Training Airline Pilots for Improved Flight Path Monitoring: The Sensemaking Model Framework

The importance and benefit of improved monitoring is increasingly recognized. Improved training may be a valuable intervention. Our study (conducted 2019) assessed and trained airline First Officers on flight path monitoring skills. The exploratory study assessed monitoring pre-training in a simulator session that included monitoring challenges (8 or 7 events). A 1-hour interactive training followed, based on the Sensemaking Model of Monitoring; it presented concepts and examples using a slide deck, discussion, and simple activities. Post-training assessment used scenarios with analogous monitoring challenges (7 or 8 events) but a different setting. Performance showed significant and relatively consistent improvement. Training monitoring as sensemaking merits further investigation.

Paths of Partial Coherence: Jim Wyant’s Influence on my Profession Career

Writing a tribute paper is fraught with peril. While it is supposed to be about the other’s impact upon your life, in really it cannot help but be all about the author. Back in 2012, after my initial reluctance, the paper I wrote for the Bill Wolfe tribute[1]was so cathartic, that I had to write one for Jim Wyant–to add a chapter to my story, to explain how a path of successes and failures have lead me to the present, and in the process to exorcise more ghosts from my subconscious. While our relationship is complicated, it has always been respectful. In many regards, Jim Wyant may be one of the most important people helping me reach my potential. I am NOT ‘A’ Wyant Student. I am ‘a’ Wyant student. I took three classes from Jim: Interference and Diffraction, Holography and Optical Testing. As a result of those classes, I found something that I loved, something at which I was good, something that became apart of me–I found my technical bliss. And beyond the classroom, my professional career has been inescapably connected with Jim Wyant.

Path-Adaptive Guidance Algorithm Trades for a Two-Stage Lunar Descent Vehicle

For the next generation of NASA’s missions, explicit, path-adaptive descent guidance algorithms must provide the stability and customizability required for a safe and efficient descent to the lunar surface, while also meeting program and vehicle constraints. Several descent algorithms have been flown and tested for single-stage landers through the Apollo and Altair programs, but thus far little analysis has been conducted involving the application of these algorithms to a two-stage descent vehicle. Due to payload mass and fairing constraints of the existing fleet of launch vehicles, multi-stage descent architectures are a unique option for achieving the greatest possible mass to lunar surface. This paper seeks to compare the performance of guidance configurations of a lunar lander system consisting of two stages, one of which separates partway through descent. Through development of this paper, an optimization suite has been written that is specifically designed for optimizing planetary non-atmospheric two-stage descent trajectories, and is used as a baseline to compare the guidance algorithms tested. Time-to-go computational methods and ignition logic routines that may be employed in a lunar environment are also discussed. Preliminary results are presented that show relative performance metrics for a range of different guidance algorithm configurations.

Calculation of Transformer Leakage Inductance by Simplified Flux Path Geometries

Series inductance is a critical energy storage element in isolated power converters. Many have explored methods of estimating the total leakage inductance of transformers as an integrated series inductance without external inductors. However, this poses challenges with medium frequency converters and magnetic ribbon-based cores, e.g., metal amorphous nanocrystalline. The material’s relatively high conductivity allows eddy currents to develop when magnetic flux intersects wide surfaces. These eddy currents result in significant additional losses that increase with increasing power flow. This paper presents a simplified and accurate method of estimating leakage flux while identifying separate leakage flux paths that correlate with the magnetic material surfaces. This enables an understanding the proportion of leakage flux that will contribute to extra losses. The methods presented are applicable to both leakage and fringing (around heterogeneous material interfaces) fluxes. This paper includes detailed FEA studies and 3D flux vector measurements matching the presented analytical models.

Correction of Path Integrated Attenuation Estimates Considering the Soil Moisture Effect for the Gpm Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar

Spaceborne precipitation radars, including the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission’s Precipitation Radar (PR) and the Global Precipitation Measurement Mission’s Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR), measure not only precipitation echoes but surface echoes as well, the latter of which are used to estimate the path-integrated attenuation (PIA) in the surface reference technique (SRT). In our previous study based on analyzing PR measurements, we found that attenuation-free surface backscattering cross sections (denoted by s0e) over land increased in the presence of precipitation. This behavior, called the soil moisture effect, causes an underestimate of the PIA by the SRT as the method does not explicitly consider this effect. In this study, measurements made by Ku-band Precipitation Radar (KuPR) and Ka-band Precipitation Radar (KaPR), which comprise the DPR, were analyzed to examine whether KuPR and KaPR exhibit similar dependencies on the soil moisture as does the PR. For both KuPR and KaPR, an increase in s0e was observed for a large portion of the land area, except for forests and deserts. Results from the Hitschfeld–Bordan (HB) method suggest that s0e increases with the surface precipitation rate for light precipitation events. Meanwhile, for heavy precipitation, owing to the degradation of the HB method, it is difficult to estimate s0e quantitatively. Thus, a correction method for PIA that considers the soil moisture effect was developed and implemented into the DPR standard algorithm. With this correction, the surface precipitation rate estimates increased by approximately 18%for KuPR and 15%for the normal scan of KaPR over land.

