Experimental apparatus and methodology to test and quantify thermal performance of micro and macro-encapsulated phase change materials in building envelope applications

Thermal energy storage (TES) is used as a viable technology to shift peak electricity demand caused by the space cooling requirements in buildings. Passive TES is implemented in building envelope via micro and macroencapsulation methods. This study describes the use of a state-of-the-art laboratory to test different PCM inclusions in simplified building walls. A microencapsulated PCM and two macroencapsulated PCMs are tested in a controlled environment to gather data for validation purposes of PCM modelling algorithms in building energy modelling programs. Data indicates that the chamber environment and the heating and cooling system can conduct full-cycle tests of wall panels with PCM inclusions. This study also generates data from parallel tests on 4 wall panels which can be used in building energy modelling programs to validate the PCM modelling algorithms. The cyclic tests also capture the thermal effects of PCMs and complex PCM behaviors like sub-cooling in PCM hydrate-salts.

Synergies Between Building-Sited Batteries and Thermal Energy Storage

As renewable penetration increases, there is a greater need for energy storage systems located at buildings. This storage can include batteries, which directly shift the metered load, or thermal energy storage, which shifts thermal-driven electric loads like air conditioning. This presentation covers modeling results of the potential demand reduction and annualized cost savings for different combinations of thermal and battery energy storage sizes. It also shows how battery storage can expand the usefulness of thermal energy storage for electric load shaving, and how thermal storage can lower the cost of the overall storage system and extend battery lifetime by reducing cycling.

Testing the Gamma-Ray Burst Energy Relationships

Building on Nakar & Piran's analysis of the Amati relation relating gamma-ray burst peak energies E(sub p) and isotropic energies E(sub iso ) we test the consistency of a large sample of BATSE bursts with the Amati and Ghirlanda (which relates peak energies and actual gamma-ray energies E(sub gamma)) relations. Each of these relations can be exp ressed as a ratio of the different energies that is a function of red shift (for both the Amati and Ghirlanda relations) and beaming fraction f(sub B) (for the Ghirlanda relation). The most rigorous test, whic h allows bursts to be at any redshift, corroborates Nakar & Piran's r esult - 88% of the BATSE bursts are inconsistent with the Amati relat ion - while only l.6% of the bursts are inconsistent with the Ghirlan da relation if f(sub B) = 1. Modelling the redshift distribution resu lts in an energy ratio distribution for the Amati relation that is sh ifted by an order of magnitude relative to the observed distributions; any sub-population satisfying the Amati relation can comprise at mos t approx. 18% of our burst sample. A similar analysis of the Ghirland a relation depends sensitively on the beaming fraction distribution f or small values of f(sub B); for reasonable estimates of this distrib ution about a third of the burst sample is inconsistent with the Ghir landa relation. Our results indicate that these relations are an artifact of the selection effects of the burst sample in which they were f ound; these selection effects may favor sub-populations for which the se relations are valid.

Developing and tuning a community scale energy model for a disadvantaged community

This work describes the development of a community-scale energy model for a mixed-use low-income community located in Huntington Beach, CA. An accurate community-scale energy model is useful for evaluating the use of limited capital resources used to invest in clean energy technologies. This work lays out the process of developing such a model while relying primarily on publicly available data and highlighting critical partnerships necessary for model development success. The primary contribution of this work is the demonstration of the process used to develop an accurate energy model for a disadvantaged community when minimal building and energy use data is available. The heart of the model is the physics-based community scale energy modeling platform URBANopt. Using a bottom-up load modeling approach, energy simulated energy use falls within 3% or less of aggregate annual utility data, and within 10% or less aggregate monthly utility data. The demonstrated model development and tuning process can be used by others to characterize other atypical communities, which may differ significantly from prototypical models.
