Ion thruster performance model

A model of ion thruster performance is developed for high flux density, cusped magnetic field thruster designs. This model is formulated in terms of the average energy required to produce an ion in the discharge chamber plasma and the fraction of these ions that are extracted to form the beam. The direct loss of high energy (primary) electrons from the plasma to the anode is shown to have a major effect on thruster performance. The model provides simple algebraic equations enabling one to calculate the beam ion energy cost, the average discharge chamber plasma ion energy cost, the primary electron density, the primary-to-Maxwellian electron density ratio and the Maxwellian electron temperature. Experiments indicate that the model correctly predicts the variation in plasma ion energy cost for changes in propellant gas (Ar, Kr and Xe), grid transparency to neutral atoms, beam extraction area, discharge voltage, and discharge chamber wall temperature. The model and experiments indicate that thruster performance may be described in terms of only four thruster configuration dependent parameters and two operating parameters. The model also suggests that improved performance should be exhibited by thruster designs which extract a large fraction of the ions produced in the discharge chamber, which have good primary electron and neutral atom containment and which operate at high propellant flow rates.

Material Selection Considerations for Solar Ponds

Among the various candidate materials tested, stainless steel shows the best potential for applications as heat exchanger components in solar ponds. Even stainless steel may lead to pitting type of corrosion. Weight loss measurements are probably unsatisfactory for corrosion evaluation in solar pond situations. Also included are the results from the potentiodynamic anodic polarization analysis, corrosion rate calculation via corrosion behavior diagrams, and immersion weight loss measurements.

The discharge mechanism of the high-temperature arc

The mechanism of the high temperature Ar arc is interpreted considering those essential points in which it deviates from the known arcs based on earlier measurements and experiments. The following points are discussed individually: the charge carrier balance, the energy balance, the volt amp characteristics, and the difference between high temperature arcs in Ar and N. Besides the volt amp characteristic of a 10 mm long arc in Ar between 10 and 200 amp, the anode fall, cathode fall, and arc gradient were obtained with the aid of probes. The difference between Ar and N arcs are attributed to variations of the heat conditions and electrical conditions at different temperatures of the gas.

Axisymmetric electromagnetic field influence on the characteristic velocity of an arc-jet

Tests for determining the influence of an axisymmetric EM field on the characteristic velocity of an arc jet are presented. The experimental set up is briefly described. Tests were performed with rotation induced by the centrifugal and magnetic fields in the same sense. The fuels used were HE and N2 and the results are discussed. It is found that by variation of the induction, current, and arc jet strength, the behavior is determined essentially by the shape of the cathodic and anodic blobs on the electrodes together with their movement under the combined effect of the aerodynamic and magnetic fields. In view of the different characteristics of He and N2 in respect to the dissociation heat and ionization, it is expected that the regime of the arc jet when used with H2 fuel will be similar to that with He.

The evaluation of a deformable diffraction grating for a stigmatic EUV spectroheliometer

Two crucial areas in the development of the high resolution EUV spectroheliometer are the elastically deformable toroidal diffraction grating and the open-structure imaging pulse counting detector system. The optical performance of a high frequency toroidal grating at EUV wavelengths was verified with a 3600 groove/mm master grating on a spherical concave blank. An open-structure (256 x 1024) pixel, multi-anode microchannel array was developed and tested as a pulse counting detector system. These two systems verify the proof of concept of the spectroheliometer design.

Long-life high performance fuel cell program

A multihundred kilowatt Regenerative Fuel Cell for use in a space station is envisioned. Three 0.508 sq ft (471.9 cm) active area multicell stacks were assembled and endurance tested. The long term performance stability of the platinum on carbon catalyst configuration suitability of the lightweight graphite electrolyte reservoir plate, the stability of the free standing butyl bonded potassium titanate matrix structure, and the long life potential of a hybrid polysulfone cell edge frame construction were demonstrated. A 18,000 hour demonstration test of multicell stack to a continuous cyclical load profile was conducted. A total of 12,000 cycles was completed, confirming the ability of the alkaline fuel cell to operate to a load profile simulating Regenerative Fuel Cell operation. An orbiter production hydrogen recirculation pump employed in support of the cyclical load profile test completed 13,000 hours of maintenance free operation. Laboratory endurance tests demonstrated the suitability of the butyl bonded potassium matrix, perforated nickel foil electrode substrates, and carbon ribbed substrate anode for use in the alkaline fuel cell. Corrosion testing of materials at 250 F (121.1 C) in 42% wgt. potassium identified ceria, zirconia, strontium titanate, strontium zirconate and lithium cobaltate as candidate matrix materials.

Cathode degradation and erosion in high pressure arc discharges

The various processes which control cathode erosion and degradation were identified and evaluated. A direct current arc discharge was established between electrodes in a pressure-controlled gas flow environment. The cathode holder was designed for easy testing of various cathode materials. The anode was a water cooled copper collector electrode. The arc was powered by a dc power supply with current and voltage regulated cross-over control. Nitrogen and argon were used as propellants and the materials used were two percent thoriated tungsten, barium oxide impregnated porous tungsten, pure tungsten and lanthanum hexaboride. The configurations used were cylindrical solid rods, wire bundles supported by hollow molybdenum tubes, cylindrical hollow tubes, and hollow cathodes of the type used in ion thrusters. The results of the mass loss tests in nitrogen indicated that pure tungsten eroded at a rate more than 10 times faster than the rates of the impregnated tungsten materials. It was found that oxygen impurities of less than 0.5 percent in the nitrogen increased the mass loss rate by a factor of 4 over high purity nitrogen. At power levels less than 1 kW, cathode size and current level did not significantly affect the mass loss rate. The hollow cathode was found to be operable in argon and in nitrogen only at pressures below 400 and 200 torr, respectively.

