Chiral interactions and superfluidity in the calcium isotopic chain

We perform ab initio calculations of three-point mass differences in the odd- and even-mass 39−49Ca isotopes to probe nuclear superfluidity via empirical neutron pairing gaps. We also quantify the sensitivity of those gaps to the parameters of the interaction at mean-field level. Recent studies employing accurate chiral nuclear interactions have found these gaps to be too small. We show that experimental values can be reproduced at mean-field level by substantially increasing the attraction of the singlet 𝑆 -wave two-nucleon contact interaction, but doing so induces an unphysical bound state of the dineutron. The sensitivity of these predictions to the full calibration of the nuclear interaction is then studied by performing Bayesian posterior sampling in a delta-full chiral effective field theory at third chiral order. We find that pairing gaps remain largely unaffected, leaving the explanation of nuclear superfluidity as a future task for improved many-body modeling and refined interactions at higher chiral orders.

Realizing symmetry-protected topological phases in a spin-1/2 chain with next-nearest-neighbor hopping on superconducting qubits

Quantum simulation on near-term quantum hardware is a topic of intense interest. The preparation of novel quantum states of matter provides a quantitative assessment of the capabilities of near-term digital quantum computers to implement circuits with structure of relevance to quantum simulation. Here, we conduct a benchmark study by realizing symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases of a spin-1/2 Hamiltonian with next-nearest-neighbor hopping on up to 11 qubits on a programmable superconducting quantum processor using adiabatic state preparation. Using recompilation techniques to reduce the gate count to around 50 two-qubit gates, we observe clear signatures of the two distinct SPT phases, such as excitations localized to specific edges and finite string-order parameters. Finally, we identify a parasitic phase associated with the two-qubit gate as the dominant imperfection that limits the depth of the circuits, indicating a research topic of interest for future hardware development.

Ferromagnetism and doublon localization in a Wannier-Hubbard chain

We derive a “Wannier-Hubbard” model consisting of an array of overlapping atomic orbitals interacting via a local Coulomb interaction. Transforming to an orthogonal Wannier basis set, the resulting Hamiltonian displays long-range hopping and interactions, with new terms such as correlated hopping and ferromagnetic direct exchange, among others. We numerically study the one-dimensional version of the model at half-filling using the density matrix renormalization group method, unveiling a rich phase diagram as a function of the interaction U and the overlap s with metallic and ferromagnetic phases separated by a ferrimagnetic region. Our results indicate a path toward understanding emergent phases under pressure and beyond standard model Hamiltonians.

Out-of-equilibrium Majorana zero modes in interacting Kitaev chains

Here, we employ a time-dependent real-space local density-of-states method to study the movement and fusion of Majorana zero modes in the one-dimensional interacting Kitaev model, based on the time evolution of many-body states. We analyze the dynamics and both fusion channels of Majoranas using time-dependent potentials, either creating walls or wells. For fast moving Majoranas, we unveil nonequilibrium signatures of the “strong-zero-mode” operator (quasiparity degeneracy in the full spectrum) and its breakdown in the presence of repulsive Coulomb interactions. Focusing on forming a full electron after fusion, we also discuss the upper and lower limits on the Majorana speed needed to reduce nonadiabatic effects and to avoid poisoning due to decoherence.

Absence of magnetoelastic deformation in the spin-chain compound CuBr 2

Here, we investigate a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnet, CuBr 2 , which has quasi-one-dimensional structural motifs. The system has previously been observed to exhibit unusual Raman modes possibly due to a locally deformed crystal structure driven by the low-dimensional magnetism. Using hard x-ray scattering and neutron total scattering, here we aim to verify a specific form of tetramerizing deformation proposed in the previous study. Apart from diffuse scattering signals, which we can reproduce by performing a thorough modeling of the lattice's thermal vibrations, we do not observe evidence for a tetramerized lattice structure within our detection sensitivity. Consequently, we consider it unlikely that the unusual Raman modes in CuBr 2 arise from quantum spin-singlet-driven lattice deformations.

Evolution of shape and collectivity along the Ge isotopic chain: The case of 80 Ge

In this work, the shape and collectivity of 80 Ge were investigated via a sub-barrier-energy Coulomb excitation measurement using the JANUS setup at the NSCL ReA3 facility. The 80 Ge spectroscopic quadrupole moment $Q_{s}(2^{+}_{1})$ of the $2^{+}_{1}$ state was measured for the first time, and the precision of the 80 Ge $B(E2; 0^{+}_{1}$ → $2^{+}_{1}$) transition strength was increased. The experimental $Q_{s}(2^{+}_{1})$ value indicates a large, prolate deformation for 80 Ge, which is consistent with large-scale shell-model calculations performed for comparison. These results provide important benchmarks for models that try to describe nuclear shape in neutron-rich nuclei near the magic number N=50.
