Metabolic Interactions between Brachypodium and Pseudomonas fluorescens under Controlled Iron-Limited Conditions

Plant iron (Fe) nutritional status has a significant impact on rhizosphere microbial communities. While this effect has been attributed to alterations in the composition of root exudates, the underlying mechanisms are not known. Here, we investigated the effect of Fe deficiency on the interactions between the grass Brachypodium distachyon and the common soil bacteria Pseudomonas fluorescens SBW25. Increased phytosiderophore production was the most significant response of Brachypodium root exudation to Fe deficiency. We observed upregulated expression of phytosiderophore biosynthesis genes but lower accumulated exudate concentrations in the presence of Pseudomonas, indicating that the bacteria degrade these phytosiderophores. Pseudomonas did not produce endogenous siderophores under the low Fe conditions. Rather, the bacterial transcriptome revealed upregulation of four genes in response to Fe deficiency that contain motifs associated with cellular uptake of small molecules. Collectively, these results suggest that rhizosphere Pseudomonas fluorescens may take up phytosiderophores produced by grasses in response to Fe deficiency, and we propose target genes that may be involved. Our findings provide insight into the molecular basis for the exchange of C, N, and Fe between plants and bacteria under Fe deficient conditions. These interactions may contribute to differences in the rhizosphere microbial community structure across soil pH regimes.

AGGREGATE: dAta-driven modelinG preservinG contRollable dEr for outaGe mAnagemenT and rEsiliency (Report for Task 10: Controllability and Observability Analysis (Deliverable D7))

It is common to have less than full observability for distribution systems, as the number of available measurements are not sufficient. Considering increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs), it is imperative to understand and control distribution systems better. Developed for the transmission system, the original numerical observability analysis methods were based on the canonical DC Power Flow (DC-PF) model. However, the DC-PF model is ill-suited for the distribution system in which line resistance to reactance (R/X) ratios can be near unity. In this report, we apply the non-iterative Observability Test (OT) and Observable Island Identification Procedure (OIIP) in to the gain matrix from the distribution system state estimator. Because sensors are few in distribution systems, pseudo-measurements based on historical load profiles and zero-injection virtual measurements are often employed to ensure observability. However, both the observability and the accuracy of the state estimates are uncertain when historical data is limited/unavailable.

Control of neutral fueling and helium exhaust to NSTX-U plasmas by means of three-dimensional magnetic control fields

Resonant magnetic perturbations are used to stabilize plasma edge instabilities, so-called edge localized modes (ELMs), in high-performance (H-mode) plasmas explored for fusion energy. These ELMs cause repetitive outburst of confined energy and particles and cause cyclic loading of plasma facing components (PFCs). This endangers the integrity of the PFCs and hence limits the lifetime and hence commercial viability of fusion. It was shown that these ELMs can be stabilized by application of small amplitude resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) fields. This removes the ELMs as edge instabilities but also induces three-dimensional (3D) effects to the plasma boundary, which was formerly toroidally axisymmetric. The impact of this 3D perturbation on the plasma boundary solution needs to be understood to extrapolate the effects to ITER and towards a fusion reactor, if ELM control by RMP fields would be utilized.

Material Control and Accounting for Liquid-Fueled Molten Salt Reactors: Material Control and Holdup Considerations

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will likely require license applicants for liquid-fueled molten salt reactors (MSRs) with circulating fuel to submit a nuclear material control and accounting (MC&A) plan or detailed MC&A program description for the facility. In liquid-fueled MSRs with special nuclear material (SNM) in bulk (i.e., not in discrete items) form and rapidly changing quantities due to fuel transmutation and depletion, using traditional nuclear material accounting methods with material balance evaluations is challenging. In reactors with changing inventories, these expected quantities of SNM must be calculated based on operational parameters. Reducing uncertainties on these expected quantities is challenging in the case of MSRs without decades of operational experience to verify and validate predictive computational codes. Moreover, many areas in MSRs are inaccessible because of high-temperature and high-radiation environments, making measurements challenging.

Application of Controller Area Network for Power Converter Network Monitoring and Control

This presentation explores the adaptation and implementation of CAN bus technology in a network of power converters, emphasizing its potential beyond automotive applications. In this system, multiple power converters can utilize the CAN bus to transmit diverse data types, each assigned specific message and node IDs. A central controller continuously monitors the status of each converter, ensuring efficient management and coordination of power distribution. Additionally, an individual CAN node is
