Scribe and Interface Modification for Stable Halide Perovskite Modules (CRADA Final Report)

This project provided funding to NREL/Tandem PV by EERE-SETO and has the goal of improving perovskite module stability by at least a factor of 2 without sacrificing initial efficiency. This will be demonstrated using 3"x3" minimodules and will be tested according to the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center (IEC) standards and demonstrated using outdoor testing. A CRADA was established between NREL and Tandem PV to address the goals for the funded effort.

Atomistic Simulations for Thermophysical Properties of Uranium-Containing Halide Molten Salts

Characterizing the thermophysical properties in both fuel and coolant salts are critical in modeling, developing, process optimizing and utilizing molten salt reactors (MSRs), as these properties directly relate to operation metrics and can inform on the selection of candidate salts. The demand for consistent, accurate and publicly available thermophysical property data has become more apparent in recent years as interests have increased from molten salt reactor developers. There are a number of challenges in experimentally measuring properties such as thermal conductivity, viscosity, density and heat capacity , which have led to sparse and often times conflicting data points or molten salts in general. Additionally, there are a number of hazards to consider when synthesizing, storing, using, treating and disposing of molten salts. With the advances in computational capabilities over the last 10 years, the use of atomistic simulations can be implemented to support these efforts. The primary objective of this work is characterize the thermophysical transport properties in a number of molten chloride salts, and in particular NaCl-UCl 3 using ab-initio molecular dynamic (AIMD) simulations. In this binary salt the UCl 3 acts as the primary fissile material and NaCl acts as a carrier salt due with its’ high solubility for actinides A number of studies on the thermophysical properties of NaCl-UCl 3 have been published but there is not a vast amount of viscosity data for this system. In 1975, Desyatnik, et al published a study reporting dynamic viscosities that were calculated from kinematic viscosity measurements, and using the coefficients provided the viscosity in a 70:30 NaCl:UCl 3 mixture is 2.29 cP and 2.88 for a 60:40 mixture. Termini et al. recently reported viscosities in the range of 2.75 – 3 cP for the 63:37 NaCl-UCl 3 mixture in the same temperature range using rolling ball viscosity measurements. Computational viscosity of a similar mixture (64:36) can be obtained from the work Andersson et al. using the reported diffusion coefficients, and the hydrodynamic radius from the pair-radial distribution functions (RDFs). Using Eq (1) (vida infra), the viscosity would be 2.50 cP at 1100K. This is not to say that these values are incorrect due to the varying reported values, but aims to highlight the necessity of this work. The data reported in this ongoing work are computations on a 64:36 mixture of NaCl-UCl 3 at 987K. This work is likely to be expanded into varying concentrations of this mixture along with the inclusion of other salt candidate mixtures.

The aluminum electrode in AlCl3-alkali-halide melts

Passivation phenomena were observed upon cathodic and anodic polarization of the Al electrode in AlCl3-KCl-NaCl melts between 100 and 160 C. They are caused by formation of a solid salt layer at the electrode surface resulting from concentration changes upon current flow. The anodic limiting currents increased with temperature and with decreasing AlCl3 content of the melt. Current voltage curves obtained on a rotating aluminum disk showed a linear relationship between the anodic limiting current and 1/sq root of 2 pi (rps). Upon cathodic polarization dentrite formation occurs at the Al electrode. The activation overvoltage in AlCl3-KCl-NaCl (57.5-12.5-20 mol%) was determined by galvanostatic current step methods. An apparent exchange current density of 270 mA/cm2 at 130 C and a double layer capacity of 40 plus or minus 10 microfarad/cm2 were measured.

Elastic properties of alpha quartz and the alkali halides based on an interatomic force model.

A two-body central-force atomic model can be used to describe accurately the elastic properties of alpha quartz if the nontetrahedral O:O forces are included. The strength of the Si:O interaction has little effect on the bulk modulus. The technique is sufficiently general to allow calculations of the elastic properties of a specified structure under arbitrary pressure from a complete description of the interatomic forces. The elastic constants for the NaCl structure and the CsCl structure are examined. Our model includes two-body, central, anion-anion, anion-cation, and electrostatic interactions.

Hydrogen halide cleaning of powder metallurgy nickel-20 chromium-3 thoria.

The Cr2O3 content of powder metallurgy nickel-20 chromium-3 thoria was reduced with atmospheres consisting of hydrogen plus hydrogen chloride (HCl) or hydrogen bromide (HBr). The nonthoria oxygen content or 'oxygen excess' was reduced from an initial amount of greater than 50,000 ppm to less than 100 ppm. Low temperatures were effective, but lowest oxygen levels were achieved with the highest cleaning temperature of 1200 C.

The aluminum electrode in AlCl3-alkali-halide melts.

The anodic limiting currents increased with temperature and with decreasing AlCl3 content of the melt. Current voltage curves obtained on a rotating aluminum disk showed a linear relationship between the anodic limiting current and omega to the minus 1/2 power. Upon cathodic polarization, dendrite formation occurs at the Al electrode. The activation overvoltage in AlCl3-KCl-NaCl was determined by galvanostatic current step methods. An apparent exchange current density of 270 mA/sq cm at 130 C and a double layer capacity of 40 plus or minus 10 microfarad/sq cm were measured.

Large Silver Halide Single Crystals as Charged Particle Track Detectors

The trajectory of the particle is made visible under a microscope by the accumulation of metallic silver at regions of the lattice damaged by the particle. This decoration of the particle track is accomplished by exposure of the crystal to light. The decoration of normally present lattice imperfections such as dislocations can be suppressed by the addition to the crystal of less than ten parts per million of a suitable polyvalent metal impurity. An account of some preliminary attempts to grow thin single crystals of AgCl is given also, and suggestions for a more refined technique are offered.
