Eigenvalue similarity rules for symmetric cross-ply laminated plates

Symmetric cross-ply laminated plates are analyzed by employing a previously presented affine stretching process, some material constant definitions from Tsai (1964), and by gneralizing existing similarity rules. As examples, similarity rules are employed to find the frequency spectrum of a cross-ply symmetric plate from the corresponding isotropic solution, and a similarity solution is presented for the vibration of an axially loaded, simply supported cross-ply symmetric plate. Buckling similarity rules are also presented.

Large-scale waves in the thermosphere observed by the AE-C satellite

Wavelike perturbations in the ionosphere are known as traveling ionospheric disturbances (TID's). For the detection of wavelike perturbations in neutral density, velocity, and temperature, it is necessary to employ satellite-borne experiments. Experiments conducted with the aid of satellites so far provide little evidence that wavelike perturbations in the neutrals and the ions are correlated. The present investigation is concerned with a detailed examination of the wavelike perturbations observed during a representative Atmosphere Explorer C satellite orbit. Details regarding the analyzed data are discussed along with the employed data processing procedures. Attention is given to coherent relationships between the ion variations and the neutral variations over a wide range of scale sizes and over global distances.

The performance of differential VLBI delay during interplanetary cruise

Project Voyager radio metric data are used to evaluate the orbit determination abilities of several data strategies during spacecraft interplanetary cruise. Benchmark performance is established with an operational data strategy of conventional coherent doppler, coherent range, and explicitly differenced range data from two intercontinental baselines to ameliorate the low declination singularity of the doppler data. Employing a Voyager operations trajectory as a reference, the performance of the operational data strategy is compared to the performances of data strategies using differential VLBI delay data (spacecraft delay minus quasar delay) in combinations with the aforementioned conventional data types. The comparison of strategy performances indicates that high accuracy cruise orbit determination can be achieved with a data strategy employing differential VLBI delay data, where the quantity of coherent radio metric data has been greatly reduced.

Radiometric analyses of Landsat-4 digital image data

The results of analyses of the radiometric characteristics of digital image data produced by the Landsat 4 MSS and TM sensors are reviewed. The MSS analysis found high quality data comparable to the products of previous Landsats, except for a low-level coherent noise effect having a magnitude of about 0.5 counts in each band and a spatial period of about 3.6 pixels. The TM analysis found excellent spatial resolution, generally high data quality and expected scan-angle effects. Procedures for equalizing detector responses appear to be working as intended. Two low-amplitude artifacts also were discovered. The first is associated with the direction of scan (TM employs bidirectional scanning). The second, a very low employs bidirectional scanning). The second, a very low frequency level-shift artifact which produces image banding that is most pronounced in TM1, could be a serious problem for water-related applications or others where average signal levels are low. Correction procedures are under investigation.

Blind-Side, High-Temperature Fastener Lock

Formed-in-place staple provides positive mechanical lock. Post-supported, advanced carbon/carbon standoff panels, currently under consideration as alternate thermal protection system for Shuttle orbiter, locking feature applicable to temperatures of 1,600 degrees F (870 degrees C) and higher and employable after panel installed, resulting in blind application. Blind-side locking technique employs wire staple inserted into grooves in post, formed in place by ramped portion of post grooves. This splays out wire ends that move into castellated end of grommet, mechanically locking post and grommet against relative rotation. Splayed ends provide mechanical lock to prevent wire from falling out.

The comparison of strategy performances indicates that high accuracy cruise orbit determination can be achieved with a data strategy employing differential VLBI delay data, where the quantity of coherent radio metric data was reduced by over 95% with a concurrent 90% reduction in the DSN time allocated to radio metric data acquisition.

