Testing the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism with lepton flavor and number violating processes

The Froggatt-Nielsen (FN) mechanism offers an elegant explanation for the observed masses and mixings of Standard Model fermions. In this work, we systematically study FN models in the lepton sector, identifying a broad range of charge assignments (“textures”) that naturally yield viable masses and mixings for various neutrino mass generation mechanisms. Using these textures, we consider higher-dimensional operators consistent with a FN origin and find that natural realizations predict distinct patterns in lepton flavor- and number-violating observables. For Dirac and Majorana neutrinos, FN-related correlations can lead to detectable rates of charged lepton flavor violation at next-generation low-energy experiments. Majorana and type-I seesaw models predict measurable rates of neutrinoless double beta decay. Determination of inverted neutrino mass ordering would exclude the Dirac neutrino FN scenario. Only a small minority of purely leptonic FN models predict detectable flavor violation at future muon colliders, though it is possible that a combined analysis with the quark sector will reveal motivated signals. These findings highlight the power of the FN mechanism to link neutrino mass generation to testable leptonic observables, offering new pathways for the experimental exploration of lepton number and underscoring the importance of next-generation low-energy probes.

Quark spin and orbital angular momentum from proton generalized parton distributions

Here, we calculate the leading-twist helicity-dependent generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the proton at finite skewness in the Nambu–Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). From these (and previously calculated helicity-independent GPDs) we obtain the spin decomposition of the proton, including predictions for quark intrinsic spin and orbital angular momentum. The inclusion of multiple species of diquarks is found to have a significant effect on the flavor decomposition, and resolving the internal structure of these dynamical diquark correlations proves essential for the mechanical stability of the proton. At a scale of Q 2 = 4 GeV 2 we find that the up and down quarks carry an intrinsic spin and orbital angular momentum of S u = 0.534, S d = -0.214, L u = -0.189, and L d = 0.210 , whereas the gluons have a total angular momentum of J g = 0.151 . The down quark is therefore found to carry almost no total angular momentum due to cancellations between spin and orbital contributions. Comparisons are made between these spin decomposition results and lattice QCD calculations.

Quark flavor equilibration of the quark-gluon plasma

The early stage of a heavy-ion collision is marked by rapid entropy production and the transition from a gluon saturated initial condition to a plasma of quarks and gluons that evolves hydrodynamically. However, during the early times of the hydrodynamic evolution, the chemical composition of the QCD medium is still largely unknown. We present a study of quark chemical equilibration in the (Q)GP using a novel model of viscous hydrodynamic evolution in partial chemical equilibrium. Motivated by the success of gluon saturated initial condition models, we initialize the QCD medium as a completely gluon dominated state. Local quark production during the hydrodynamic phase is then simulated through the evolution of time-dependent fugacities for each independent quark flavor, with the timescales set as free parameters to compare different rates of equilibration. We present the results of complete heavy-ion collision simulations using this partial chemical equilibrium model, and show the effects on hadronic and electromagnetic observables. In particular, we show that the development of flow is sensitive to the equilibration timescale, providing an empirical way to probe the chemical equilibration of the QCD medium.

Sterile neutrino dark matter and leptogenesis in Left-Right Higgs Parity

The standard model Higgs quartic coupling vanishes at (10 9 – 10 13 ) GeV. We study SU(2) L × SU(2) R × U(1) B–L theories that incorporate the Higgs Parity mechanism, where this becomes the scale of Left-Right symmetry breaking, $v_R$. Furthermore, these theories solve the strong CP problem and predict three right-handed neutrinos. We introduce cosmologies where SU(2) R × U(1) B–L gauge interactions produce right-handed neutrinos via the freeze-out or freeze-in mechanisms. In both cases, we find the parameter space where the lightest right-handed neutrino is dark matter and the decay of a heavier one creates the baryon asymmetry of the universe via leptogenesis. A theory of flavor is constructed that naturally accounts for the lightness and stability of the right-handed neutrino dark matter, while maintaining sufficient baryon asymmetry. The dark matter abundance and successful natural leptogenesis require vR to be in the range (10 10 – 10 13 ) GeV for freeze-out, in remarkable agreement with the scale where the Higgs quartic coupling vanishes, whereas freeze-in requires $v_R$ ≳ 109 GeV. The allowed parameter space can be probed by the warmness of dark matter, precise determinations of the top quark mass and QCD coupling by future colliders and lattice computations, and measurement of the neutrino mass hierarchy.

