Comparison of high temperature, high frequency core loss and dynamic B-H loops of two 50 Ni-Fe crystalline alloys and an iron-based amorphous alloy

The availability of experimental data that characterizes the performance of soft magnetic materials for the combined conditions of high temperature and high frequency is almost nonexistent. An experimental investigation was conducted over the temperature range of 23 to 300 C and frequency range of 1 to 50 kHz to determine the effects of temperature and frequency on the core loss and dynamic B-H loops of three different soft magnetic materials; and oriented grain 50Ni-50Fe alloy, a nonoriented grain 50Ni-Fe alloy, and an iron based amorphous material (Metglas 2605SC). A comparison of these materials shows that the nonoriented grain 50Ni-50Fe alloy tends to have either the lowest or next lowest core loss for all temperatures and frequencies investigated.

1000 to 1200 K time-dependent compressive deformation of single-crystalline and polycrystalline B2 Ni-40Al

The 1000-K and 1200-K time-dependent deformation of 100-line-oriented and non-100-line-oriented single crystals of Ni-40Al (made by a modified Bridgman technique) was examined over a large range of strain rates (from 0.1 to 10 to the -7th per sec). The results were compared with those for polycrystalline Ni-40Al made by hot pressing XD synthesized powder. The results from measurements of slow-plastic-strain-rate properties of the two materials show that single crystals offer no strength advantage over polycrystalline material. Both forms were found to deform via a dislocation climb mechanism.

Understanding crystallinity in aromatic polyimides

Aromatic polyimides are a class of polymers that show remarkable thermal stability, strength, and toughness. These properties make them attractive candidates for use in high-performance carbon fiber composites for airborne and spaceborne structural components. Our research centered on the development of an understanding of the underlying process of crystallite formation in a particular class of aryl polyimides for which there are some x-ray crystallographic data available. The ultimate aim of the project is to be able to develop a model sufficiently flexible to be able, on the basis of the chemical structure of a polymer in this class, to predict: (1) whether it will be prone to form crystallites; (2) crystallographic features of the crystallites; and (3) synthesis and/or processing conditions that will be favorable or unfavorable to crystallite formation. This will provide guidance to the laboratory chemists in their choice of candidate polymers and processing methods.

Methods of determining loads and fiber orientations in anisotropic non-crystalline materials using energy flux deviation

An ultrasonic wave is applied to an anisotropic sample material in an initial direction and an angle of flux deviation of the ultrasonic wave front is measured from this initial direction. This flux deviation angle is induced by the unknown applied load. The flux shift is determined between this flux deviation angle and a previously determined angle of flux deviation of an ultrasonic wave applied to a similar anisotropic reference material under an initial known load condition. This determined flux shift is then compared to a plurality of flux shifts of a similarly tested, similar anisotropic reference material under a plurality of respective, known load conditions, whereby the load applied to the particular anisotropic sample material is determined. A related method is disclosed for determining the fiber orientation from known loads and a determined flux shift.

Temperature dependence of nu3 and nu4 bandwidths and complex refractive indices for crystalline methane

Infrared spectra of thin films of pure CH4 have been measured for a range of temperatures from 22 to 68 K. The bandwidth for the fundamental nu3 near 3000/cm varies from 12.7 to 33.2/cm, while that for nu4 near 1300/cm varies from 6.2 to 16.0/cm. The real and imaginary parts of the index of refraction also exhibit significant dependence on temperature. These broadband measurements at low temperatures are useful for an understanding of clouds and hazes in the atmosphere of Uranus, clouds and ices in the atmosphere of Titan, and ices on the surfaces of Pluto and Triton.

Method of determining load in anisotropic non-crystalline materials using energy flux deviation

An ultrasonic wave is applied to an anisotropic sample material in an initial direction and the intensity of the ultrasonic wave is measured on an opposite surface of the sample material by two adjacent receiving points located in an array of receiving points. A ratio is determined between the measured intensities of two adjacent receiving points, the ratio being indicative of an angle of flux deviation from the initial direction caused by an unknown applied load. This determined ratio is then compared to a plurality of ratios of a similarly tested, similar anisotropic reference material under a plurality of respective, known load conditions, whereby the load applied to the particular anisotropic sample material is determined. A related method is disclosed for determining the fiber orientation from known loads and a determined flux shift.

Effect of microwave-enhanced superconductivity in YBa2Cu3O7 Bi-crystalline grain bounda ry weak-links

We have studied systematically the effect of microwave irradiation on the temperature dependent resistivity (R(I) and the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of YBa2Gu3O(7 - x) (YBCO) bicrystalline grain boundary weak-links (GBWL's), with grain boundary of three different tilt angles. The superconducting transition temperature, T(sub c), has significant enhancement upon microwave irradiation. The microwave enhanced T(sub c) is increased as a function of incident microwave power, but limited to an optimum power level. The GBWL's of 45 deg tilt boundary has shown to be most sensitive to the microwave irradiation power, and the GBWL's of 36.8 deg tilt boundary has displayed a moderate response. In contrast, no enhancement of T(sub c) was observed in the GBWL's of 24 deg tilt boundary, as well as in the uniform films. Under the microwave irradiation, the R(T) dependent is hystertic as the transition taken from superconducting state to normal state and vice versa. Mechanisms associated with the redistribution of nonequilibrium quasiparticles under microwave irradiation are discussed.