Absolute and angular efficiencies of a microchannel-plate position-sensitive detector

This paper presents a characterization of a commercially available position-sensitive detector of energetic ions and neutrals. The detector consists of two microchannel plates followed by a resistive position-encoding anode. The work includes measurement of absolute efficiencies of H(+), He(+), and O(+) ions in the energy range between 250 and 5000 eV, measurement of relative detection efficiencies as a function of particle impact angle, and a simple method for accurate measurement of the time at which a particle strikes the detector.

Thermal design of the ACCESS erectable space truss

Thermal design requirements for the erectable truss beam to be assembled in-orbit during extra-vehicular activity as part of the ACCESS experiment to take place in 1985-1986 are formulated and assessed. The coatings, insulation, and materials chosen for the structural elements of the beam are detailed. A combined radiation and conduction thermal model reveals that worst-case thermal gradients within the ACCESS structure over plane-to-sun angles of 0 to 80 deg will be less than 29 F, which is within the allowable limit of 50 F. The individual strut insulation concept using aluminized Kapton is shown to offer significant advantages over white paint or a chromic acid anodized surface for controlling the thermal response.

Internal stresses in wear and corrosion resistant amorphous metallic coatings of (W/0.6/Re/0.4/)76B24 and (Mo/0.6/Ru/0.4/)82B18

Hard protective coatings in the W-Re-B and Mo-Ru-B alloy systems have been deposited by magnetron sputtering onto soda-lime glass and heat-treated AISI 52100 steel substrates. X-ray diffraction has confirmed the amorphous nature of the as-deposited coatings, and their crystallization temperatures were determined by differential thermal analysis to be 1000 and 790 C for W-Re-B and Mo-Ru-B coatings, respectively. Both coatings exhibit high microhardness; Mo-Ru-B, in addition, has excellent corrosion resistance by comparison with pure Mo at high anodic potentials. Attention is given to the influence of internal stresses on the protective properties of the coatings deposited under different conditions.

Energy dispersive X-ray diffraction in the diamond anvil, high-pressure apparatus - Comparison of synchrotron and conventional X-ray sources

The use of both conventional fixed-anode X-ray sources and synchrotron radiation to carry out energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction experiments at high pressure in a diamond anvil cell, is discussed. The photon flux at the sample and at the detector for the two cases are compared and the results are presented in graphs. It is shown that synchrotron radiation experiments can be performed with nearly two orders of magnitude increase in data rate if superior detectors and detector electronics are available.

Calcium depletion toward moderately reddened stars

Calcium depletions toward five moderately reddened (E/B - V/ greater than 0.35 and less than 0.45) stars and toward HD 147889, a heavily reddened (E/B - V/ = 1.08) member of the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex is reported. A developmental Multi-Anode Microchannel Array Detector was used to collect the data; its performance is characterized. Comparing the results for calcium from one line of sight to another and to those for other species, it is found that calcium exhibits a depletion pattern remarkably similar to that of silicon. The depletion of iron, on the other hand, has smaller variations and therefore does not correlate as well. Also, the depletion results for manganese and sulfur, both normally undepleted in diffuse clouds, have been included for comparison.

Fracture surface analysis in composite and titanium bonding

To understand the mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced composite materials, it is necessary to understand the mechanical properties of the matrix materials and of the reinforcing fibers. Another factor that can affect the mechanical properties of a composite material is the interaction between the fiber and the matrix. In general, composites with strong fiber matrix bonding will give higher modulus, lower toughness composites. Composites with weak bonding will have a lower modulus and more ductility. The situation becomes a bit more complex when all possibilities are examined. To be considered are the following: the properties of the surface layer on the fiber, the interactive forces between polymer and matrix, the surface roughness and porosity of the fiber, and the morphology of the matrix polymer at the fiber surface. In practice, the surface of the fibers is treated to enhance the mechanical properties of a composite. These treatments include anodization, acid etching, high temperature oxidation, and plasma oxidation, to name a few. The goal is to be able to predict the surface properties of carbon fibers treated in various ways, and then to relate surface properties to fiber matrix bonding.

Method and apparatus for rebalancing a REDOX flow cell system

A rebalance cell is provided for a REDOX electrochemical system of the type with anode and cathode fluids which are aqueous HC1 solutions with two metal species in each. The rebalance cell has a cathode compartment and a chlorine compartment separated by an ion permeable membrane. By applying an electrical potential to the rebalance cell while circulating cathode fluid through the cathode compartment and while circulating an identical fluid through the chlorine compartment, any significant imbalance of the REDOX system is prevented.

Surface discharge through an insulator in a vacuum

A model for the mechanism of stationary discharges over insulators in a vacuum was developed. Upon introduction of this discharge, the insulator charges as a result of secondary emissions, in such a way that electrons coming from the cathode strike with an average secondary electron yield of 1, and so that the secondary electrons return again to the insulator through the electric field near the insulator. When the secondary electrons strike, electrons with an average yield of 1 are released again. The electrons move in short faults toward the anode, which they strike with lesser energy.

Corrosion fatigue of 2219-T87 aluminum alloy

Corrosion fatigue studies were conducted on bare, chemical conversion coated, and anodized 2219-T87 aluminum alloy. These tests were performed using a rotating beam machine running at a velocity of 2500 rpm. The corrosive environments tested were distilled water, 100 ppm NaCl, and 3.5 percent NaCl. Results were compared to the endurance limit in air. An evaluation of the effect of protective coatings on corrosion fatigue was made by comparing the fatigue properties of specimens with coatings to those without.
