Emergent interlayer magnetic order via strain-induced orthorhombic distortion in the 5 d Mott insulator Sr 2 IrO 4

In this letter, we report a La 2 CuO 4 -like interlayer antiferromagnetic order in Sr2IrO4 films with large orthorhombic distortion (>1.5%). The biaxial lattice strain in epitaxial heterostructures of Sr 2 IrO 4 /Ca 3 Ru 2 O 7 lowers the crystal symmetry of Sr 2 IrO 4 from tetragonal ($C_4$) to orthorhombic ($C_2$), guiding the Ir $5d J_{text{eff}}$ = 1/2 pseudospin moment parallel to the elongated b axis via magnetic anisotropy. From resonant x-ray scattering experiments, we observed an antiferromagnetic order in the orthorhombic Sr 2 IrO 4 film whose interlayer stacking pattern is inverted from that of the tetragonal Sr 2 IrO 4 crystal. This interlayer stacking is similar to that of the orthorhombic La 2 CuO 4 , implying that the asymmetric interlayer exchange interactions between $\textit{a}$ and $\textit{b}$ directions exceed the anisotropic interlayer pseudodipolar interaction. Our result suggests that strain-induced distortion can provide a delicate knob for tuning the long-range magnetic order in quasi-two-dimensional systems by evoking the competition between the interlayer exchange coupling and the pseudodipolar interaction.

Interplay of itinerant electrons and Ising moments in a hybrid honeycomb quantum magnet TmNi 3 Al 9

The interplay between itinerant electrons and local magnetic moments in quantum materials brings about rich and fascinating phenomena and stimulates various developments in the theoretical framework. In this work, thermodynamic, electric transport, and neutron diffraction measurements were performed on a newly synthesized honeycomb lattice magnet TmNi 3 Al 9 . Based on the experimental data, a magnetic-field–temperature phase diagram was constructed, exhibiting three essentially different magnetic regions. Below T N =2.97±0.02KTm 3+ , moments order antiferromagnetically in zero field. We found that the Tm 3+ ions form a pseudodoublet ground state with the Ising-like moments lying normal to the two-dimensional honeycomb layers. Application of a magnetic field along the easy axis gradually suppresses the antiferromagnetic order in favor of an induced ferromagnetic state above the critical field B c =0.92±0.05T. In the vicinity of B c , a strong enhancement of the quantum spin fluctuations was observed. The quantum Ising nature of the local moments and the coupling to itinerant electrons are discussed.

Magnetic excitations, nonclassicality, and quantum wake spin dynamics in the Hubbard chain

Recent work has demonstrated that quantum Fisher information (QFI), a witness of multipartite entanglement, and magnetic Van Hove correlations G(r,t), a probe of local real-space real-time spin dynamics, can be successfully extracted from inelastic neutron scattering on spin systems through accurate measurements of the dynamical spin structure factor S(k,ω). In this work, we apply theoretically these ideas to the half-filled Hubbard chain with nearest-neighbor hopping, away from the strong-coupling limit. This model has nontrivial redistribution of spectral weight in S(k,ω) going from the noninteracting limit (U = 0) to strong coupling (U→∞), where it reduces to the Heisenberg quantum spin chain. We use the density matrix renormalization group to find S(k,ω), from which QFI is then calculated. We find that QFI grows with U. With realistic energy resolution it becomes capable of witnessing bipartite entanglement above U=2.5 (in units of the hopping), where it also changes slope. This point is also proximate to slope changes of the bandwidth W(U) and the half-chain von Neumann entanglement entropy. We compute G(r,t) by Fourier transforming S(k,ω). The results indicate a crossover in the short-time short-distance dynamics at low U characterized by ferromagnetic light-cone wavefronts, to a Heisenberg-type behavior at large U featuring antiferromagnetic light cones and spatially period-doubled antiferromagnetism. We find this crossover has largely been completed by U=3. Our results thus provide evidence that, in several aspects, the strong-coupling limit of the Hubbard chain is reached qualitatively already at a relatively modest interaction strength. We discuss experimental candidates for observing the G(r,t) dynamics found at low U.

