Method and apparatus for temperature and voltage management control

A method and apparatus for managing processing power determine a supply voltage to supply to a processing unit, such as a central processing unit (CPU) or graphics processing unit (GPU), based on temperature inversion based voltage, frequency, temperature (VFT) data. The temperature inversion based VFT data includes supply voltages and corresponding operating temperatures that cause the processing unit's transistors to operate in a temperature inversion region. In one example, the temperature inversion based VFT data includes lower supply voltages and corresponding higher temperatures in a temperature inversion region of a processing unit. The temperature inversion based VFT data is based on an operating frequency of the processing unit. The apparatus and method adjust a supply voltage to the processing unit based on the temperature inversion based VFT data.

Frequency threshold determination for frequency-responsive load controllers

Systems, methods, and computer media for managing frequency response in a power grid are provided herein. Individual grid-connected electrical devices can be turned on and/or off by corresponding frequency-responsive load controllers when frequency deviations beyond a threshold are detected. Each controller selects, for the corresponding electrical device, a frequency threshold from available frequencies in a frequency range. If the selected frequency falls within a deadband frequency range, then the controller sets the frequency threshold to a frequency outside of the deadband (e.g., to a closest available frequency outside of the deadband). On a system-wide level, this approximates a uniform distribution of frequency thresholds over the entire frequency range, including the deadband, and achieves the proper power-to-frequency relationship for grid stability. A supervisory coordinator can determine the frequency range from which a frequency threshold is selected based on aggregated power information for devices and controllers throughout the grid.

Track Seeding and Labelling with Embedded-space Graph Neural Networks

To address the unprecedented scale of HL-LHC data, the Exa.TrkX project is investigating a variety of machine learning approaches to particle track reconstruction. The most promising of these solutions, graph neural networks (GNN), process the event as a graph that connects track measurements (detector hits corresponding to nodes) with candidate line segments between the hits (corresponding to edges). Detector information can be associated with nodes and edges, enabling a GNN to propagate the embedded parameters around the graph and predict node-, edge- and graph-level observables. Previously, message-passing GNNs have shown success in predicting doublet likelihood, and we here report updates on the state-of-the-art architectures for this task. In addition, the Exa.TrkX project has investigated innovations in both graph construction, and embedded representations, in an effort to achieve fully learned end-to-end track finding. Hence, we present a suite of extensions to the original model, with encouraging results for hitgraph classification. In addition, we explore increased performance by constructing graphs from learned representations which contain non-linear metric structure, allowing for efficient clustering and neighborhood queries of data points. We demonstrate how this framework fits in with both traditional clustering pipelines, and GNN approaches. The embedded graphs feed into high-accuracy doublet and triplet classifiers, or can be used as an end-to-end track classifier by clustering in an embedded space. A set of post-processing methods improve performance with knowledge of the detector physics. Finally, we present numerical results on the TrackML particle tracking challenge dataset, where our framework shows favorable results in both seeding and track finding.

Studying the effects of overlapping objects in dark energy

Observing the clustering of galaxies allows us to calculate cosmological parameters necessary for understanding dark energy. However, as the density of observed objects increases, the probability of these objects blending likewise increases, causing multiple galaxies to be observed as one. This affects the inferred values of parameters such as the galaxy bias (b) and the matter energy density (ΩM). To see whether the bias from incorrectly inferring the galaxy count is significant, we compare the correlation functions in simulated data for “true” and “observed” data sets with one-to-one and multiple-to-one correspondences, respectively. For each data set, we create two correlation functions: one “measured” function directly relying on the galaxies’ positions using the TreeCorr python library, and one “model” derived mathematically from the galaxies’ power spectrum using the Cosmological Core Library (CCL). By minimizing the residual between these two functions, we compute the ideal values for b and ΩM across the various possible redshifts that position the galaxies in three dimensional space. This minimization is done with an Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) estimate that finds one value of ΩM and ten values for b corresponding to the ten redshift bins ranging from z = 0.2 to z = 1.2. We find that neither b nor ΩM is particularly affected by inclusion of blended galaxies. Though there is room for improvement, the data suggests that the fluctuations we found are a result of noise or limitations on the modeling rather than blending explicitly.