Bootstrapping M-theory orbifolds

Abstract We analyze correlation functions of SU(k) × SU(2) F flavor currents in a family of three-dimensional$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 superconformal field theories, combining analytic bootstrap methods with input from supersymmetric localization. Via holographic duality, we extract gluon and graviton scattering amplitudes of M-theory on AdS 4 ×S 7 /ℤ k which contains a ℂ 2 /ℤ k orbifold singularity. From these results, we derive aspects of the effective description of M-theory on the orbifold singularity beyond its leading low energy limit. We also determine a threshold correction to the holographic correlator from the combined contribution of two-loop gluon and tree-level bulk graviton exchange.

Notes on the complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

We describe numerous properties of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model for complex fermions with N $\gg$ 1 flavors and a global U(1) charge. We provide a general definition of the charge in the ( G, Σ) formalism, and compute its universal relation to the infrared asymmetry of the Green function. The same relation is obtained by a renormalization theory. The conserved charge contributes a compact scalar field to the effective action, from which we derive the many-body density of states and extract the charge compressibility. We compute the latter via three distinct numerical methods and obtain consistent results. Finally, we present a two dimensional bulk picture with free Dirac fermions for the zero temperature entropy.

Cosmic perturbations from a rotating field

Complex scalar fields charged under approximate U(1) symmetries appear in well-motivated extensions of the Standard Model. One example is the field that contains the QCD axion field associated with the Peccei-Quinn symmetry; others include flat directions in supersymmetric theories with baryon, lepton, or flavor charges. These fields may take on large values and rotate in field space in the early universe. The relevant approximate U(1) symmetry ensures that the angular direction of the complex field is light during inflation and that the rotation is thermodynamically stable and is long-lived. These properties allow rotating complex scalar fields to naturally serve as curvatons and explain the observed perturbations of the universe. The scenario imprints non-Gaussianity in the curvature perturbations, likely at a level detectable in future large scale structure observations. The rotation can also explain the baryon asymmetry of the universe without producing excessive isocurvature perturbations.

Trigger-DAQ and Slow Controls Systems in the Mu2e Experiment

The muon campus program at Fermilab includes the Mu2e experiment that will search for a charged-lepton flavor violating processes where a negative muon converts into an electron in the field of an aluminum nucleus, improving by four orders of magnitude the search sensitivity reached so far. Mu2e's Trigger and Data Acquisition System (TDAQ) uses otsdaq as its solution. Developed at Fermilab, otsdaq uses the artdaq DAQ framework and art analysis framework, under the-hood, for event transfer, filtering, and processing. otsdaq is an online DAQ software suite with a focus on flexibility and scalability, while providing a multi-user, web-based, interface accessible through the Chrome or Firefox web browser. The detector Read Out Controller (ROC), from the tracker and calorimeter, stream out zero-suppressed data continuously to the Data Transfer Controller (DTC). Data is then read over the PCIe bus to a software filter algorithm that selects events which are finally combined with the data flux that comes froma Cosmic Ray Ve to System (CRV). A Detector Control System (DCS) for monitoring, controlling, alarming, and archiving has been developed using the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS) Open Source Platform. The DCS System has also been itegrated into otsdaq. The installation of the TDAQ and the DCS systems in the Mu2e building is planned for 2021-2022, and a prototype has been built at Fermilab's Feynman Computing Center. We report here on the developments and achievements of the integration of Mu2e's DCS system into the online otsdaq software.

Global analysis of $μ → e$ interactions in the SMEFT

We study current experimental bounds on charged lepton flavor violating (CLFV) μ – e interactions in the model-independent framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). Assuming a generic flavor structure in the quark sector, we consider the contributions of CLFV operators to low-energy observables, including μ → eγ and μ → e conversion for quark-flavor conserving operators and CLFV meson decays for quark-flavor violating operators. At high energy, we consider limits on CLFV decays of the Higgs and Z bosons and of the top quark, and obtain bounds on operators with light quarks by recasting searches for production of eμ pairs in pp collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We connect observables at low- and high-energy by taking into account renormalization group running and matching between CLFV operators. We also discuss the sensitivity of the future Electron-Ion Collider, where the prospective bounds are derived by imposing simple cuts on final state particles. We find that, in a single operator scenario, bounds on purely leptonic operators are dominated by μ → eγ and μ → e conversion. Semileptonic operators with down-type quarks are also dominantly constrained by low-energy observables, while LHC searches lead the bounds on up-type quark-flavor violating operators. Taking simplified multiple-coupling scenarios, we show that it is easy to evade the strongest low-energy bounds from spin-independent μ → e conversion, and that collider searches are competitive and complementary to constraints from spin-dependent μ → e conversion and other low-energy probes.

