Satellite B-ISDN traffic analysis

The impact of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) traffic on the advanced satellite broadband integrated services digital network (B-ISDN) with onboard processing is reported. Simulation models were built to analyze the cell transfer performance through the statistical multiplexer at the earth station and the fast packet switch at the satellite. The effectiveness of ground ATM cell preprocessing was established, as well as the performance of several schemes for improving the down-link beam utilization when the space segment employs a fast packet switch.

A B-ISDN-compatible modem/codec

Coded modulation techniques for development of a broadband integrated services digital network (B-ISDN)-compatible modem/codec are investigated. The selected baseband processor system must support transmission of 155.52 Mbit/s of data over an INTELSAT 72-MHz transponder. Performance objectives and fundamental system parameters, including channel symbol rate, code rate, and the modulation scheme are determined. From several candidate codes, a concatenated coding system consisting of a coded octal phase shift keying modulation as the inner code and a high rate Reed-Solomon as the outer code is selected and its bit error rate performance is analyzed by computer simulation. The hardware implementation of the decoder for the selected code is also described.

Comparison of high temperature, high frequency core loss and dynamic B-H loops of a 2V-49Fe-49Co and a grain oriented 3Si-Fe alloy

The design of power magnetic components such as transformers, inductors, motors, and generators, requires specific knowledge about the magnetic and electrical characteristics of the magnetic materials used in these components. Limited experimental data exists that characterizes the performance of soft magnetic materials for the combined conditions of high temperature and high frequency over a wide flux density range. An experimental investigation of a 2V-49-Fe-49Co (Supermendur) and a grain oriented 3 Si-Fe (Magnesil) alloy was conducted over the temperature range of 23 to 300 C and frequency range of 0.1 to 10 kHz. The effects of temperature, frequency, and maximum flux density on the core loss and dynamic B-H loops for sinusoidal voltage excitation conditions are examined for each of these materials. A comparison of the core loss of these two materials is also made over the temperature and frequency range investigated.

Gravity Probe-B Spacecraft attitude control based on the dynamics of slosh wave-induced fluid stress distribution on rotating dewar container of cryogenic propellant

The dynamical behavior of fluids, in particular the effect of surface tension on partially-filled rotating fluids, in a full-scale Gravity Probe-B Spacecraft propellant dewar tank imposed by various frequencies of gravity jitters have been investigated. Results show that fluid stress distribution exerted on the outer and inner walls of rotating dewar are closely related to the characteristics of slosh waves excited on the liquid-vapor interface in the rotating dewar tank. This can provide a set of tool for the spacecraft dynamic control leading toward the control of spacecraft unbalance caused by the uneven fluid stress distribution due to slosh wave excitations.

Installing scientific instruments into a cold LHe dewar - The Gravity Probe B approach

Gravity Probe B is an orbital test of Einstein's general theory of relativity using gyroscopes. The precession of the gyroscopes will measure both the geodetic effect (6.6 arcsec/yr) through the curved space-time surrounding the earth and the motional effect (0.042 arcsec/yr) due to the rotating earth dragging space-time around with it. To achieve the extraordinary accuracies needed to measure these small precessions, it is necessary to have the gyroscopes operating in the following environments: a vacuum of less than 10 exp -10 torr; an acceleration level of less than 10 exp -10 g's; a magnetic field of less than 10 exp -7 gauss; and a temperature near 2 K. This paper discusses designs that allow scientific instruments to be installed into a dewar at 4.2 K. Methods for structurally supporting the instruments, transferring heat across joints at low temperature in vacuum, and excluding air during the insertion process are discussed. The structural support method is designed for Shuttle launch loads.

Study of external dynamic flap loads on a 6 percent B-1B model

The origin of dynamic pressure loads on external divergent engine nozzle flaps of the B-1B aircraft was investigated in the NASA/LaRC 16 foot transonic tunnel using a 6 percent full span model with powered engine nacelles. External flap dynamic loads and afterbody drag associated with flap removal were measured using this model. Both dry and max. A/B power nozzles were evaluated in this study. As a result of this study, the principal mechanisms responsible for high dynamic external flap loads were determined along with performance penalty associated with flap removal.

Dipole moments and transition probabilities of the i 3Pi sub g-b 3Sigma(+) sub u, c 3Pi sub u-a 3Sigma(+) sub g, and i 3Pi sub g-c 3Pi sub u systems of molecular hydrogen

Bonn-Oppenheimer-based ab initio calculations of dipole moments from the i 3Pi sub g-b 3Sigma(+) sub u, c 3Pi sub u-a 3Sigma(+) sub g, and i 3Pi sub g-c 3Pi sub u transitions of H2 have been conducted, to yield a tabulation of the dipole transition probabilities and Franck-Condon factors. These factors are given for transitions originating in the lowest vibrational level of the ground X 1Sigma(+) sub g state.

