Irrigation system

A gravity irrigation system includes a distribution piping having apertures to distribute water to a field, and a valve located upstream of the distribution piping. The valve limits a pressure of the water being delivered to the distribution piping. The system also includes a sump to receive the water at a lowest elevation of the field, a depth sensor disposed within the sump, and a return pump disposed at least partially within the sump to move the water to an elevated portion of the field. The system also includes a motor to drive the return pump, and a power source coupled to a variable frequency drive that powers the motor and controls a motor speed proportionately to an indication of the depth sensor. The system also includes a transfer piping to bring the water from the return pump to a check valve and to the distribution piping.

McMillan map and nonlinear Twiss parameters

In this article we consider two dynamical systems: the McMillan sextupole and octupole integrable mappings originally introduced by Edwin McMillan; the second one is also known as canonical McMillan map. Both of them are simplest symmetric McMillan maps with only one intrinsic parameter, the trace of the Jacobian at the fixed point. While these dynamical systems have numerous of applications and are used in many areas of math and physics, some of their dynamical properties have not been described yet. We fulfill the gap and provide complete description of all stable trajectories including parametrization of invariant curves, Pioncaré rotation numbers and canonical action-angle variables. In the second part we relate these maps with general chaotic map in McMillan-Turaev form. We show that McMillan sextupole and octupole mappings are first order approximations of dynamics around the fixed point, in a similar way as linear map and quadratic invariant (Courant-Snyder invariant in accelerator physics) is the zeroth order approximation (known as linearization). Finally we suggest the new formalism of nonlinear Twiss parameters which incorporate dependence of rotation number as a function of amplitude, in contrast to e.g. betatron phase advance used in accelerator physics which is independent of amplitude. Specifically in application to accelerator physics this new formalism is capable of predicting dynamical aperture around 1-st, 2-nd, 3-rd and 4-th order resonances for flat beams, which is critical for beam injection/extraction.

Finding Beam Loss Locations at PIP2IT Accelerator With Oscillating Dipole Correctors

The PIP2IT accelerator was assembled in multiple stages in 2014 - 2021 to test concepts and components of the future PIP-II linac that is being constructed at Fermilab. In its final configuration, PIP2IT accelerated a 0.55 ms x 20 Hz x 2 mA H- beam to 16 MeV. To determine location of the beam loss in the accelerators low-energy part, where radiation monitors are ineffective, a method using oscillating trajectories was implemented. If the beam is scraped at an aperture limitation, moving its centroid with two dipole correctors located upstream and oscillating in sync, produces a line at the corresponding frequency in spectra of BPM sum signals downstream of the loss point. Comparison of these responses along the beam line allows to find the loss location. The paper describes the method and results of its implementation at PIP2IT.

Gamma-Ray Imaging to Monitor Accumulating Holdup

Over time, nuclear materials can accumulate in process equipment and keeping track of such material is of interest to many stakeholder communities including safeguards, process monitoring, criticality safety, and radiological safety. Passive gamma-ray imaging provides a visual and quantitative tool that can be applied to this problem, allowing one to determine the amount of material present from the images. In this work we emulate the accumulation of highly enriched uranium (HEU) in a large rectangular stainless-steel duct by stacking 5, 27 × 50 cm2 cards, each of which has approximately 11 g of 235U in oxide form distributed across its surface, behind each other. A series of images were collected using a coded-aperture gamma-ray imager, starting with a single card, adding a second card, etc. Long integrations were collected to allow evaluating the performance of the approach as a function of integration time. The images are analyzed using first principles to determine the amount of material in each image. The results are compared to the known amount of material in each configuration, and as a function of time. The analysis includes a first-principles error propagation and to further evaluate the uncertainty, a boot-strap sampling approach is also applied to the data. The work offers a proof of concept for unattended monitoring of uranium holdup with a quantitative gamma-ray imaging technique.

Symplectic Particle Tracking in a Thick Nonlinear McMillan Lens for the Fermilab Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA)

The McMillan system is a novel method to increase the tune spread of a beam without decreasing its dynamic aperture due to the systems integrability. While the ideal system is based on an infinitely thin kick, the physical design requires a thick electron lens, including a solenoid. Particle transport through the lens is difficult to simulate due to the nature of the force on the circulating beam. This paper demonstrates accurate simulation of a thick McMillan lens in a solenoid using symplectic integrators derived from Yoshidas method.

20 T Dipole Magnet Based on Hybrid HTS/LTS Cos-Theta Coils with Stress Management

This paper presents the design concept of the dipole magnet with 50 mm aperture, 20 T nominal field and 13% margin based on a six-layer cos-theta (CT) hybrid coil design. Due to the high stresses and strains in the coil at high field, Stress Management (SM) elements are implemented in the CT coil geometry. The results of magnet magnetic analysis are presented and discussed. The key parameters of this design are compared with the parameters of similar magnets based on block-type and canted cos-theta coils.

Numerical study of proppant transport and settling processes in fractures

Reservoir stimulation by creating hydraulically conductive fractures is the key step for enabling enhanced geothermal systems (EGS). The effectiveness of stimulation is significantly influenced by the deposition of proppant inside induced fractures. The transportation and settling of proppant in a propagating fracture is controlled by a multitude of operational and physical parameters, including the fracturing fluid rheology, injection rate, proppant concentration, fracture length/aperture evolution, proppant size/density/shape, etc. A numerical tool that robustly and efficiently accounts for all important attributes can facilitate the design and optimization of reservoir stimulation. This study presents the novel computational tool ELK (ELectrical fracKing) developed for the numerical simulation of proppant-fluid mixture circulation in a fractured geothermal reservoir. We enriched the MOOSE-based PorousFlow module with a suite of equations to consider the fluid-proppant mixture with particle-particle/fluid interactions, which include gravitational settling, particle convection, particle hampering, and strong density and viscosity contrasts. The computational tool is validated by comparing the predicted proppant bed evolution against two different laboratory scale experiments of proppant transport in a fixed aperture channel. Further parameter studies were performed, and the modeling results show that the proppant deposition is determined by the mixing characteristics and settling of the particles from the slurry. Concentration-dependent density and viscosity lead to an inhomogeneous distribution of the proppant, particle collision, and enhanced settling at the bottom of the fractures. Preliminary coupling with dynamic fracture propagation shows promising results and will be further developed to simulate hydraulic stimulation at high fidelity.

Terrain-aided position determination using range angle radar altimetry

Various embodiments described herein provide for a terrain-aided location determination using a range/angle radar altimetry. Range/angle radar systems use vertical synthetic aperture radar measurements which do not include any cross-track resolution, such that if a range/Doppler cloud from a single VSAR image is compared to a regular DEM, there can be ambiguity in determining the cross-track position. By modifying the DEM to inherently include additional terrain signature information that could be compared to VSAR measurement, the limitation can be overcome, and a single range/angle radar system can provide an accurate position without the additional complexity of a range/angle/angle radar system.
