Simplification of the Grid Model and its Impact on the Analysis of Electrical Power Systems

Here, this paper analyzes the impact of the use of Kron reduction on the state variables of a three-phase electrical system, even when it does not meet the necessary conditions for its application. Reduction is applied to a power line model to eliminate the equation corresponding to the neutral conductor of the line. The ATP program is used to model and simulate the behavior of an electrical system considering different degrees of disequilibrium as a reference for the comparison of results. The results show that under certain conditions of disequilibrium the Kron reduction can lead to significant errors in the state variables of the system.

Low-field-orientation effect on REBCO tape performance and its power cable application

Low field characteristics, including field orientation dependence relations for four different commercially available REBCO tapes, were investigated in an external field of up to 0.3 T at 77 K. A design method of the performance of a twisted stacked-tape conductor (TSTC) has been developed for a power transmission line. Cable critical current is obtained from an averaged self-field distributed over the cable cross section and the minimum critical current obtained from the field orientation dependence in transverse fields experimentally measured for the single tapes. The performance of three types of TSTCs, i.e., single-, double-, and triple-channel configurations, has been assessed for the four REBCO tapes.

RECORD FAST CYCLING ACCELERATOR MAGNET BASED ON HIGH TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTOR

We report on the High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) based prototype accelerator magnet capable to operate at 12 T/s B-field ramping rate with a very low supporting cryogenic cooling power thus indicating a feasibility of its application in the accelerator requiring high repetition rate and high average beam power. The magnet is designed to simultaneously accelerate two particle beams in the separate beam gaps energized by a single conductor. The design, construction and the power test of the prototype fast-cycling HTS based accelerator magnet is presented while the more detailed description and power test data analysis s given in [1]. As example, the measured cryogenic power loss limit is discussed in terms of the feasibility of application of such a magnet for the construction of the 8 GeV dual proton beam Booster.

Configurable luminaire with light sources variably oriented with respect to an array of concave mirrors

An array of LEDs is supported by a support mechanism that both supports conductors leading to the LEDs and sinks heat from the LEDs. The support mechanism may be a transparent heat-conducting sheet or an array of cantilevered arms at different angles that support the LEDs and sink heat. This reduces the blockage of light. The LEDs are positioned generally in the focal plane of an array of concave mirrors that collimate the light. The LEDs and array of mirrors are translatable with respect to one another to steer the aggregate light beam to customize the emission. The LEDs may be variably oriented with respect to the associated mirror apertures so as to create different light beams emitted from different ones of the mirrors.

Aqueous Na-ion redox flow battery with ceramic NaSICON membrane

A redox flow battery is described herein that has a sodium-super-ionic-conductor NaSICON barrier disposed between an anolyte chamber of the battery and the catholyte chamber of the battery. The NaSICON barrier prevents crossover of solvents or active redox species between the anolyte chamber and the catholyte chamber, while permitting transport of sodium ions between the chambers. In exemplary embodiments, the anolyte chamber includes an anolyte solution that comprises a first active redox species dissolved in a first solvent, while the catholyte chamber includes a catholyte solution that comprises a second active redox species dissolved in a second solvent.

Edge ICRF simulations in 3D geometry: From MHD equilibrium to coupling determination

We present in this work a consistent numerical scheme that allows the computation of 3D magnetic fields a nd 3D density profiles and their usage in ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) coupling simulations. We first utilize the PARVMEC code to compute the 3D free-boundary plasma equilibrium in the ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) approximation. Since the PARVMEC solution is only defined within the last closed flux surface (LCFS), the magnetic field domain is extended to the scrape-off layer (SOL) via the BMW code, which computes a divergence-free magnetic field solution arising from the external conductors’ vacuum field a nd t he PARVMEC flux surface currents. This magnetic reconstruction is then used in the EMC3-EIRENE transport code in order to compute 3D density profiles. In the last step, the RAPLICASOL code is utilized to compute the ICRF antenna S-matrices resulting from the 3D density profiles. We exemplify this scheme for the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. A new implementation of a curved model for the ASDEX Upgrade ICRF 2-strap antenna in RAPLICASOL allows simulations in realistic geometry, without any coordinate transformations.

Additive Manufacturing of Frequency-Agile W-Band Packaging

Abstract —In this paper we demonstrate a fully additively manufactured packaged W-band amplifier with integrated bypass capacitors. This package was fabricated using a chip-first approach and aerosol jet printing. Package substrates (dielectrics), conductors and interconnects are printed around a bare die attached to a carrier. This package uses shaped ramp interconnects, allowing for frequency agnostic package performance of the interconnect with no impedance discontinuity, within the physical limits of the printer. High dielectric constant thin films of a polymer-matrix nanocomposite for bypass capacitors were printed using multi-material aerosol jet printing. The maximum measured packaged gain is 14.9 dB in the W-band, compared to the maximum bare die gain of 15.5 dB in the same frequency range. From 75 - 92 GHz, the average package loss is 1.1 dB including 3 mm transmission line, interconnects, and a GSG launch structure correlating to an average loss of 0.37 dB/mm.

Electroabsorption optical modulator

An electroabsorption modulator that operates based on electroabsorption of a surface plasmon polariton mode is improved by various structural changes and/or selection of different materials. For example, at least a portion of the waveguide may be made to be conductive, e.g., by doping. Also, layers that make up the modulator structure may be placed along sides of waveguides in addition to or instead of simply on the top thereof. High permittivity gate dielectric materials may be employed. Also, materials other than ITO may be employed as a transparent conductor. Such an improved plasmonic electroabsorption modulator can be fabricated using standard semiconductor processing techniques and may be integrated with standard photonic integrated circuits, including silicon photonics and compound semiconductor-based platforms. Advantageously, high-speed, low-voltage operation over a wide spectrum of wavelengths may be achieved.

Reprogrammable electro-chemo-optical devices and methods for using the same

Reconfigurable, active optical components can flexibly manipulate light. One example of these components is an electro-chemo-optical device that utilizes a metal oxide film with a complex refractive index that varies as a function of an oxygen vacancy concentration. The optical device may include a metal oxide film, a first electrode, and a second electrode. The first electrode and the second electrode may be used to supply a bias voltage to induce a change in the oxygen vacancy concentration in order to change the optical properties (absorbance, transmittance, and/or reflectance) of the optical device. The magnitude and spatial distribution of the oxygen vacancy concentration may be altered to affect the optical properties of the optical device. In some designs, the optical device may also include an ionic conductor and oxygen source to supply/receive oxygen ions to/from the metal oxide film.

Systems and methods for reworking shingled solar cell modules

A high efficiency configuration for a solar cell module comprises solar cells arranged in a shingled manner to form super cells, which may be arranged to efficiently use the area of the solar module, reduce series resistance, and increase module efficiency. Removing a defective solar cell from a super cell may be difficult, however. It may therefore be advantageous to bypass defective solar cells in a super cell rather than remove and replace them. A bypass conductor may be applied to the rear surface of the super cell to bypass one or more defective solar cells in a super cell or in a solar module comprising super cells.