Path-Adaptive Guidance Algorithm Trades for a Two-Stage Lunar Descent Vehicle

For the next generation of NASA’s missions, the necessity for path-adaptive guidance algorithms has become clear in order to provide the stability and customizability required for a safe and efficient descent to the lunar surface, while meeting specified program and vehicle constraints. Several descent algorithms have been tested and flown for single-stage landers through the Apollo and Altair programs, but thus far little analysis has been conducted involving the application of these algorithms for a two-stage descent vehicle. Due to the limited payload mass constraints of the existing fleet of launch vehicles, multi-stage descent architectures have become a viable course of action. This paper seeks to compare the performance of guidance configurations for a lunar lander system consisting of two stages, one of which separates partway through descent. Through development of this paper, an optimization suite has been written that is specifically designed for optimizing planetary non-atmospheric two-stage descent trajectories, and is used as a comparison baseline for the guidance algorithms tested. Time-to -go computational methods and ignition logic routines that may be employed in a lunar environment are also discussed. Further work is to be completed on trajectory design trades as well as the effects of modifying guidance targets in simulation based on trajectories that are optimized for different performance indices.

Battery State-of-Health Aware Path Planning for a Mars Rover

A rover mission consists of visiting waypoints to gather scientific samples based on set requirements. However, rovers face operational uncertainties during the mission, affecting the performance of its electrical and mechanical components and overall mission success. Hence, it is critical to have a decision-making framework that is aware of the health state of the components when planning the path of the vehicle. In particular, battery degradation, and consequently the battery State of Health (SOH), can affect the optimality of decisions made by the autonomous system in the long term. This paper presents a decision-making system that incorporates information on the energy drawn from the battery (based on the vehicle’s velocity), terrain conditions, and model-based prognostic modules to assess the impact on the battery’s state of charge (SoC). The decision-making system was formulated as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) to reach the goal destination by sending commands in a determined amount of time while maintaining the battery SoC within the policy stated. The MDP problem was programmed using the open-source framework POMDPs.jl, which has a variety of online and offline solvers. To solve the MDP problem online, we used Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS). Results from simulations demonstrate the effect that battery degradation and charging plans have on decision-making.

A Unifying View of Estimation and Control Using Belief Propagation With Application to Path Planning

The use of estimation techniques on stochastic models to solve control problems is an emerging paradigm that falls under the rubric of Active Inference (AI) and Control as Inference (CAI). In this work, we use probability propagation on factor graphs to show that various algorithms proposed in the literature can be seen as specific composition rules in a factor graph. We show how this unified approach, presented both in probability space and in log of the probability space, provides a very general framework that includes the Sum-product, the Max-product, Dynamic programming and mixed Reward/Entropy criteria-based algorithms. The framework also expands algorithmic design options that lead to new smoother or sharper policy distributions. We propose original recursions such as: a generalized Sum/Max-product algorithm, a Smooth Dynamic programming algorithm and a modified versions of the Reward/Entropy algorithm. The discussion is carried over with reference to a path planning problem where the recursions that arise from various cost functions, although they may appear similar in scope, bear noticeable differences. We provide a comprehensive table of composition rules and a comparison through simulations, first on a synthetic small grid with a single goal with obstacles, and then on a grid extrapolated from a real-world scene with multiple goals and a semantic map.

Conceptual Design and Validation of a Bent-Perforation-Path Acoustic Liner

An acoustic liner concept is developed that increases the effective thickness of perforate sheet holes by bending the perforation paths within the facesheet. This significantly increases both the viscous-loss resistance and mass reactance properties of the acoustic liner, creating low-frequency absorption utilizing a small amount of liner volume. An initial concept is designed, 3D-printed, and tested in a normal-incidence impedance tube to verify the acoustic properties. Comparisons to an impedance model are shown with good agreement to test data, although further work needs to be done to more accurately capture the losses associated with bends within the hole. Follow-on concepts are also discussed that attempt to address the current shortcomings of the initial design.

Deformable Mirror Technology Roadmap: Architecting A Path to TRL5 for Future Exoplanet Direct Imaging Space Missions

The Deformable Mirror Technology Roadmap (DMTR) is a working group tasked by NASA’s Exoplanet Program Office to study the path to bring deformable mirror (DM) systems to a Technology Readiness Level 5. DMs, and their drive electronics and harnessing, are the critical component of any exoplanet direct imaging coronagraph, and there is no device that exists today which can meet the ambitious performance goals expected for NASA’s Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO). Here we present progress on surveying the field of DM technologies, defining a first cut set of device requirements, and recommending a development and verification maturation program.

