Electro-expulsive separation system

An electro-expulsive system has one or more overlapped conductors, each comprising a flexible ribbon conductor, which is folded back on itself. The conductors are embedded in an elastomeric material. Large current pulses are fed to the conductors from power storage units. As a result of the antiparallel currents, the opposed segments of a conductor are forcefully separated and the elastomeric material is distended. Voids in the elastomer aid the separation of the conductor segments. The distention is almost instantaneous when a current pulse reaches the conductor and the distention tends to remove any solid body on the surface of the elastomeric material.

Investigation of plasma contactors for use with orbiting wires

The proposed Shuttle-based short tether experiments with hollow cathodes have the potential for providing important data that will not be obtained in long tether experiments. A critical property for hollow cathode effectiveness as a plasma contactor is the cross magnetic field conductivity of the emitted plasma. The different effects of hollow cathode cloud overlap in the cases of motion-driven and battery-driven operation are emphasized. The calculations presented on the size and shape of the hollow cathode cloud improve the qualitative picture of hollow cathodes in low Earth orbit and provide estimates of time constants for establishing the fully-expanded cloud. The magnetic boundary value problem calculations indicate the way in which the magnetic field will effect the shape of the cloud by resisting expansion in the direction perpendicular to the field. The large-scale interactions of the system were also considered. It was concluded that recent plasma chamber experiments by Stenzel and Urrutia do not model an electrodynamic tether well enough to apply the results to tethered system behavior. Orbiting short tether experiments on hollow cathodes will provide critical information on hollow cathode performance and the underlying physics that cannot be obtained any other way. Experiments should be conducted as soon as funding and a suitable space vehicle are available.

The ultraviolet spectrum of Procyon. I - The atlas from 2030 to 2371 A

The high-resolution ultraviolet spectrum of Procyon (F5 IV-V) in the range 2030-2371 A is analyzed by using BUSS VIII and IUE data. A detailed identification is performed with the synthetic spectrum method. The theoretical spectrum has been computed with a Kurucz blanketed model, and using an extended and updated version of the Kurucz and Peytremann log gf tables. The convolution of the computed spectrum with a Gaussian broadening function shows that the observations are well reproduced with a total broadening velocity (stellar plus instrumental) of 10.8 km/s. An atlas of the spectrum observed by BUSS VIII is given. The IUE and BUSS VIII observations are compared with each other, and the overlapping spectra are displayed. An estimate of the quality of the line list, of the atomic data, and of the abundances used for the computations has been derived. Elements predicted as being present in the region studied, but not observed in the visual range, are discussed.

Evidence for the existence of additional small satellites of Saturn

Voyager-1 and 2 long exposure images were studied in a search for previously undiscovered satellites in the Saturn system. The technique used was to overlap the images with common view areas, thereby including increasingly higher-resolution images of nearby exposures with those taken at greater distances during approach. No definite identifications were made of new satellites. However, five objects were apparently detected by the survey and the orbits associated with each of the recorded photographic 'streaks' were calculated. Techniques are discussed for applying the Space Telescope to confirm or disprove the satellite status of the observed objects.

Far-ultraviolet fluorescence of carbon monoxide in the red giant Arcturus. II - Analysis of high-dispersion IUE spectra

Faint, diffuse emissions near 1380 A in deeply exposed IUE spectrograms of the red giant Arcturus very likely are associated with bands of the A-X fourth-positive system of carbon monoxide, fluoresced by multiplet UV2 of neutral oxygen near 1305 A. Numerical simulations indicate that the strength of the CO bands is exceedingly sensitive, in the best available one-dimensional model of the chromosphere of Arcturus, to a delicate balance between the rapid inward attenuation of the oxygen radiation field and the rapid outward decline of the molecular absorptivity. The fortuitous character of the overlap region in the single-component model argues that one should also consider the possibility that the pumping occurs in a highly inhomogeneous chromosphere, of the type proposed in previous studies of Arcturus based on observations of the infrared absorption bands of CO.

Analytic evaluation of two-center molecular integrals

By using the Fourier-transform technique, the explicit expressions for the one-electron - two-center overlap integrals of Slater-type atomic orbitals up to 3d are derived. The final expressions are analytic, simple, and independent of local coordinates. Furthermore, they do not contain the nonclosed-form of exponential integrals which were presented in expressions given in earlier work. It is shown that the two-electron - two-center Coulomb integrals, as well as the hybrid integrals, can simply be expressed in terms of these integrals. The numerical instability arising from the situation in which the exponents of the two orbitals are almost equal is discussed, and a solution for this problem based on a Taylor-series expansion of the integral is suggested.

