CAG Cold QCD Final Report

For many years, the Texas A&M group led by Dr. Carl Gagliardi has played major roles in STAR investigations of spin phenomena in polarized pp collisions at RHIC, with a particular focus on spin asymmetries involving jet and hadron-in-jet production. The group has also made very significant administrative, service, and leadership contributions to STAR. Dr. Gagliardi retired at the end of the Fall 2023 semester, so his efforts going forward will be on a smaller scale and unfunded. This final scientific/technical report provides a brief summary of the group’s accomplishments during the past three years, with a particular focus on activities since the most recent progress report was submitted in Fall, 2022.

Progress Report on Model Development for Aerosol Transport through Divergent Cracks Paths

This report summarizes the progress in developing a phenomenological model of aerosol transport, deposition, and plugging through microchannels. The purpose of this effort is to introduce to a user community—involving researchers, regulators, and industry—a generic, reliable numerical model for the prediction of aerosol transport while accounting for potential deposition and plugging of the leak paths to model spent nuclear fuel (SNF) release from postulated Stress Corrosion Cracks in canisters under storage or transportation. Current work focuses on expanding the model to predict aerosol (and gas) flow through complex microchannel (nozzle) geometries in addition to the rectangular and cylindrical geometries, as we approach more realistic Stress Corrosion Crack conditions. In this regard, a divergent nozzle geometry, used at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) for testing aerosol release and retention (Durbin et al. 2021), was added to the model. The model was then validated with blowdown data for the particular microchannel, from experiments conducted at SNL. The report also presents preliminary non-benchmarked aerosol penetration fraction and mass flow rate for a monodisperse 10-micron (AED) particle concentration of 1.7e-08 kg/m 3 being released through the divergent microchannel geometry from the SNL’s aerosol experimental tank setup.Future work will involve validating the aerosol model and updating the model’s Graphical User Interface (GUI) to include the divergent nozzle geometry. This is expected to help stakeholders perform quick and easy first principles calculations without needing to understand the underlying MATLAB script.

Report on technical development in ANL for innovative creep testing and measurement

This report summarizes a research effort undertaken by Argonne National Laboratory to accelerate the development of creep data package for ASME code qualification. Progress on the fabrication of a 3-sample load train and the application of a direct current potential drop (DCPD) technique to measure large creep strains are reported. Specifically: (1) The 3-sample load train, with three sets of Linear Variable Differential Transformers (LVDT), has been fabricated and assembled. (2) A DCPD method for creep-strain measurement up to 50% has been demonstrated. The DCPD data matches very well to LVDT results, suggesting its potential application in future creep testing. The technical developments contribute towards shortening the time needed to generate a creep data package for an ASME code case of the laser powder bed fusion 316H stainless steel, an effort under the US Department of Energy’s Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies (AMMT) program.

LAMP DTL Scoping Studies (Technical Report)

The present studies are based on the preliminary design efforts, and on the Scoping Studies of the “Strawman” design of LAMP front-end upgrade, referred in the text below to as “Feb.2024 Iteration”, presented in. The main accomplishment of present studies was substantial increase of the fidelity of the beam dynamics simulations in the proposed drift tube linac (DTL). The main accent was on development of the methodology for calculation of the longitudinal (synchrotron) and transverse (betatron) oscillations frequencies (phase advance per focusing period) values and providing the accelerating structure focusing lattice that has safe parameters of such oscillations to avoid unwanted emittance growth and possible beam halo formation. The resulting values of the oscillations phase advances are presented in Table 1, and in Figure 5 in the main body of the report. Special efforts were made to achieve the RF power consumption within limits of the existing RF power system and make sure that DTL fits in the existing tunnel. The LAMP scope does not suggest any additional building and/or tunnel construction. Table 1 summarizes some of these results, as well as Table 3 in the main body of the report.

Clean Energy Cybersecurity Accelerator: Cohort 2 - runZero Public Report

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER) sponsors the Clean Energy Cybersecurity Accelerator™ (CECA) to expedite the deployment of emerging security technologies that address the most urgent security concerns facing modern and future electric grids. CECA Cohort 2 assessed solutions focused on hidden risks due to incomplete system visibility and device security and configuration. Improving visibility can be achieved through operational technology (OT) asset identification solutions, including capabilities like automatic discovery, vulnerability reporting, and configuration monitoring. Solutions that monitor and identify assets in information technology (IT) networks in other domains are widely used; however, there is far less adoption of monitoring solutions for operational technology environments. Wider adoption may increase with increased confidence in the ability for these solutions to understand and respond to the specific requirements of OT environments. CECA Cohort 2 evaluated the active and passive asset discovery capabilities of market-ready solutions, documented and analyzed results, and identified gaps in functionality or capabilities. This report and describes how these results can help advance the adoption of these and similar solutions in the electric sector.