Small-𝑥 asymptotics of the leading-twist flavor-singlet quark TMDs

In this paper, we investigate the small-𝑥 behavior of the flavor-singlet, leading-twist quark transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs) using the light-cone operator treatment. This formalism allows us to express TMD operators at small 𝑥 in terms of polarized dipole amplitudes, enabling a systematic approach to their small-𝑥 evolution. We derive the evolution equations for these TMDs and solve them within the large-𝑁 𝑐 approximation under the linearized, double-logarithmic approximation, where 𝑁 𝑐 represents the number of quark colors. Expanding on previous work on unpolarized and helicity TMDs, we present the small-𝑥 asymptotics for a comprehensive set of TMDs, including the Sivers function, helicity worm-gear, transversity, pretzelosity, Boer-Mulders, and transversity worm-gear distributions. Our results provide a complete picture of the small-𝑥 asymptotic behavior for all leading-twist flavor-singlet quark TMDs. We also discuss the implications of our findings for phenomenological applications and outline potential avenues for further research, particularly in understanding nonlinear effects and extending beyond the double-logarithmic approximation and large-𝑁 𝑐 approximations.

Qu8its for quantum simulations of lattice quantum chromodynamics

We explore the utility of d = 8 qudits, qu8its, for quantum simulations of the dynamics of 1+1⁢D SU(3) lattice quantum chromodynamics, including a mapping for arbitrary number of flavors and lattice size and a reorganization of the Hamiltonian for efficient time evolution. Recent advances in parallel gate applications, along with the shorter application times of single-qudit operations compared with two-qudit operations, lead to significant projected advantages in quantum simulation fidelities and circuit depths using qu8its rather than qubits. The number of two-qudit entangling gates required for time evolution using qu8its is found to be more than a factor of 5 fewer than for qubits. Here, we anticipate that the developments presented in this work will enable improved quantum simulations to be performed using emerging quantum hardware.

A Search for Sterile Neutrino Dark Matter (Final Report)

Decades of dark matter searches with increasingly higher sensitivity have so far not been able to detect the most-favored hypothetical dark matter particles. This has increased interest in sterile neutrinos with masses in the kilo-electronvolt (keV) range as possible dark matter candidates. We have established a and new and world-leading approach to search for keV-scale sterile neutrinos with superconducting radiation detectors. For this, we have implanted radioactive beryllium-7 (Be-7) nuclei into our superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) detectors and measured the recoil energy of the lithium-7 (Li-7) daughter nucleus with high accuracy. If the associated electron neutrino wave function contains some admixture of a keV sterile flavor, the Li-7 recoil energy will be shifted and produce an additional peak in the spectrum whose energy depends on the sterile neutrino mass. While we have not observed any evidence for sterile neutrinos in these precision decay experiments, the experiment has increased the sensitivity of sterile neutrino searches by a factor of ~10 over competing approaches in the mass range from ~10 to ~800 keV. The next generation of STJ detectors that we have developed as part of this project will be able further increase the sensitivity of the sterile neutrino search by at least another two orders of magnitude.

Jet charge modification in dense QCD matter

In these proceedings we report a recent calculation of the jet charge modification in heavy-ion relative to proton collisions at the LHC. Jets have played an essential role in constraining theories of in-medium parton shower evolution and in determining the properties of the quark-gluon plasma created in ultra-relativistic nuclear reactions. It is important to extend these studies to flavor-tagged jets and explore observables that are sensitive to their partonic origin. The average jet charge, introduced early on in the history of quantum chromodynamics, is a proxy for the electric charge of the quark or gluon that initiates the jet. In the framework of soft-collinear effective theory, we show how to evaluate the jet charge in a dense strongly-interacting matter environments. We identify observables that can isolate the contribution of in-medium branching from isospin effects and present predictions for the transverse momentum dependence of the jet charge distribution in nucleus-nucleus collisions and its modification relative to the proton case.