Development and Experimental Validation of a Path-Dependent Spin Forming Finite Element Model

Spin forming is an advanced manufacturing process widely used in the aerospace and defense sectors to produce lightweight, high-strength cylindrical components with tight dimensional tolerances. This study explores the applicability of the path-dependent Mechanical Threshold Stress (MTS) constitutive model by simulating the evolution of geometry, machining forces, and plastic deformation during the spin forming of a 10-mm thick 6061-O aluminum cylinder. While numerical modeling of spin forming has advanced substantially over the past decade, systematic verification and experimental validation of material models remain limited, particularly in predicting through-thickness process evolution. The MTS model, incorporating a Voce hardening rule, is employed for its ability to represent cyclic loading, rapidly varying temperature fields, and strain rates characteristic of spin forming. Numerical convergence analysis indicates discretization uncertainties between 0.3% and 9.2% for key quantities of interest. Experimental validation demonstrates that the MTS model, when implemented with a verified mesh, accurately reproduces both elastic and plastic behavior of 6061-O aluminum, predicting peak roller loads within 11–18% of measurements, geometric tolerances within 3%, and plastic strain distributions within 10% of experimental values. Collectively, these results establish a validated computational framework for predictive spin-forming simulations with quantified confidence, providing a foundation for extension to other alloys, geometries, and forming conditions.

Path-synchronous performance monitoring of interconnection networks based on source code attribution

Examples disclosed herein relate to path-synchronous performance monitoring of an interconnection network based on source code attribution. A processing node in the interconnection network has a profiler module to select a network transaction to be monitored, determine a source code attribution associated with the network transaction to be monitored, and issue a network command to execute the network transaction to be monitored. A logger module creates, in a buffer, a node temporal log associated with the network transaction and the network command. A drainer module periodically captures the node temporal log. The processing node has a network interface controller to receive the network command and mark a packet generated for the network command to be temporally tracked and attributed back to the source code attribution at each hop of the interconnection network traversed by the marked packet.

Scalable All-pairs Shortest Paths for Huge Graphs on Multi-GPU Clusters

We present an optimized Floyd-Warshall (Floyd-Warshall) algorithm that computes the All-pairs shortest path (APSP) for GPU accelerated clusters. The Floyd-Warshall algorithm due to its structural similarities to matrix-multiplication is well suited for highly parallel GPU architectures. To achieve high parallel efficiency, we address two key algorithmic challenges: reducing high communication overhead and addressing limited GPU memory. To reduce high communication costs, we redesign the parallel (a) to expose more parallelism, (b) aggressively overlap communication and computation with pipelined and asynchronous scheduling of operations, and (c) tailored MPI-collective. To cope with limited GPU memory, we employ an offload model, where the data resides on the host and is transferred to GPU on-demand. The proposed optimizations are supported with detailed performance models for tuning. Our optimized parallel Floyd-Warshall implementation is up to 5x faster than a strong baseline and achieves 8.1 PetaFLOPS/sec on 256~nodes of the Summit supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This performance represents 70% of the theoretical peak and 80% parallel efficiency. The offload algorithm can handle 2.5x larger graphs with a 20% increase in overall running time.

Path Forward: Materials Data Modernization for ASME Codes and Standards in the Artificial Intelligence Era

Development of the ASME Materials Properties Database was initiated in the early 2010s to support the ASME Codes and Standards. As information technologies advance at an accelerated pace with the artificial intelligence era on the horizon, the ASME Materials Properties Database must be further modernized from a database to a knowledgebase to ride the wave of digital information revolution and effectively support the ASME Codes and Standards in the new era. This paper is intended to provide an overview of the ASME Materials Properties Database and discuss a roadmap for its future development to facilitate understanding of and participation from different sectors of the Codes and Standards community. It first reviews the basic concepts of data, information, knowledge, database, and database system; as well as the pros and cons in different types of data management, and then discusses the path forward for a desired evolution of the database into a self-explanatory and machine-readable knowledgebase that is consistent with human cognitive processes for the Codes and Standards development and furthermore provides resources for data processing and analysis to reach an eventual goal of streamlining the Codes and Standards development from the initial inquiry, throughout data submission, analysis, …, to Codes and Standards rule establishment for final publication.

Graphics processor unit with opportunistic inter-path reconvergence

A graphics processing unit and methods for comping and executing instructions with opportunistic inter-path reconvergence are provided. A graphics processing unit may access computer executable instructions mapped to code blocks of a control flow for a warp. The code blocks may include an immediate dominator block and an intermediate post dominator block. The graphics processing unit may store a first thread mask associated with the first code block. The first thread mask may include a plurality of bits indicative of the active or non-active status for the threads of the warp, respectively. The graphics processing unit may a second thread mask corresponding to an intermediate code block between the immediate dominator block and intermediate post dominator block. The graphics processing unit may execute, with threads indicated as active by the first thread mask, instructions of the intermediate code block with a first operand or a second operand depending on the second thread mask.
