One- and two-body current contributions to lepton-nucleus scattering

Modeling lepton-nucleus scattering with the accuracy required to extract neutrino-oscillation parameters from long- and short-baseline experiments necessitates retaining most quantum-mechanical effects. One such effect is the interference between one- and two-body current operators in the transition currents, which has been known to enhance the cross sections, especially in transverse kinematics. Here, we incorporate such interference in the spectral function formalism, which combines relativistic currents and kinematics with an accurate description of the initial target state. Our analysis of lepton-scattering off 12 C demonstrates that interference effects appreciably enhance the transverse electromagnetic response functions and the flux-folded neutrino-nucleus cross section, in both cases, improving the agreement with experimental data. We discuss the impact on the neutrino-oscillation program and the determination of nucleon axial form factors.

First-principles calculation of spin and orbital contributions to magnetically ordered moments in Sr 2 IrO 4

Here, we show how an accurate first-principles treatment of the canted-anti-ferromagnetic ground state of Sr 2 IrO 4 , a prototypical 5d correlated spin-orbit coupled material, can be obtained without invoking any free parameters, such as the Hubbard $\textit{U}$ or tuning the spin-orbit coupling strength. Our theoretically predicted iridium magnetic moment of 0.250$μ_B$, canted by 12.6° off the $\textit{a}$ axis, is in accord with experimental results. By resolving the magnetic moments into their spin and orbital components, we show that our theoretically obtained variation of the magnetic scattering amplitude $\langle M_m \rangle$ as a function of the polarization angle is consistent with recent nonresonant magnetic x-ray scattering measurements. The computed value of the band gap (55 meV) is also in line with the corresponding experimental values. A comparison of the band structure to that of the cuprates suggests the presence of incommensurate charge-density wave phases in Sr 2 IrO 4 .

Unraveling higher-order contributions to spin excitations probed using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) is an evolving tool for investigating the spin dynamics of strongly correlated materials, which complements inelastic neutron scattering. In isotropic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (HAFM) spin chains, both techniques have observed non-spin-conserving (NSC) excitations confined to the two-spinon phase space. However, a recent O K-edge RIXS study of the one-dimensional HAFM Sr 2 CuO 3 observed spin-conserving (SC) four-spinon excitations outside the two-spinon phase space. Here, we demonstrate that analogous four-spinon excitations can also be accessed at the Cu L 3 edge in the related material SrCuO 2 . Through detailed modeling, we establish that these excitations appear in both the SC and NSC channels of the Cu L 3 edge, and are only captured by higher-order terms in the ultrashort core-hole lifetime expansion. Finally, since these terms encode information about spin-spin correlations extending beyond nearest neighbors, our results offer different possibilities for studying nonlocal spin correlations in quantum magnets.

Two- and three-particle nonflow contributions to the chiral magnetic effect measurement by spectator and participant planes in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Correlation measurements with respect to the spectator and participant planes in relativistic heavy ion collisions were proposed to extract the chiral magnetic effect (CME) from background dominated azimuthal correlators. Here, this paper investigates the effects of two- and three-particle nonflow correlations on the extracted CME signal fraction, f CME . It is found, guided by a multiphase transport (ampt) model and the heavy ion jet interaction generator (hijing) together with experimental data, that the nonflow effects amount to approximately (4 ± 5)% and (–5 ± 3)% without and with pseudorapidity gaps, respectively, in 20–50% centrality Au + Au collisions at √ s NN = 200 GeV.
