Charged Pion Production Explorations Using the NOvA Near Detector

Measurements of neutrino-nucleus interactions in the few-GeV region provide crucial inputs to the neutrino oscillation program being carried out by currently running experiments (NOvA, SBN, T2K), and next-generation experiments (DUNE, 2HK). This poster presents the status of a measurement using the high-intensity NuMI beam and the NOvA Near Detector of the flux-integrated differential cross-section in pion kinetic energy for $\nu_\mu + N \rightarrow \mu^- + \pi^\pm + X$, where X does not include any charged pions. This signal is sensitive to inelastic processes with Delta resonance production, which dominate at neutrino energies relevant for NOvA and DUNE. To overcome the difficulty of reconstructing the energy of charged pions in a lower-spatial-resolution detector, a novel analysis technique is used that incorporates a multi-template fit to extract the number of events for two signal categories that differ from one another by their purity and resolution. The two signal categories are combined leveraging their complementary errors into a more informative cross section result.

Tritium Betavoltaic Powered Sensor Platforms: Power Augmentation with Scintillating Particles

Betavoltaics (BV) are long-life power sources that typically convert beta particle radiation into electricity. Largely, the radioactive decays within the source go unharvested by the device. This work seeks to augment the power generation of BV devices by integration of scintillating particles within the radiative getter to convert beta emission which would otherwise not leave the getter into usable light for power generation. Silica-covered barium fluoride scintillating particles were integrated into a tritiated water getter. Power generation was increased from 100s of nW to µW levels with the addition of 0.2 wt. % particles into the getter. Nanowatt-scale sensor platforms were demonstrated with the µW BV devices and the maximum possible lifetime of such platforms was estimated. As this technique enables higher power density BV devices from conventional Si semiconductors (compared to wider bandgap BVs), the further implementation may lower the barrier-to-deployment of these long-life power/sensor platforms.

Pre-Equilibrium De-Excitations in Neutrino-Nucleus Interactions

Pre-equilibrium de-excitation is a well-established stage of nucleon-induced nuclear reactions but has not previously been incorporated into neutrino event generators. This work implements the Koning-Duijvestijn exciton model within the MARLEY neutrino event generator to simulate energy redistribution and particle emission before compound nucleus equilibrium. The implementation includes modular calculations of particle-hole state densities, internal transition rates, emission rates, and Monte Carlo cascade sampling, and is validated against the TALYS-2.2 nuclear reaction code. A new event record is also proposed to enable future uncertainty reweighting studies. This work establishes the first framework for studying pre-equilibrium effects in neutrino-induced reactions, with the goal of improving predictions of particle multiplicities, γ-ray production, and MeV-scale detector signals relevant to experiments such as DUNE.