Satellite delivery of B-ISDN services

This paper will address the role of technology in the satellite delivery of B-ISDN services. Satellites excel in serving remote users and in providing multicast and broadcast services. Benefits to potential users employing these satellite broadband services will be examined together with their respective network architecture. Two application requirements are then proposed. The critical technologies needed in the realization of these architectures will be identified.

Elemental abundances of the B and A stars Gamma Geminorum, 7 Sextantis, HR 4817, and HR 5780

Fine analyses of the B and A stars, Gamma Geminorum, 7 Sextantis, HR 4817, and HR 5780 are performed. Although the data cover rather limited spectral regions, still useful results were obtained. The data were mostly obtained at the KPNO coude feed telescope with CCD TI No. 3, camera 5, and grating A. The He/H ratio of HR 4817 confirms the similarity of many abundance values with those of the peculiar Mn star 53 Tauri. For the most part Gamma Gem, 7 Sex, and HR 5780 have derived abundances similar to those of other normal sharp-lined stars of similar effective temperature.

The isotopic composition of cosmic-ray B, C, N, and O - Evidence for an overabundance of O-18

New observations of galactic cosmic rays at higher energies (about 400-780 MeV/nucleon) than obtained in previous direct mass measurements have resulted in determinations of the isotopic composition of B, C, N, and O. The derived cosmic-ray source abundances provide evidence for an enhancement of O-18/O-16 by a factor of 5.6 +/- 1.9 over the solar system value and give a C-13/C-12 ratio consistent with the solar system abundance ratio, but lower than some recent measurements of the local interstellar medium.

Data reduction using cubic rational B-splines

A geometric method is proposed for fitting rational cubic B-spline curves to data that represent smooth curves including intersection or silhouette lines. The algorithm is based on the convex hull and the variation diminishing properties of Bezier/B-spline curves. The algorithm has the following structure: it tries to fit one Bezier segment to the entire data set and if it is impossible it subdivides the data set and reconsiders the subset. After accepting the subset the algorithm tries to find the longest run of points within a tolerance and then approximates this set with a Bezier cubic segment. The algorithm uses this procedure repeatedly to the rest of the data points until all points are fitted. It is concluded that the algorithm delivers fitting curves which approximate the data with high accuracy even in cases with large tolerances.

Comparison of high temperature, high frequency core loss and dynamic B-H loops of two 50 Ni-Fe crystalline alloys and an iron-based amorphous alloy

The availability of experimental data that characterize the performance of soft magnetic materials for the combined conditions of high temperature and high frequency is almost nonexistent. An experimental investigation was conducted over the temperature range of 23 to 300 C and frequency range of 1 to 50 kHz to determine the effects of temperature and frequency on the core loss and dynamic B-H loops of three different soft magnetic materials: an oriented-grain 50Ni-50Fe alloy, a nonoriented-grain 50Ni-50Fe alloy, and an iron-based amorphous material (Metglas 2605SC). A comparison of these materials shows that the nonoriented-grain 50Ni-50Fe alloy tends to have either the lowest or the next lowest core loss for all temperatures and frequencies investigated.

QSO's to B less than 22 and the cosmic x ray background radiation: A fluctuations correlation approach

The contribution of faint Quasi Stellar Objects (QSO's) and other discrete sources to the cosmic X-Ray Background (XRB) is estimated using an optically selected QSO sample in SA 68.2 in conjunction with archived x-ray images from the Einstein Image Proportional Counter (IPC). A new generalization of the 'x-ray image stacking' technique is employed; this new approach tests for a positional 'correlation' between positive x-ray fluctuations in the IPC images, and the locations of the optically selected QSO's. Correlation with thirty SA 68.2 QSO's permits a highly sensitive measurement of the ensemble mean x-ray flux for QSO's with 19 less than B(sub J) less than 22. Although the IPC images are of modest depth, a limiting sensitivity 1.2 times 10 to the minus 14th power erg/sec/sq cm (0.3 to 3.5 keV) is effectively archieved comparable to that of the Rosat medium deep surveys.

L- and K-band LMSS propagation measurements using MARECS-B, OLYMPUS, and ACTS

L-band measurements of land mobile satellite systems (LMSS) propagation effects were last made at the end of 1988, but some voids were left in the database, making modeling of low elevation roadside tree shadowing and multipath reflections difficult for some path geometries. Transmission of a pilot tone from MARECS-B at 55 deg West during Sep. and Dec. 1991 gave an opportunity to fill the gaps in the experimental results. Two campaigns during which fade data were obtained at elevation angles from 7 deg to 40 deg are described. Below 15 deg, specular terrain reflections in a non-shadowing, hilly environment were observed to introduce significant fading. Although the reflecting surface was at a distance of up to several km, it is shown that the reflected signals are delayed by less than 1 microsec. Mobile measurements were also attempted receiving the 20 GHz Olympus beacon, but antenna pointing problems restricted first results to straight-line driving.