Different flavors of exact-factorization-based mixed quantum-classical methods for multistate dynamics

Here, the exact factorization approach has led to the development of new mixed quantum-classical methods for simulating coupled electron–ion dynamics. We compare their performance for dynamics when more than two electronic states are occupied at a given time, and analyze: (1) the use of coupled versus auxiliary trajectories in evaluating the electron–nuclear correlation terms, (2) the approximation of using these terms within surface-hopping and Ehrenfest frameworks, and (3) the relevance of the exact conditions of zero population transfer away from nonadiabatic coupling regions and total energy conservation. Dynamics through the three-state conical intersection in the uracil radical cation as well as polaritonic models in one dimension are studied.

Mutually elusive: Vectorlike antileptons and leptoquarks

We study the properties of vectorlike fermions that have the same gauge charges as the Standard Model lepton doublets, but opposite lepton number. These antileptons undergo decays mediated by heavier scalar leptoquarks, while the symmetries of this renormalizable model protect the vectorlike fermions and the leptoquarks from standard decays probed so far at colliders. We derive upper limits on the new Yukawa couplings imposed by flavor-changing processes, including 𝐵 → 𝐾⁢$v\bar{v}$ and $𝐵_𝑠$ − $\bar{𝐵}_𝑠$ mixing, and show that they are compatible with prompt antilepton decays at the LHC for wide parameter ranges. If the new particles couple predominantly to second-generation quarks, then their collider probes involve multiple jets and two taus or neutrinos, and are hampered by large backgrounds. If couplings to third-generation quarks are large, then the collider signals involve top quarks, and can be probed more efficiently at the LHC. Even in that case, both the vectorlike fermion doublet and the leptoquarks remain more elusive than in models with standard decays.

Nature of the Correlated Insulator States in Twisted Bilayer Graphene

We use self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculations performed in the full $\pi$-band Hilbert space to assess the nature of the recently discovered correlated insulator states in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). In this work, we find that gaps between the flat conduction and valence bands open at neutrality over a wide range of twist angles, sometimes without breaking the system’s valley projected $\mathcal{C}_2\mathcal{T}$ symmetry. Broken spin-valley flavor symmetries then enable gapped states to form not only at neutrality, but also at total moiré band filling $\textit{n}$ = ± $\textit{p}/4$ with integer $\textit{p}$ = 1, 2, 3, when the twist angle is close to the magic value at which the flat bands are most narrow. Because the magic-angle flat band quasiparticles are isolated from remote band quasiparticles only for effective dielectric constants larger than ~20, the gapped states do not necessarily break $\mathcal{C}_2\mathcal{T}$ symmetry and as a consequence the insulating states at $\textit{n}$ = ± 1/ 4 and $\textit{n}$ = ± 3/4 need not exhibit a quantized anomalous Hall effect.

sPHENIX heavy flavor jet tagging studies in p+p at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200~GeV$

Heavy-flavor jets, which are initiated from heavy quarks, are ideal probes for studying flavor dependent parton energy loss. We report on the performance of jet flavor tagging using two Neural Network Machine Learning (ML) models: the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model and an Attention-based Neural Network, in simulations of 200 GeV p + p collisions. The tagging performance of bottom quark initiated jets with both ML models surpasses that of the traditional cut-based method. Technical details, including sample and kinematic variable selections, the machine learning training and testing setup with parameter tuning, and outcome comparisons, will be discussed.

Supersymmetric gauged $ \mathrm{U}{(1)}_{L_{\mu }-{L}_{\tau }} $ model for electron and muon (g - 2) anomaly

Minimal gauged U 1 L μ - L τ models can provide for an additional source for the muon anomalous magnetic moment however it is difficult to accommodate the discrepancy in the electron magnetic moment in tandem. Owing to the relative sign between the discrepancies in these quantities, it seems unlikely that they arise from the same source. We show that a supersymmetric (SUSY) gauged U 1 L μ - L τ model can accommodate both the muon and electron anomalous magnetic moments in a very simple and intuitive scenario, without utilizing lepton flavor violation. The currently allowed parameter space in this kind of a scenario is constrained from the latest LHC and various low energy experimental data,e.g., recent COHERENT data, CCFR, Borexino, BaBaR, supernova etc. These constraints, in conjunction with the requirement to explain both lepton magnetic moments, lead to an upper bound on the first generation slepton mass, a lower bound on the second generation slepton mass and constricts the allowed range for the new gauge boson mass and coupling. The scheme can be probed at the ongoing COHERENT and Coherent CAPTAIN-Mills experiments and at future experiments, e.g., DUNE, BELLE-II etc.