Macroscopic and bulk-controlled elastic modes in an interaction of interstitial alcali metal cations within a face-centered cubic crystalline fullerine

The calculations in a majority of previous works for the fulleride (AqC-60) crystals were performed within the framework of the rigid-lattice model, neglecting the distortion relaxation of the host fullerene (C-60) crystal caused by the interstitial alkali-metal (A) cations. However, an each cation is a source of a static distortion field, and the resulting field is a superposition of such fields generated by all cations. This is a reason why the host-crystal distortions depend on the A-cations configurations, i.e. on a type of a spatial bulk distribution of interstitial cations. The given paper seeks to find a functional relation between the amplitudes of the doping-induced structure-distortion waves and of static concentration ones. A semiphenomenological model is constructed here within the scope of statistical-thermodynamic treatment and using the lattice-statistics simulation method(*). In this model the effects due to the presence of q solute A cations over available interstices (per unit cell) on the static inherent reorientation and/or displacements of the solvent molecules from the 'average-lattice' sites' as well as on the lattice parameter a of a elastically-anysotropic 'cubic' C-60 crystal are taken into account.

Crystalline Hors d'Oeuvres

This is a laboratory activity to be used in the high school Materials Science and Technologies (MST) classroom. The objective of the lab is to develop macroscopic models for several types of crystal lattices. The students individually construct a unit cell out of toothpicks and candies and then join the cells with those of the other students. Upon completion, three macroscopic crystal lattices will have been created.

Electro-Optically Active Monomers: Synthesis and Characterization of Thin Films of Liquid Crystalline Substituted Polyacetylenes

The overall objective of this study was the description of the behavior of mesogen substituted acetylene monomers and polymers in monolayer films at the air/water interface and as multilayer films including the formation of such films. Fundamental knowledge to be gained would include the effect of balancing hydrophilic and hydrophobic tendencies in a molecule more complex than the classical fatty acids or lipids. The effect of molecular shape on the packing and thus the ultimate stability of monolayers formed from these new molecules was explored. The work takes on the challenge of preorienting monomers in well-ordered arrays prior to attempting polymerization with the hope that order would be preserved in any resulting polymer. New knowledge gained with regard to the acetylenic monomers includes processing of the acetylene monomer into multi-layer films, followed by the design and synthesis of a second generation of improved monomer structure for superior LBK film transfer properties. A third generation of acetylenic monomer was synthesized which approaches more closely the goal of solid state polymerization of these materials. A parallel study took a different approach. The materials are pre-formed poly(phenylene-acetylene) polymers so questions about reactivity are mute. The materials are a variation on the well-known hairy-rod polymers with regard to their Langmuir film-forming properties. Overall, the goal was to demonstrate that these polymers could be processed into NLO materials with novel polar order.

Properties of Single Crystalline Semiconducting CoSb3

A study of the thermoelectric properties of the skutterudite compound CoSb3 was carried out on single crystals grown by the Bridgman gradient freeze technique. p- and n-type samples were obtained over a wide range of carrier concentration. Undoped As-grown crystals show p-type conductivity while n-type samples were obtained by addition of Te or Pd. Samples were characterized by x-ray diffractometry, electron microprobe analysis, and density measurements. The physical properties of CoSb3 such as linear thermal expansion coefficient, sound velocity, and Debye temperature were also determined and are presented. Seebeck coefficient, electrical resistivity, thermal conductivity, and Hall effect measurements were performed between room temperature and about 900 K. Exceptionally high Hall mobilities were obtained on p-type samples with a maximum room-temperature Hall mobility of 3300 sq cm/V.s at a carrier concentration of 1 x 10(exp 17)/cc. The results of the transport property measurements are discussed and are in agreement with some recent predictions based on band structure calculations. The potential of CoSb3 for thermoelectric applications is evaluated.

Raman and Photoluminescence Spectroscopy of Nano-crystalline PbTiO3 Sensor Materials with Different Doping Ions

Raman spectra & photoluminescence studies in PbTiO3, have been carried out, as a function of particle size, temperature, pressure and dopants. There appears respectively a distinct temperature-induced soft mode phase transition in each sample whose Curie temperature can be determined from the mean-field theory. The detailed Curie temperature shift in the modified PbTiO3 ceramics by Ba, Sr, La and Zr, has been investigated as a function of particle size. Pressure-induced phase transitions display an obvious diffuse behavior. Room temperature photoluminescence for nanocrystalline Ba(1-x)Pb(x)TiO3 have been observed. These studies favor preparations of high efficiency PbTiO3 sensors.

Mid-Infrared Spectrum of the Zodiacal Emission: Detection of Crystalline Silicates in Interplanetary Dust

Within a few astronomical units of the Sun the solar system is filled with interplanetary dust, which is believed to be dust of cometary and asteroidal origin. Spectroscopic observations of the zodiacal emission with moderate resolution provide key information on the composition and size distribution of the dust in the interplanetary space. They can be compared directly to laboratory measurements of candidate materials, meteorites, and dust particles collected in the stratosphere. Recently mid-infrared spectroscopic observations of the zodiacal emission have been made by two instruments on board the Infrared Space Observatory; the camera (ISOCAM) and the spectrophotometer (ISOPHOT-S). A broad excess emission feature in the 9-11 micron range is reported in the ISOCAM spectrum, whereas the ISOPHOT-S spectra in 6-12 microns can be well fitted by a blackbody radiation without spectral features.
