Softwarized Federations of Science Instruments with Edge-Continuum Containers

Significant expansion of capabilities of DOE science complex of supercomputers, instruments and networks is expected as powerful experimental facilities, exascale computers and terabit networks are added. Combined with the advances in edge and cloud computing technologies, DOE science users now have the promise of unprecedented execution of complex, continuum workflows, namely, small and latency-sensitive computations at the edge and site, massive computations at remote HPC systems, and everything in between on the cloud. But, bringing this capability to the science user requires overcoming the overwhelming complexity of forming the federations of systems, and efficiently and effectively orchestrating the workflows while ensuring high utilization of the expensive facilities. Current manual configuration of the federated systems simply will not scale, since the coordination across sites may take weeks to months, often leading to under-utilized and hard-to-diagnose compositions. A powerful, composable software stack will be developed to (i) wrap the systems so that federations can be composed fast in software, and (ii) containerize computations to be orchestrated across the edge, site, cloud and HPC resources.

Method and system for treatment of a gas stream that contains carbon dioxide

A method for separating carbon dioxide (CO2) from a gas stream is disclosed, in which the gas stream is reacted with a lean aminosilicone solvent in an absorber, resulting in a rich aminosilicone solvent that is then treated in a desorber to release the CO2 and regenerate lean aminosilicone solvent in a desorption reaction. The regenerated solvent is directed into a steam-producing, indirect heat exchanger that is configured to supply steam to the desorber at a temperature high enough to augment the desorption reaction. Also, selected amounts of make-up water are added to the rich aminosilicone solvent at one or more process locations between the absorber and the desorber, to lower the viscosity of the solvent and to lower the temperature required for the desorption reaction.

Porous thermally insulating compositions containing hollow spherical nanoparticles

A method of thermally insulating a surface, the method comprising applying a coating of a thermally insulating composition onto said surface, wherein said thermally insulating composition comprises: (i) hollow spherical nanoparticles having a mean particle size of less than 800 nm in diameter and a particle size distribution in which at least 90% of the hollow spherical nanoparticles have a size within ±20% of said mean particle size, and a first layer of cationic or anionic molecules attached to said surfaces of the hollow spherical nanoparticles; and (ii) a second layer of molecules of opposite charge to the first layer of molecules, wherein said second layer of molecules of opposite charge are ionically associated with said first layer of molecules, wherein the molecules in said second layer have at least eight carbon atoms.

Method and apparatus for capturing carbon dioxide during combustion of carbon containing fuel

A boiler system having a series of boilers. Each boiler includes a shell having an upstream end, a downstream end, and a hollow interior. The boilers also have an oxidizer inlet entering the hollow interior adjacent the upstream end of the shell and a fuel nozzle positioned adjacent the upstream end of the shell for introducing fuel into the hollow interior of the shell. Each boiler includes a flue duct connected to the shell adjacent the downstream end for transporting flue gas from the hollow interior. Oxygen is delivered to the oxidizer inlet of the first boiler in the series. Flue gas from the immediately preceding boiler in the series is delivered through the oxidizer inlet of each boiler subsequent to the first boiler in the series.

Process to produce 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from carbohydrates using a solvent system containing water and a polar aprotic solvent

A method to produce 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from C6 carbohydrates. The method includes the steps of reacting a reactant comprising at least one C6 carbohydrate, in a reaction mixture comprising at least about 5% (v/v) water, a polar, aprotic solvent, and an acid, for a time, at a temperature, and at a hydrogen ion concentration wherein at least a portion of the C6 carbohydrate present in the reactant is converted to 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (“HMF”).