Learning method and system for separating independent and dependent attacks

Streams of monitoring node signal values over time, representing a current operation of the industrial asset, are used to generate current monitoring node feature vectors. Each feature vector is compared with a corresponding decision boundary separating normal from abnormal states. When a first monitoring node passes a corresponding decision boundary, an attack is detected and classified as an independent attack. When a second monitoring node passes a decision boundary, an attack is detected and a first decision is generated based on a first set of inputs indicating if the attack is independent/dependent. From the beginning of the attack on the second monitoring node until a final time, the first decision is updated as new signal values are received for the second monitoring node. When the final time is reached, a second decision is generated based on a second set of inputs indicating if the attack is independent/dependent.

Artificial Linear Brush Abrasion of Coatings for Photovoltaic Module First Surfaces

Natural soiling and the subsequent requisite cleaning of photovoltaic (PV) modules result in abrasion damage to the cover glass. The durability of the front glass has important economic consequences, including determining the use of anti-reflective and/or anti-soiling coatings as well as the method and frequency of operational maintenance (cleaning). Artificial linear brush abrasion using Nylon 6/12 bristles was therefore examined to explore the durability of representative PV first-surfaces, i.e., the surface of a module incident to direct solar radiation. Specimens examined include silane surface functionalized-, roughened (etched)-, porous silica-coated-, fluoropolymer-coated-, and ceramic (TiO2 or ZrO2/SiO2/ZrO2/SiO2)-coated-glass, which are compared to monolithic-poly(methyl methacrylate) and -glass coupons. Characterization methods used in this study include: optical microscopy, ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV-VIS-NIR) spectroscopy, sessile drop goniometry, white-light interferometry, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and depth-profiling X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The corresponding characteristics examined include: surface morphology, transmittance (i.e., optical performance), surface energy (water contact angle), surface roughness, scratch width and depth, and chemical composition, respectively. The study here was performed to determine coating failure modes; identify characterization methods that can detect nascent failures; compare the durability of popular contemporary coating materials; identify their corresponding damage characteristics; and compare slurry and dry-dust abrasion. This study will also aid in developing an abrasion standard for the PV industry.

Coordination namespace processing

An approach is described that accesses data in a shared memory that is shared amongst nodes that include a local node and remote nodes. The local node receives a name corresponding to a named data element in a Coordination Namespace, the Coordination Namespace having been created in a memory distributed amongst the nodes. A hash function is applied to at least a portion of the name with a result of the hash function being a natural node indicator. Data corresponding to the named data element is requested from a natural node identified by the indicator. Based on the request, a response is received from the natural node.

Routing flits in a network-on-chip based on operating states of routers

A system is described that includes an integrated circuit chip having a network-on-chip. The network-on-chip includes multiple routers arranged in a topology and a separate communication link coupled between each router and each of one or more neighboring routers of that router among the multiple routers in the topology. The integrated circuit chip also includes multiple nodes, each node coupled to a router of the multiple routers. When operating, a given router of the multiple routers keeps a record of operating states of some or all of the multiple routers and corresponding communication links. The given router then routes flits to destination nodes via one or more other routers of the multiple routers based at least in part on the operating states of the some or all of the multiple routers and the corresponding communication links.

Method and apparatus for mitigating row hammer attacks

An integrated circuit includes an aggressor wordline cache and logic that determines a candidate upper adjacent address and a candidate lower adjacent address of a target memory row corresponding to a read request to memory. When at least one of the candidate upper adjacent address or the candidate lower adjacent address are determined to be a victim row, the logic checks the aggressor wordline cache for a cache hit for the target memory row. When there is a cache hit in the aggressor wordline cache, the logic sends a corresponding cache line as a response to the read request, otherwise the logic causes a read of content from the memory. In certain examples, the logic includes a stored bit array and a hash function-based filter, which determines whether any of the candidate upper adjacent address and the candidate lower adjacent address are victim rows represented in the stored bit array.