An evolution of antiparallel merging

It has been suggested (Crooker, 1979) that the geomagnetic field and the merge at the dayside magnetopause along lines formed by the loci of points where the fields are antiparallel. These antiparallel merging lines curve outward from the cusps, one in each hemisphere. Here a three-dimensional magnetopause model in which the antiparallel merging lines become chains of neutral points is described. The model is constructed by overlapping shielding currents of the geomagnetic field and the IMF in a layer of finite thickness. The global topology of the model explains the observed disappearance of flux-transfer events when the IMF turns northward and the dearth of flux-transfer events in the subsolar region.

Flow energizer flight tests on a light twin aircraft

Experiments were conducted to explore the use of flow energizers (i.e., horizontally mounted vortex generators), using a special instrumentation subsystem installed on a light twin aircraft. The data, collected for energizer configurations with convergence ratios of 1.2, 1.5, and 1.7, included measurements of pressure on the wing surface, velocity components in the wake of the energizer, and forces on the flow energizer itself. Surface pressure data showed that flow energizer effects are highly localized. The energizer with the smallest convergence ratio tested produced an energizer lift/drag ratio about 75 percent lower that that of the other two configurations. For highly swept planforms, cambered energizers with overlaps of the order of 12-15 percent of the local chord provide the best results.

Constructing a coherent long-term global total ozone climatology from the BUV, MFR, and SBUV/TOMS data sets

Multichannel Filter Radiometer (MFR) data are intercompared with Solar Backscattered Ultraviolet (SBUV) and Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) data during a five-month period of their data overlap in order to determine the usefulness of MFR data to represent the SBUV/TOMS and backscatter ultraviolet spectrometer data during their data gap period. Total ozone differences found were latitudinally and monthly dependent. Average differences between the TOMS and the MFR ozone data vary from -12.4 to +13.3 percent, with differences in the tropical to middle latitudes generally between + or - 4 percent. Biases between the data sets can be removed for certain latitude zones by applying an appropriate algorithm to the MFR ozone data.

Lunar and Venusian radar bright rings

Twenty-one lunar craters have radar bright ring appearances which are analogous to eleven complete ring features in the earth-based 12.5 cm observations of Venus. Radar ring diameters and widths for the lunar and Venusian features overlap for sizes from 45 to 100 km. Radar bright areas for the lunar craters are associated with the slopes of the inner and outer rim walls, while level crater floors and level ejecta fields beyond the raised portion of the rim have average radar backscatter. It is proposed that the radar bright areas of the Venusian rings are also associated with the slopes on the rims of craters. The lunar craters have evolved to radar bright rings via mass wasting of crater rim walls and via post-impact flooding of crater floors. Aeolian deposits of fine-grained material on Venusian crater floors may produce radar scattering effects similar to lunar crater floor flooding. These Venusian aeolian deposits may preferentially cover blocky crater floors producing a radar bright ring appearance. It is proposed that the Venusian features with complete bright ring appearances and sizes less than 100 km are impact craters. They have the same sizes as lunar craters and could have evolved to radar bright rings via analogous surface processes.

The intercomparison of ozone measured from the SME and Nimbus-7 satellites on short and long time scales

The spatial and temporal characteristics of ozone density measured from the SBUV (Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet) spectrometer on Nimbus-7 and the UV and the UV and the IR spectrometers on SME (Solar Mesosphere Explorer) are compared in the altitude region near 50 km where the three data sets overlap. Their temporal characteristics, when averaged over the same longitude range, are remarkably similar with respect to seasonal variations and short term fluctuations induced by transient planetary waves. The long term trends in the three data sets, however, differ significantly with each other. Over the three year period after 1982 ozone mixing ratio at 1 mb decreased by about 10 percent based on SEUV measurements but increased by 12 and 30 percent respectively based on SME-IR and SME-UV measurements. None of these estimates are consistent with the predicted decrease of about 2 percent based on solar UV flux and temperature changes during this period.

A coupled-mode theory for multiwaveguide systems satisfying the reciprocity theorem and power conservation

Two sets of coupled-mode equations for multiwaveguide systems are derived using a generalized reciprocity relation; one set for a lossless system, and the other for a general lossy or lossless system. The second set of equations also reduces to those of the first set in the lossless case under the condition that the transverse field components are chosen to be real. Analytical relations between the coupling coefficients are shown and applied to the coupling of mode equations. It is shown analytically that these results satisfy exactly both the reciprocity theorem and power conservation. New orthogonal relations between the supermodes are derived in matrix form, with the overlap integrals taken into account.