Competing magnetic and nonmagnetic states in monolayer VSe 2 with charge density wave

The field of two-dimensional ferromagnets has been reinvigorated by the discovery of VSe 2 monolayer grown on van der Waals substrates, which is reported to be ferromagnetic with a Curie point higher than 330 K. However, the ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic states of pristine monolayer VSe 2 are highly debated. Here, employing density functional theory, Wannier function calculations, and the band unfolding method, we explore the electronic structure of monolayer VSe 2 with a $\sqrt{3} × \sqrt{7}$ charge density wave (CDW). Certain qualitative aspects of the calculated unfolded band dispersion and unfolded Fermi surface of monolayer VSe 2 with the $\sqrt{3} × \sqrt{7}$ CDW in the nonmagnetic state agree well with previous angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy results, albeit with uncertainty about whether these experiments probed single or multiple domains. Specifically, we find that an isolated CDW domain naturally induces a strong breaking of the threefold symmetry of the electronic structure. In addition we find that, relative to the undistorted structure, the CDW structure shows a strong competition between nonmagnetic and various magnetic states, with an energy difference less than 5 meV/f.u. For the CDW structure in the antiferromagnetic state, the band dispersions and Fermi surface are similar to those in the nonmagnetic state, while the unfolded bands of the ferromagnetic CDW state display a sizable exchange splitting. These results indicate the possibility of various antiferromagnetic fluctuations in VSe 2 to coexist and compete with ferromagnetic order and the experimentally reported CDW order. In this work, our calculations build insights for exploring the interplay between magnetism and CDW behaviors more generally in transition metal dichalcogenides.

Spin-orbital liquids and insulator-metal transitions on the pyrochlore lattice

The two orbital Hubbard model, with the electrons additionally coupled to a complex magnetic background, arises in the pyrochlore molybdates. The background involves local moments Hund's coupled to the electrons, driving double exchange ferromagnetism, and antiferromagnetic (AF) tendency arising from competing superexchange. The key scales include the Hubbard repulsion and the superexchange, both of which can be tuned in these materials. They control the phase transition from a ferromagnetic metal to a spin glass metal and then to a spin glass (Mott) insulator. We provide a comprehensive description of the ground state of this model using an unrestricted Hartree-Fock scheme implemented via a simulated annealing procedure and establish the metal-insulator transition line for varying Hubbard interaction and superexchange. The electrons see an effective disorder, due to orbital frustration, already in the ferromagnetic phase. The disorder is further enhanced by antiferromagnetic coupling and the resulting magnetic disorder. As a result, increasing AF coupling shifts the metal-insulator transition to lower Hubbard interaction and gives it an additional "Anderson" character. In conclusion, we provide detailed results on the magnetic and orbital correlations, the density of states, and the optical conductivity.

Phase diagram of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard model on a square lattice

The Hubbard and Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) Hamiltonians are iconic models for understanding the qualitative effects of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions, respectively. In the two-dimensional square lattice Hubbard model at half filling, the on-site Coulomb repulsion U between up and down electrons induces antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and a Mott insulating phase. On the other hand, for the SSH model, there is an AFM phase when the electron-phonon coupling λ is less than a critical value λ c and a bond order wave when λ > λ c . In this Letter, we perform numerical studies on the square lattice optical Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard Hamiltonian, which combines both interactions. We use the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method which does not suffer from the fermionic sign problem at half filling. We map out the phase diagram and find that it exhibits a direct first-order transition between an antiferromagnetic phase and a bond-ordered wave as λ increases. Here, the AFM phase is characterized by two different regions. At smaller λ the behavior is similar to that of the pure Hubbard model; the other region, while maintaining long-range AFM order, exhibits larger kinetic energies and double occupancy, i.e., larger quantum fluctuations, similar to the AFM phase found in the pure SSH model.

Frustrated magnetic cycloidal structure and emergent Potts nematicity in CaMn 2 P 2

We report neutron-diffraction results on single-crystal CaMn 2 P 2 containing corrugated Mn honeycomb layers, and we determine its ground-state magnetic structure. The diffraction patterns consist of prominent (1/6,1/6, L ) reciprocal-lattice unit (r.l.u.; L = integer) magnetic Bragg reflections, whose temperature-dependent intensities are consistent with a first-order antiferromagnetic phase transition at the Néel temperature T N = 70 (1) K. Our analysis of the diffraction patterns reveals an in-plane 6 × 6 magnetic unit cell with ordered spins that in the principal-axis directions rotate by 60°steps between nearest neighbors on each sublattice that forms the honeycomb structure, consistent with the P A c magnetic space group. We find that a few other magnetic subgroup symmetries (P A 2 /c, P C 2/m, P S 1, P C 2, P C m, P S 1) of the paramagnetic $P\bar{3}m11'$ crystal symmetry are consistent with the observed diffraction pattern. We relate our findings to frustrated J 1 -J 2 -J 3 Heisenberg honeycomb antiferromagnets with single-ion anisotropy and the emergence of Potts nematicity.