Preliminary Procedures and Acceptance Criteria for in-situ Structural Materials Surveillance for MSR

This report describes the initial development of the technical basis for a materials surveillance technology that, when fully developed and validated, can be used by stakeholders to develop and implement a materials surveillance program to manage materials degradation during reactor operations. The procedures described in this report aim to bound the detrimental effects of the reactor environment on the creep-fatigue life of the reactor components through materials surveillance. Specifically, the report describes procedures for selecting critical locations within the reactor components for surrogate materials surveillance and the sizing and placements of passively-actuated materials surveillance test articles under development by the US Department of Energy, Advanced Reactor Technologies Program. These test articles apply cyclic thermomechanical load to a surrogate sample of the component structural material passively through thermal expansion mismatch within the articles, without requiring any penetrations in the reactor coolant boundary. The procedures can be used to size materials surveillance test articles so that they will fail before the corresponding structural component. These articles would be exposed to the component operating environment, located to experience a bounding radiation fluence and representative coolant exposure. They can be monitored during reactor operations to ensure that they have not failed under the combination of creep-fatigue damage and environmental degradation. The report describes the key technical decisions and the corresponding rational for using these procedures to provide advanced warning of any impending material failure. An appendix describes the technical basis and the procedure for sizing a family of passively-actuated test articles. Finally, the report describes future work needed to complete the technical basis underlying this materials surveillance technology.

Probabilistic Day-Ahead Forecasting Using an Analog Ensemble Approach for Wind Farm Grid Services

Wind resource assessment and wind power forecasting are used in research and industry to anticipate future power output at scales ranging from individual wind turbines to entire wind farms. Probabilistic day-ahead wind forecasting is useful for anticipating how a wind farm could potentially participate in the day-ahead market by providing upper and lower bounds for expected power generation, thus informing grid operators of its uncertainty. Understanding this uncertainty is part of a larger project focused on building a platform that combines efforts in weather forecasting, aerodynamic and economic modeling to create maximum value of a wind plant to better provide services to the grid. This effort is also known as the Atmosphere to Electrons to Grid (A2E2G) project. One method for producing a probabilistic forecast is through the analog ensemble approach (Delle Monache et al., 2011). This method leverages historical forecasts and their corresponding observations as a training data set from which future forecasts can be made. For some future forecast, the most similar historical forecasts (analogs) are identified on a regular time basis such as once per a 3-hour window. The most similar analogs, based on a metric such as root mean square error (RMSE), are recorded and their corresponding verifying observations are used as an ensemble member for this future forecast. Prior work in this area demonstrates improvements over raw Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) forecasts and shows skill similar to techniques such as logistic regression and machine learning (Delle Monache et al., 2013; Alessandrini et al., 2015). Here, we take the High-Resolution Rapid Refresh model (HRRR) day-ahead forecast (0-36 hours) to create a probabilistic day-ahead forecast using an analog ensemble approach. The HRRR has an hourly temporal resolution, with a spatial resolution of 3 km. The 12 UTC HRRR model run is downloaded every day for one year from August 2019 - July 2020, with the first 11 months serving as a bank of analogs from which the forecasting algorithm can create a probabilistic forecast. Once downloaded, the original HRRR forecast is temporally interpolated to 5-minutes, aligning with both the temporal resolution of the observations as well as the timescale relevant for day-ahead power forecasts. The forecast is validated at the M2 tower at the Flatirons Campus of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) at a typical wind turbine height of 80 m. Variables such as wind speed, wind direction, and turbulence intensity are incorporated into the probabilistic forecast model and weighted according to their relative importance to the forecast. Based on metrics such as mean bias error (MBE), mean absolute error (MAE), and root mean square error, the analog ensemble forecast outperforms the raw HRRR forecast during the testing period of July 2020. Figure 1 illustrates an example day-ahead forecast compared against the verifying observations. The general variability and ramps are captured throughout the day, with potential to further improve the analog ensemble model through machine learning techniques.