Maximum Normalized Rate as a Flying Qualities Parameter

Discrete attitude commands have become a standard task for flying qualities evaluation and control system testing. Much pilot opinion data is now available for ground-based and in-flight simulations, but adequate performance measures and prediction methods have not been established. The Step Target Tracking Prediction method, introduced in 1978, correlated time-on-target and rms tracking data with NT-33 in-flight longitudinal simulations, but did not employ parameters easily measured in manned flight and simulation. Recent application of the Step Target Tracking Prediction method to lateral flying qualities analysis has led to a new measure of performance. This quantity, called Maximum Normalized Rate (MNR), reflects the greatest attitude rate a pilot can employ during a discrete maneuver without excessive overshoot and oscillation. MNR correlates NT-33 lateral pilot opinion ratings well, and is easily measured during flight test or simulation. Futhermore, the Step Target MNR method can be used to analyze large amplitude problems concerning rate limiting and nonlinear aerodynamics.

The Representation of Action Plans in Long Term Memory

A sequence of experiments conducted on a two hand chord typewriter, to compare the efficiency of different coding principles employed to associate letters with their chord productions is described. This keyboard represents an effort to identify effective alternatives to the existing typewriter. It consists of two seperate 5-key panels (one for each hand), and letters are entered by typing chords composed of one to five fingers. Each panel is capable of producing the full alphabet. One group of experiments was designed to separate between perceptual and motor factors in the acivation of single letter chords. The results underline the importance of perceptual factors in the activation of motor plans. The complexity of the patterns employed to represent letters was shown to account for 50 percent of variance in the typing speeds of single letters. The theoretical implications of these results are discussed in relation to a vision based theory of action plans.

On the Solution of the Three-Dimensional Flowfield About a Flow-Through Nacelle

The solution of the three dimensional flow field for a flow through nacelle was studied. Both inviscid and viscous inviscid interacting solutions were examined. Inviscid solutions were obtained with two different computational procedures for solving the three dimensional Euler equations. The first procedure employs an alternating direction implicit numerical algorithm, and required the development of a complete computational model for the nacelle problem. The second computational technique employs a fourth order Runge-Kutta numerical algorithm which was modified to fit the nacelle problem. Viscous effects on the flow field were evaluated with a viscous inviscid interacting computational model. This model was constructed by coupling the explicit Euler solution procedure with a flag entrainment boundary layer solution procedure in a global iteration scheme. The computational techniques were used to compute the flow field for a long duct turbofan engine nacelle at free stream Mach numbers of 0.80 and 0.94 and angles of attack of 0 and 4 deg.

Thermal traction contact performance evaluation under fully flooded and starved conditions

Ultra high speed traction tests were performed on two traction fluids commonly employed. Traction data on these fluids is required for purposes of traction drive design optimization techniques. To obtain the traction data, an existing twin disc traction test machine was employed. This machine was modified to accommodate the range of test variables. All the data reported was obtained under conditions of side slip, a technique whereby only low power levels are required to simulate real traction drive contacts. Theoretical traction predictions were performed for a representative number of curves that showed the influence of rolling velocity, of contact pressure and of aspect ratio. To establish the accuracy of the thermal model the predictions were performed ith increasing levels of independence of experimentally determined parameters. In the final resulting prediction only two non linear thermal parameters were used for the prediction of 15 different traction curves covering the entire range of variables as used in the investigation, with the exception of the influence of asperity traction. Comparison of these theoretical curves and corresponding experimental traces show very good agreement.

Predictions of cardiovascular responses during STS reentry using mathematical models

The physiological adaptation to weightless exposure includes cardiovascular deconditioning arising in part from a loss of total circulating blood volume and resulting in a reduction of orthostatic tolerance. The crew of the Shuttle orbiter are less tolerant to acceleration forces in the head-to-foot direction during the reentry phase of the flight at a time they must function at a high level of performance. The factors that contribute to orthostatic intolerance during and following reentry and to predict the likelihood of impaired crew performance are evaluated. A computer simulation approach employing a mathematical model of the cardiovascular system is employed. It is shown that depending on the severity of blood volume loss, the reentry acceleration stress may be detrimental to physiologic function and may place the physiologic status of the crew near the borderline of some type of impairment. They are in agreement with conclusions from early ground-based experiments and from observations of early Shuttle flights.

