Effects of interstage diffuser flow distortion on the performance of a 15.41-centimeter tip diameter axial power turbine

The performance of a variable-area stator, axial flow power turbine was determined in a cold-air component research rig for two inlet duct configurations. The two ducts were an interstage diffuser duct and an accelerated-flow inlet duct which produced stator inlet boundary layer flow blockages of 11 percent and 3 percent, respectively. Turbine blade total efficiency at design point was measured to be 5.3 percent greater with the accelerated-flow inlet duct installed due to the reduction in inlet blockage. Blade component measurements show that of this performance improvement, 35 percent occurred in the stator and 65 percent occurred in the rotor. Analysis of inlet duct internal flow using an Axisymmetric Diffuser Duct Code (ADD Code) were in substantial agreement with the test data.

Tests of low-frequency geometric distortions in LANDSAT-4 images

The geometric fidelity of the GSFC filmwriter used for Thematic Mapper (TM) images was assessed by measurement with accuracy better than three micrometers of a test grid. A set of 55 control points with known UTM coordinates was measured on a digital display of part of band 5 of the TM image of the Washington, D.C. area and fitted to the control points. The tests indicate that the geometric fidelity of TM images is likely to be higher than the ability of film recorders to reproduce the images.

Calculation of unsteady fan rotor response caused by downstream flow distortions

The present model for fan rotor/support strut airfoil interaction uses a time-marching code for the rotor flow, coupled with a potential flow model for the stator-strut region. Study of the effect of strut design variables indicates that rotor flow disturbance is increased by the primary variables of larger strut thickness and circumferential spacing, while decreasing exponentially with increased rotor-strut separation. The time-marching code predicts local rotor pressure and flow perturbations in response to an unsteady downstream boundary condition.

Convection-induced distortion of a solid-liquid interface

Measurements of convective flow fields and solid-liquid interface shapes during the solidification of a pure and a slightly alloyed transparent material reveal that the convective transport of solute can cause a macroscopic depression to develop in the solid-liquid interface. This effect occurs under conditions close to those which are predicted to produce morphological instability of a planar interface. A cellular or dendritic microstructure later develops within the interface depression. The convection is attributed to the effect of radial temperature gradients in the crystal growth apparatus.

The distortion of a supersonic turbulent boundary layer by bulk compression and surface curvature

An experimental investigation is conducted of the effects of bulk compression and streamline curvature on a turbulent supersonic boundary layer whose incoming Mach number is 2.87. Two different, constant-radius curved wall models were used; the total turning angle in both cases was fixed at 8 deg. While the amplification of the normal stress was approximately the same in both models, the amplification of the shear stress was greater in the one with delta(o)/R value 0.1 than in the model with a value of 0.02. The flow over the latter model appears to be especially complex.

Effects of inlet distortion on a static pressure probe mounted on the engine hub in an F-15 airplane

Problems encountered in obtaining good engine face pressure data were studied. A single static measurement located upstream of the engine hub in the stream flow was found to provide a pressure signal suitable for engine control. Two identical probes for measuring fan inlet static (PS2) pressure were designed and mounted on the hub of the left F100-PW-100 turbofan engine installed in the F-15 test aircraft for flight evaluation. The probe is used as a static pressure sensor for a digital engine control system.

Packet flutter and aerodynamic modes for non-homogenous airfoil cascades in highly distorted, periodic, stationary throughflows

An analytical investigation of the general flutter characteristics of periodically detuned airfoil cascades kept in periodically nonuniform basic flows is conducted under the assumption of linearized aerodynamics. The existence of certain packet flutter modes is studied, as are the specific aerodynamic modes to be used in the calculation of the aerodynamic coefficients such that the number of blade passages in the computational domain is minimized. The interpretation of the critical flutter condition for nonuniform flows is examined.