Electronic structure, magnetic properties, spin orientation, and doping effect in Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6

The layered material Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 , with alternating stacking honeycomb and triangular layers, is attracting considerable attention due to its rich physical properties. Here, in this study, using density functional theory and classical Monte Carlo (MC) methods, we systematically study this system with the 3d 5 electronic configuration. Near the Fermi level, the states are mainly contributed by Te 5p orbitals hybridized with Mn 3d orbitals, resembling a charge-transfer system. Furthermore, the spin orientations of the ferrimagnetic (FiM) ground state display different conductive behaviors when along the ab plane or out-of-plane directions: insulating vs metallic states. The energy difference between the FiM [110] insulating and FiM [001] metallic phases is very small (~0.71 meV/Mn) . Changing the angle θ of spin orientation from in-plane to out-of-plane directions, the band gaps of this system are gradually reduced, leading to an insulator-metal transition, resulting in an enhanced electrical conductivity, related to the colossal angular magnetoresistance (MR) effect. Although the three main magnetic couplings were found to be antiferromagnetic, overall the ground state is FiM. In addition, we also constructed the magnetic phase diagram using the classical XY spin model studied with the MC method. Three magnetic phases were obtained, including antiferromagnetic order, noncollinear spin patterns, and FiM order. Moreover, we also investigated the Se and Ge doping into the Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 system: the FiM state has the lowest energy among the magnetic candidates for both Se- and Ge-doped cases. The magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) decreases in the Se-doped case because the Mn orbital moment is reduced as the doping x increases. Due to the small spin-orbit-coupling effect of Se, the insulator-metal transition caused by the spin orientation disappears in the Se-doped case, resulting in an insulating phase in the FiM [001] phase. This causes a reduced colossal angular MR. However, both the MAE and the band gap of the Ge-doped case do not change much with increasing doping x . Our results for Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 could provide guidance to experimentalists and theorists working on this system or related materials.

Anisotropic magnetism and electronic structure of trigonal EuAl 2 Ge 2 single crystals

Understanding the interplay between magnetic and electronic degrees of freedom is of profound recent interest in different Eu-based magnetic topological materials. Here, we studied the magnetic and electronic properties of the layered Zintl-phase compound EuAl 2 Ge 2 crystallizing in the trigonal CaAl 2 Si 2 -type structure. We report zero-field neutron diffraction, temperature T - and magnetic-field H-dependent magnetic susceptibility χ(T, H), isothermal magnetization M(T, H), heat capacity C p (T, H), and electrical resistivity ρ(T, H) measurements, together with T-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements complemented with first-principle calculations. EuAl 2 Ge 2 undergoes second-order A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering below T N = 27.5(5) K, with the Eu moments (Eu 2+ , S = 7/2) aligned ferromagnetically in the ab plane while these layers are stacked antiferromagnetically along the c axis. The critical fields at which all moments become parallel to the field are 37.5(5) and 52.5(5) kOe for H ∥ ab and H ∥ c, respectively. The H = 0 magnetic structure consists of trigonal AFM domains associated with ab-plane magnetic anisotropy and a field-induced reorientation of the Eu spins in the domains is also evident at T = 2 K below the critical field H c1 = 2.5(1) kOe. The ρ(T) measurements reveal metallic behavior transforming into a slight resistivity increase on cooling towards T N . A pronounced loss of spin-disorder scattering is observed below T N . The ARPES results show that EuAl 2 Ge 2 is metallic both above and below T N , and the Fermi surface is anisotropic with two hole pockets at the zone center and one small electron pocket at each M point. In the AFM phase, we directly observe folded bands in ARPES due to the doubling of the magnetic unit cell along the c axis with an enhancement of quasiparticle weight due to the complex change in the coupling between the magnetic moments and itinerant electrons on cooling below T N . The observed electronic structure is well reproduced by first-principle calculations, which also predict the presence of nontrivial electronic states near the Fermi level in the AFM phase with Z 2 topological numbers 1;(000)

