Bank and minimized by density-functional QM. The library includes restraint files for use in crystallography or cryo-EM refinement, along with files suitable for molecular-dynamics simulation. Because the geometries are validated using the Cambridge Structural Database, the restraints library provides users with both functional restraints and minimized geometries. This work also provides procedures for generating new and accurate restraints.