Filter distortion effects on telemetry signal-to-noise ratio

The effect of filtering on the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of a coherently demodulated band-limited signal is determined in the presence of worse-case amplitude ripple. The problem is formulated mathematically as an optimization problem in the L2-Hilbert space. The form of the worst-cast amplitude ripple is specified, and the degradation in the SNR is derived in a closed form expression. It is shown that when the maximum passband amplitude ripple is 2 delta (peak to peak), the SNR is degraded by at most (1 - delta squared), even when the ripple is unknown or uncompensated. For example, an SNR loss of less than 0.01 dB due to amplitude ripple can be assured by keeping the amplitude ripple to under 0.42 dB.

Perfect gas effects in compressible rapid distortion theory

The governing equations presented for small amplitude unsteady disturbances imposed on steady, compressible mean flows that are two-dimensional and nearly uniform have their basis in the perfect gas equations of state, and therefore generalize previous results based on tangent gas theory. While these equations are more complex, this complexity is required for adequate treatment of high frequency disturbances, especially when the base flow Mach number is large; under such circumstances, the simplifying assumptions of tangent gas theory are not applicable.

Navier-Stokes analyses of the redistribution of inlet temperature distortions in a turbine

The flow exiting the combustor and entering the turbine of a gas turbine engine is known to contain both spatial and temporal variations in total temperature. Although historically it has been presumed that the turbine rotor responded to the average temperature, recent experimental evidence has demonstrated that the rotor actually separated the hotter and cooler streams of fluid so that the hotter fluid migrated toward the pressure surface and the cooler fluid migrated toward the suction surface. In the present study a time-accurate, two-dimensional, thin-layer, Navier-Stokes analysis of a turbine stage was used to analyze this phenomenon. The rough qualitative agreement between the measured and the computed results indicated that the analysis had successfully captured many of the important features of the flow.

On the estimation of metal-metal distortions for metal-metal orbital electronic ionizations and excitations

Reference is made to the work of Lichtenberger and Blevins (1984), who resolved a nu(Mo2) vibronic structure in the metal-metal delta-orbital photoelectron ionization band of Mo2(O2CCH3) in the gas phase at 200 C and performed a Franck-Condon analysis of the observed band profile. In the analysis, 'hot bands' were explicitly excluded as having any important effect on the Franck-Condon results. In the analytical study reported in the present paper, it is demonstrated that the thermal effects are indeed significant.

Minimizing the total harmonic distortion for a 3 kW, 20 kHz ac to dc converter using SPICE

This paper describes the SPICE model of a transformer-rectified-filter (TRF) circuit and the Micro-CAP (Microcomputer Circuit Analysis Program) model and their application. The models were used to develop an actual circuit with reduced input current THD. The SPICE analysis consistently predicted the THD improvements in actual circuits as various designs were attempted. In an effort to predict and verify load regulation, the incorporation of saturable inductor models significantly improved the fidelity of the TRF circuit output voltage.

Degradation of signal-to-noise ratio due to amplitude distortion

The effect of filtering on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a coherently demodulated band-limited signal is determined in the presence of worst-case amplitude ripple. The problem is formulated as an optimizaton in the Hilbert space L2. The form of the worst-case amplitude ripple is specified, and the degradation in the SNR is derived in closed form. It is shown that, when the maximum passband amplitude ripple is 2Delta (peak-to-peak), the SNR is degraded by at most (1-Delta-squared), even when the ripple is unknown or uncompensated. For example, an SNR loss of less than 0.01 dB due to amplitude ripple can be assured by keeping the amplitude ripple under 0.42 dB.

Enhanced imaging of reflector antenna surface distortion using microwave holography

Two signal processing techniques are discussed that improve the accuracy of a microwave holographic measurement by removing unwanted signals from the aperture distribution: pattern simulation and subtraction, and time domain filtering. Pattern simulation and subtraction involves modeling unwanted scattering mechanisms and then removing them from the measured far-field data. Measurements taken on a focal point geometry and a Cassegrain geometry at 11 GHz were processed by the holographic analysis system. Pattern simulation and subtraction was applied to both geometries. Surface deformation profiles generated for the Cassegrain antenna by this system were compared to an optical measurement of the main reflector surface.