Creating a three-dimensional intrinsic electric dipole on rotated CrI 3 bilayers

Here two-dimensional (2D) materials are being explored as a novel multiferroic platform. One of the most studied magnetoelectric multiferroic 2D materials are antiferromagnetically coupled (AFM) CrI 3 bilayers. Neglecting magnetism, those bilayers possess a crystalline point of inversion, which is only removed by the antiparallel spin configuration among its two constituent monolayers. The resulting intrinsic electric dipole on those bilayers has a magnitude no larger than 0.04 pC/m, it points out of plane, and it reverts direction when the Ising-like-chromium spins are flipped (toward opposite layers versus away from opposite layers). The combined presence of antiferromagnetism and a weak intrinsic electric dipole makes this material a two-dimensional magnetoelectric multiferroic. Here, we remove the crystalline center of inversion of the bilayer by a relative 60° rotation of its constituent monolayers. This process enhances the out-of-plane intrinsic electric dipole tenfold with respect to its magnitude in the nonrotated AFM bilayer and also creates an even stronger and switchable in-plane intrinsic electric dipole. The ability to create a three-dimensional electric dipole is important because it enhances the magnetoelectric coupling on this experimentally accessible 2D material, which is explicitly calculated here as well.

Thermal Hall effect in a van der Waals triangular magnet FeCL 2

Thermal transport is a pivotal probe for studying low-energy, charge-neutral quasiparticles in insulating magnets. In this Letter, we report an observation of large magnetothermal conductivity and thermal Hall effect (THE) in a van der Waals antiferromagnet FeCl 2 . The magnetothermal conductivity reaches over ~700%, indicating strong magnon-phonon coupling. Furthermore, we find an appreciable thermal Hall signal which changes sign concurrently with the spin-flip transition from the antiferromagnetic state to the polarized ferromagnetic state. Our theoretical calculations suggest that, in addition to the Berry curvature induced at the anticrossing points of the hybridized magnon and acoustic phonon modes of FeCl 2 , other mechanisms are needed to account for the magnitude of the observed THE.

Confinement of many-body Bethe strings

Based on the Bethe ansatz approach and inelastic neutron scattering experiments, we reveal the evolution of confinement of many-body Bethe strings in ordered regions of the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet YbAlO 3 . In the antiferromagnetic phase, the spin dynamics is dominated by confined length-1 Bethe strings, whose dominancy in the high-energy branch of the excitation spectrum yields to confined length-2 Bethe strings when the material is tuned to the spin-density-wave phase. In the thermal-induced disordered region, the confinement effect disappears, and the system restores the conventional quantum integrable physics of the one-dimensional Heisenberg model. Finally, our results establish a unified picture based on a Bethe string for the spin dynamics in different magnetic phases of YbAlO 3 , and thus provide profound insight into many-body quantum magnetism.

Hybrid s -wave superconductivity in CrB 2

In a metal with multiple Fermi pockets, the formation of s-wave superconductivity can be conventional due to electron-phonon coupling or unconventional due to spin fluctuations. Here, we analyze the hexagonal diboride CrB 2 , which is an itinerant antiferromagnet at ambient conditions and turns superconducting upon increasing pressure. While the high-pressure behavior of T c suggests conventional s-wave pairing, we find that spin fluctuations promoting unconventional s-wave pairing become important in the vicinity of the antiferromagnetic dome. As the symmetry class of the s-wave state is independent of its underlying mechanism, we argue that CrB 2 is a realization of a hybrid s-wave superconductor where unconventional and conventional s-wave mechanisms team up to form a joint superconducting dome.

Attractive Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard model on a square lattice away from half-filling

The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, with bond phonons modulating electron tunneling, is a paradigmatic electron-phonon model that hosts an antiferromagnetic order to bond order transition at half-filling. In the presence of a repulsive Hubbard interaction, the antiferromagnetic phase is enhanced, but the phase transition remains first order. Here, we explore the physics of the SSH model with an attractive Hubbard interaction, which hosts an interesting interplay among charge order, s-wave pairing, and bond order. Using the numerically exact determinant quantum Monte Carlo method, we show that both charge order, present at weak electron-phonon coupling, and bond order, at large coupling, give way to s-wave pairing when the system is doped. Lastly, we demonstrate that the SSH electron-phonon interaction competes with the attractive Hubbard interaction and reduces the s-wave pairing correlation.

Spin frustration and an exotic critical point in ferromagnets from nonuniform opposite g factors

Here, it is demonstrated that novel spin frustration can be induced in ferromagnets with nonuniform opposite Landé g-factors. The frustrated state is characterized by a mutual interplay of typical ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AF) features, such as the zero-field susceptibility being FM-like at low temperatures but AF-like at high temperatures. It is also found to contain an exotic zero-temperature 'half fire, half ice' critical point at which the spins on one sublattice are fully disordered and on the other one are fully ordered. We suggest that such frustration may occur in a number of copper-iridium oxides such as Sr 3 CuIrO 6 . We also anticipate a realization of the frustration and 'partial fire, partial ice' states in certain antiferromagnets, lattice gas, and neuron systems.

