Measuring the Density, Viscosity, and Surface Tension of Molten Titanates Using Electrostatic Levitation in Microgravity

Rare earth and barium titanates are useful as ferroelectric, dielectric, and optical materials. Measurements of their thermophysical properties in the liquid state can help guide melt processing technologies for their manufacture and advance understanding of fragile liquids' behavior and glass formation. Here, we report the density, thermal expansion, viscosity, and surface tension of molten BaTiNsub>2 O 5 , BaTi 4 O 9 , and 83TiO 2 -17RE 2 O 3 (RE = La or Nd). Measurements were made using electrostatic levitation and droplet oscillation techniques in microgravity, which provide access to quiescent liquid droplets and deep supercooling of 510–815 K below the equilibrium melting points. Densities were measured over 900–2400 K. Viscosities were similar for all four compositions, increasing from ∼10 mPa s near 2100 K to ∼30 mPa s near 1750 K. Surface tensions were 450–490 dyn cm −1 for the rare earth titanates and 383–395 dyn cm−1 for the barium titanates; surface tensions of all compositions had small or negligible temperature dependence over 1700–2200 K. For solids recovered after melt quenching, x-ray microtomography revealed the fracture mechanics in crystalline products and minimal internal porosity in glass products, likely arising from entrapped gas bubbles. Internal microstructures were generally similar for products processed either in microgravity or in a terrestrial aerodynamic levitator.

Evaluation of Topology Optimization to Achieve Energy Savings at the Urban District Level: Preprint

Advanced district thermal energy systems have the potential to achieve significant energy savings and facilitate the integration of renewable thermal resources and waste heat, contributing to reductions in carbon emissions. Such systems, also known as fifth generation district heating and cooling (5GDHC) systems, circulate water at temperatures close to ambient, and leverage electrically-driven water-source heat pumps located at connected buildings to further temper the water. However, barriers exist to the adoption of 5GDHC systems, including the factorial growth in potential network configurations as a function of the number of considered buildings. Topology optimization, which seeks to answer the questions, “Which is the best subset of buildings, if any, to connect to a district thermal energy system, and by what network should they be connected, to minimize life cycle cost?” can accelerate the adoption of 5GDHC systems. This study is part of an effort to develop a topology optimization framework for district thermal energy systems. In this study, a heuristic for one aspect of the topology optimization problem---the use of the minimal spanning tree network to connect a given set of buildings at the least life cycle cost---is validated.

Grid Value Investigation of Medium-Voltage Back-to-Back Converters: Preprint

This paper presents the work which investigates the value that the medium voltage back to back (MVB2B) converter can bring to the grid, through two potential applications: voltage regulation powered by the reactive power adjustment function, and the distributed energy resource (DER) adoption enhancement powered by the quantitative power transfer function. Two groups of distribution systems have been prepared for the value investigation, including IEEE 123-bus system for voltage regulation study and two utility provided realistic distribution systems for DER adoption enhancement study. The analysis results have demonstrated that the MVB2B converter can bring significant value to the grid through the two aforementioned applications. Particularly, with MVB2B converter transferring power between two feeders, a substantial amount of backfeeding solar power can be avoided, and the size of the energy storage which is used to store the extra solar power can be significantly reduced.

Evaluation of Low-Pressure-Sintered Multi-Layer Substrates for Medium-Voltage SiC Power Modules: Preprint

Direct-bonded aluminum (DBA) multi-layer substrates have been fabricated using low-pressure silver sintering. These multi-layer substrates can be used to reduce the peak electric field strength inside power modules. This benefit is particularly important for medium-voltage silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs due to their higher operating voltages. The voiding content and defect density of the bond used to create the multi-layer substrate stackup is critical to the thermal performance and reliability of the power module. This work two low-pressure-assisted sintering techniques; one using nano-silver preform and the other using nano-silver paste to bond 23 mm by 49 mm DBA substrates. Scanning acoustic microscopy (C-SAM) is used to evaluate the bond quality after sintering. To evaluate the reliability of the sintered multi-layer substrates, passive thermal cycling from –40 °C to 200 °C was performed. Cross-sections were cut at pre-determined intervals and imaged with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). After 1,000 thermal cycles, minor cracking was observed, but no failures have occurred.

One of These Things IS Like the Other: Pursuing a New Taxonomy of Industry for Improved Energy System Modeling

Industrial processes drive the exchange of materials, energy, and currency throughout the economy. These processes are powered by electricity and direct combustion, with variation in their operation even within the same industry. This heterogeneity makes it difficult for large models, including the National Energy Modeling System (US), to project their energy use while remaining tractable. Decarbonization and ensuing changes to the energy system require changes to industrial processes while offering opportunities for process innovation, but the extent and nature of changes are difficult to model with current classification schemes and corresponding data. The North American Industrial Classification (NAICS) is an economic taxonomy of industries, but its categories are less meaningful from an energy and material flow perspective. For example, a facility that makes steel from iron ore in a blast furnace/basic oxygen furnace is categorized under the same NAICS code as a facility that makes steel from scrap in an electric arc furnace despite the scale, use of recycled scrap versus iron ore, and energy use differences in the two facility types. Exploratory analysis is performed on a large dataset used for plant-level energy assessment in order to detect clusters that can aid in better modeling of industry for energy analysis in an evolving system with breakthrough technologies.

Exploring Social Dynamics of Hard-Disk Drives Circularity with an Agent-Based Approach: Preprint

By 2025, it is estimated that installed data storage in the US will be 2.2 Zettabytes, generating about 50 million units of end-of-life hard-disk drives (HDDs) per year. The circular economy tackles waste issues by maximizing value retention in the economy, for instance, through reuse and recycling. However, the reuse of hard disk drives is hindered by the lack of trust organizations have toward other means of data removal than physically destroying HDDs. Here, an agent-based approach explores how organizations’ decisions to adopt other data removal means affect HDDs circularity. The model applies the theory of planned behaviour to model the decisions of HDDs end-users. Results demonstrate that the attitude (which is affected by trust) of end-users toward data-wiping technologies acts as a barrier to reuse. Moreover, social pressure can play a significant role as organizations that adopt CE behaviours can set an example for others.

A Primer on Using Analysis to Guide Plastic Circularity

BOTTLE, funded by DOE's Advanced Materials & Manufacturing Technologies Office and Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO), conducts analysis-guided R&D to change the way we recycle plastics. But what does analysis really mean? In this webinar, BOTTLE Analysis Co-Lead Dr. Taylor Uekert, a researcher with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), will introduce key analysis techniques such as techno-economic analysis, life cycle assessment, and environmental justice evaluation. Relevant to both analysts and non-analysts, Dr. Uekert will cover the basics of analysis techniques and discuss how these methods are conducted and interpreted. She will provide examples from the BOTTLE portfolio demonstrating their use in benchmarking and optimizing the costs and environmental impacts of new innovations in plastic redesign and recycling. If you are working in the plastics recycling field - from experimental work to analysis to community-focused projects - you won't want to miss this talk. The webinar will end with a Q&A session.