Development of a Persistent Chemical Agent Simulator System (PCASS)

The development of a persistent chemical agent simulation system (PCASS) is described. This PCASS is to be used for the military training of troops to simulate actual chemical warfare. The purpose of this system is to facilitate in the determination of chemical contamination and effectiveness of decontamination for training purposes. The fluorescent tracer employed has no daylight activation, but yet is easily removed with a decontaminate solution or water and surfactants. Also employed is a time delayed color developing system. When an individual is subjected to the PCASS and does not decontaminate adequately, red blotches or red coloration will develop as a function of time and temperature. The intent of this is to simulate the delayed chemical reaction of mustard contaminates.

Development and evaluation of a fault-tolerant multiprocessor (FTMP) computer. Volume 1: FTMP principles of operation

The basic organization of the fault tolerant multiprocessor, (FTMP) is that of a general purpose homogeneous multiprocessor. Three processors operate on a shared system (memory and I/O) bus. Replication and tight synchronization of all elements and hardware voting is employed to detect and correct any single fault. Reconfiguration is then employed to repair a fault. Multiple faults may be tolerated as a sequence of single faults with repair between fault occurrences.

Ergonomic problems regarding the interactive touch input via screens in onboard and ground-based flight control

A significant problem concerning the integration of display and switching functions is related to the fact that numerous informative data which have to be processed by man must be read from only a few display devices. A satisfactory ergonomic design of integrated display devices and keyboards is in many cases difficult, because not all functions which can be displayed and selected are simultaneously available. A technical solution which provides an integration of display and functional elements on the basis of the highest flexibility is obtained by using a cathode ray tube with a touch-sensitive screen. The employment of an integrated data input/output system is demonstrated for the cases of onboard and ground-based flight control. Ergonomic studies conducted to investigate the suitability of an employment of touch-sensitive screens are also discussed.

Production of butanol by fermentation in the presence of cocultures of clostridium

Sugars are converted to a mixture of solvents including butanol by a fermentation process employing a coculture of microorganisms of the Clostridium genus, one of said microorganisms favoring the production of butyric acid and the other of which converts the butyric acid so produced to butanol. The use of a coculture substantially increases the yield of butanol over that obtained using a culture employing only one microorganism.

Thermal detectors as single photon X-ray spectrometers

In a thermal detector employed for X-ray spectroscopy applications, the energy of an X-ray is converted to heat in a small mass, and the energy of that X-ray inferred from the size of the temperature rise. The present investigation is concerned with the possibility to make an extremely low heat capacity calorimeter which can be employed as a thermal detector. Several types of calorimeters were fabricated and tested at temperatures as low as approximately 0.05 K. The obtained devices make use of thermistors constructed of melt-doped silicon, nuclear transmutation doped (NTD) germanium, and ion-implanted silicon with a variety of materials for the support and electrical leads. The utility of these microcalorimeters as X-ray spectrometers could be verified.

Writing executable assertions to test flight software

An executable assertion is a logical statement about the variables or a block of code. If there is no error during execution, the assertion statement results in a true value. Executable assertions can be used for dynamic testing of software. They can be employed for validation during the design phase, and exception and error detection during the operation phase. The present investigation is concerned with the problem of writing executable assertions, taking into account the use of assertions for testing flight software. They can be employed for validation during the design phase, and for exception handling and error detection during the operation phase The digital flight control system and the flight control software are discussed. The considered system provides autopilot and flight director modes of operation for automatic and manual control of the aircraft during all phases of flight. Attention is given to techniques for writing and using assertions to test flight software, an experimental setup to test flight software, and language features to support efficient use of assertions.

Stability and accuracy analysis of some fully-discrete algorithms for the one-dimensional second-order wave equation

The present investigation is concerned with some basic results for a predictor-multicorrector algorithm applied to the one-dimensional wave equation, giving particular attention to so-called 2-pass explicit schemes in which both lumped and coupled mass matrices are employed. In an assessment of the accuracy and stability properties of the algorithms, use is made of the one-dimensional, second-order wave equation. The maximum stable time step of the lumped right-hand-side mass, 2-pass explicit algorithm is twice that of the 1-pass explicit algorithm. Improved accuracy is obtained by employing higher-order, or consistent, right-hand-side, mass.