In-plane anisotropic magnetoresistance in detwinned BaFe 2-x Ni x As 2 (x = 0, 0.6)

Understanding the magnetoresistance (MR) of a magnetic material forms the basis for uncovering the orbital mechanisms and charge-spin interactions in the system. Although the parent state of iron-based high-temperature superconductors, including BaFe 2 As 2 , exhibits unusual electron transport properties resulting from spin and charge correlations, there is still valuable insight to be gained by understanding the in-plane MR effect due to twin domains in the orthorhombic antiferromagnetic ordered state. Here, we study the in-plane magnetoresistance anisotropy in detwinned BaFe 2 As 2 and compare the results to the nonmagnetic Ni-doped sample. We find that in the antiferromagnetically ordered state, BaFe 2 As 2 exhibits anisotropic MR that becomes large at low temperatures and high fields. Both transverse and longitudinal MRs are highly anisotropic and dependent on the field and current orientations. Furthermore, these results cannot be fully explained by calculations considering only the anisotropic Fermi surface. Instead, the spin orientation of the ordered moment also affects the MR effect, suggesting the presence of a large charge-spin interaction in BaFe 2 As 2 that is not present in the Ni-doped material.

Long-range three-dimensional magnetic structures of the spin S =1 hexamer cluster fedotovite-like A 2 Cu 3 O ( SO 4 ) 3 ( A 2 = K 2 , NaK, Na 2 ): A neutron diffraction study

The crystal and magnetic structures of the spin S = 1 hexamer cluster fedotovite-like A 2 Cu 3 O(SO 4 ) 3 (A 2 = K 2 , NaK, Na 2 ) were studied by neutron powder diffraction at temperatures 1.6–290 K. The crystal structures in all compounds are well refined in the monoclinic space group C2/c. The basic magnetic units of the compounds are copper hexamers, which are coupled by weak superexchange interactions giving rise to three-dimensional long-range magnetic order below 3.0 < T N < 4.7 K. We have found that for A 2 = K 2 and NaK the propagation vector of the magnetic structure is k = [0,0,0], and the coupling of the Cu hexamers is ferromagnetic (FM) along the ab diagonal and antiferromagnetic along the bc diagonal. In contrast, for A = Na the propagation vector is k = [0,1,0], and the Cu hexamers are coupled antiferromagnetically (AFM) along the ab diagonal. Further, the hexamers are formed by three Cu pairs arranged along the b axis. The calculated spin expectation values $\langle s \rangle$ for the simplest symmetric spin Hamiltonian (obtained from inelastic neutron spectroscopy) of the isolated hexamers in the mean field amounted to $\langle s \rangle$ = 3/8 for the side spins Cu1 and Cu2 and $\langle s \rangle$ = 1/4 for Cu3 in the middle. The Cu spins are FM coupled in pairs and AFM between neighboring pairs. The experimental magnetic moments of the Cu 2+ ions turn out to be not completely collinear due to spin frustrations within the weak interhexamer interactions. The sizes of magnetic moments of Cu in the hexamers determined from the diffraction data are in fair agreement with the calculated values.

Magnetism in the axion insulator candidate Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6

Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 is a member of a family of orthorhombic nonsymmorphic rare-earth intermetallics that combines large localized magnetic moments and itinerant exchange with a low carrier density and perpendicular glide planes. This may result in special topological crystalline (wallpaper fermion) or axion insulating phases. Recent studies of Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 single crystals have revealed colossal negative magnetoresistance and multiple magnetic phase transitions. Here, we clarify this ordering process using neutron scattering, resonant elastic x-ray scattering, muon spin-rotation, and magnetometry. The nonsymmorphic and multisite character of Eu 5 In 2 Sb 6 results in coplanar noncollinear magnetic structures with an Ising-like net magnetization along the a axis. A reordering transition, attributable to competing ferro- and antiferromagnetic couplings, manifests as the onset of a second commensurate Fourier component. In the absence of spatially resolved probes, the experimental evidence for this low-temperature state can be interpreted either as an unusual double- q structure or in a phase separation scenario. The net magnetization produces variable anisotropic hysteretic effects which also couple to charge transport. The implied potential for functional domain physics and topological transport suggests that this structural family may be a promising platform to implement concepts of topological antiferromagnetic spintronics.
