Analysis of heat transfer characteristics of venting cryogen tank - Vol. 3
Feasibility of using elastic deformation to predict heat transfer rates across joined smooth-metal surfaces under high vacuum conditions and light loads
Development of polymers with improved heat transfer coefficients for use in encapsulating electronic modules is discussed. Chemical reactions for synthesizing the polymers are described and thermodynamic and physical properties are analyzed.

Investigation of the influence of resonant multipole interactions on exchanges of rotational energy in molecular collisions, by means of a simple two-state impact-parameter approximation. It is found that dipole-quadrupole and quadrupole-quadrupole interactions can have a significant effect for molecules with low moments of inertia.

Lunar surface brightness temperatures derived as part of the Apollo 17 heat flow experiment are reported. Nighttime surface temperatures, calculated from the data provided by two thermocouples suspended about 15 cm above the lunar surface, are used to determine the conductivity profile of the upper 15 cm of regolith at the ALSEP site. The surface reaches a maximum temperature of 384 (plus or minus 6) K at lunar noon and cools to a minimum temperature of 102 (plus or minus 1.5 K) at the end of the lunar night. Conductivities of the order of .000015 W/cm-deg K are postulated for a 2-cm porous surface layer overlying more compact regolith material with conductivities in the range of .0001 to .00015 W/cm-deg K between 2 and 15 cm. A mean surface temperature of 216 (plus or minus 5) K is deduced from the thermocouple data. The 256 K temperature measured by the probe sensors at 130 cm thus indicates that a large mean temperature gradient exists at the Apollo 17 site.

The materials studied are described along with the apparatus and the experimental techniques employed. The results of the measurements involving two REI Silica materials and a Mod 1 B REI Mullite are listed in a table. Measurements were conducted at unusually high temperature differences to detect 'shine-through' radiation transparency. Photographs are presented of the high-temperature guarded hot plate assembly.
A simple analytical form of induced anisotropy of heat conductivity of initially isotropic polymer solids results from employing the simplified theory of the three-chain model of the non-Gaussian network. The analytical form appears to be valid up to a stretch ratio of 2.65, which is the limit of existing experimental data. The effect of induced anisotropy on the temperature distribution, due to the large deformations, is illustrated for a highly expanded spherical shell and a cylindrical tube under a steady-state heat flow using the derived analytical form of the strain-dependent heat conductivity.

Ge film that replaces SiO2 coating in method of fabricating room-temperature CW laser diodes achieves greater heat dissipation while maintaining effectiveness as current-confining medium. Film also lessens certain unwanted strain parameters and ultimately increases lifetime of lasers. Method is applicable to fabrication of InP and (AlGa)As CW lasers.