A fast radiation parameterization for atmospheric circulation models

Several currently available broadband parameterizations for longwave and shortwave radiation have been combined to produce a computationally fast radiation parameterization that is well suited for atmospheric circulation models. The main features of the parameterization are the ability to include overlapping partly cloudy layers in the longwave, the use of a delta-Eddington technique to treat clouds in the shortwave, and a computational structure that is amenable to vectorization on supercomputers. Selected results of off-line one-dimensional computations using the code have been compared with more rigorous methods as part of an international intercomparison program and found to be quite accurate.

Compact molecular gas structure in the interacting galaxy pair Arp 299 (IC 694-NGC 3690)

High-resolution (about 5-arcsec) CO observations of the interacting galaxy pair Arp 299 (IC 694-NGC 3690) show that about 40 percent of the total molecular gas content is concentrated in two compact regions each of mass 1.4 x 10 to the 9th solar mass. One component lies at the nucleus of IC 694, while the other spans the region of overlap between the two galaxies. The properties of the latter component are consistent with its being a region of greatly enhanced star formation. However, the unusually high L(FIR)/M(H2) ration for IC 694, together with the presence of a flat-spectrum radio source, suggest that its remarkable luminosity may be largely produced by nonthermal processes.

Quaternions as astrometric plate constants

A new method for solving problems in relative astrometry is proposed. In it, the relationship between the measured quantities and the components of the position vector of a star is modeled using quaternions, in effect replacing the plate constants of a standard four-plate-constant solution with the four components of a quaternion. The method allows a direct solution for the position vectors of the stars, and hence for the equatorial coordinates. Distortions, magnitude, and color effects are readily incorporated into the formalism, and the method is directly applicable to overlapping-plate problems. The advantages of the method include the simplicity of the resulting equations, their freedom from singularities, and the fact that trigonometric functions and tangential point transformations are not needed to model the plate material. A global solution over the entire sky is possible.

A CO survey of the dark nebulae in Perseus, Taurus, and Auriga

A new SIS receiver with extremely low noise temperature, used on the Columbia 1.2-m telescope has permitted mapping CO rapidly with full sampling. Results are presented of a survey for which the angular resolution of the telescope was reduced to 0.5 deg, allowing the observations for the complete region of 750 square degrees to be finished within four months, while retaining sufficient resolution to see significant substructure. Most positions with emission are in the Taurus-Auriga dark nebulae, a cloud associated with IC 348 and NGC 1333, and a cloud associated with the California nebula (NGC 1499) and NGC 1579, which overlaps the northern Taurus-Auriga nebulae but is separated from them in velocity. Also seen were several small clouds at Galactic latitude -25 deg to -35 deg southwest of the Taurus clouds, and the L1558 and L1551 clouds in the south.

Windows in direct dissociative recombination cross sections

Model potential curves are used to show that large windows are present in direct dissociative-recombination cross sections from excited molecular-ion vibrational levels. The windows are due to the overlap of vibrational wave functions of the repulsive neutral states with the nodes of the ion vibrational wave function.

Nonuniform sampling techniques for antenna applications

A two-dimensional sampling technique, which can employ irregularly spaced samples (amplitude and phase) in order to generate the complete far-field patterns is presented. The technique implements a matrix inversion algorithm, which depends only on the nonuniform sampled data point locations and with no dependence on the actual field values at these points. A powerful simulation algorithm is presented to allow a real-life simulation of many reflector/feed configurations and to determine the usefulness of the nonuniform sampling technique for the copolar and cross-polar patterns. Additionally, an overlapped window concept and a generalized error simulation model are discussed to identify the stability of the technique for recovering the field data among the nonuniform sampled data. Numerical results are tailored for the pattern reconstruction of a 20-m offset reflector antenna operating at L-band. This reflector is planned to be used in a proposed measurement concept of large antenna aboard the Space Shuttle, whereby it would be almost impractical to accurately control the movement of the Shuttle with respect to the RF source in prescribed directions in order to generate uniform sampled points. Also, application of the nonuniform sampling technique to patterns obtained using near-field measured data is demonstrated. Finally, results of an actual far-field measurement are presented for the construction of patterns of a reflector antenna from a set of nonuniformly distributed measured amplitude and phase data.
