Measuring Neutrino Oscillations in the NOvA and CHIPS Detectors.

NOvA is a long baseline neutrino experiment which uses muon neutrinos produced by the NuMI beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory to measure muon neutrino disappearance and electron neutrino appearance, among other analyses. The Far/Near Extrapolation analysis framework (FNEX) was used to measure muon neutrino disappearance using the events observed by NOvA while the NuMI beam was in Forward Horn Current configuration (i.e. this analysis uses neutrino data, not antineutrino data). The values of the parameters measured in this analysis are sin 2 θ 23 - 0.499$^{+0.098}_{-0.069}$ and Δm$^2_{32}$ - 2.454$^{+0.108}_{0.119}$ × 10 -3 eV, which is consistent with the results of NOvA’s main muon neutrino disappearance analysis using the experiment’s usual framework, known as CAF. The CHIPS detector is a water Cherenkov detector currently in construction. It will also use the NuMI beam to perform muon neutrino disappearance and electron neutrino appearance analyses. The necessary water clarity for a detector with a diameter of 25 m and a height of 6 m is discussed, as well as the results of testing water filtration systems. The filtration that will be used for the detector is a 10 µm carbon block filter and a 0.5 µm filter in series, with no reverse osmosis or ultraviolet sterilisation being used. This provides an attenuation length of 16.63 ± 0.25 m for light of 532 nm wavelength (green), so light with a wavelength of 405 nm (violet) would have an attenuation length of 133±2 m. The greatest possible distance between a PMT and any point in the detector’s volume is approximately 26 m, so 133 m is sufficient for the detector to measure Cherenkov light produced anywhere in the detector.

Two dimensional meta-material windows

Conductive nanoshells are oriented so as to redirect incident radiation as a function of wavelength. Nanoshells can be formed on templates such as nanospheres or gratings and embedded in an elastomeric layer. In some examples, conductive nanoshells are coupled to a layer that is configured to unbuckle and buckle as a function of temperature, so that radiation in one or more wavelength ranges is directed differently at different temperatures. Building windows can include such layers to that infrared radiation is reflected on warm days and directed into a building on cool days. Such layers can also direct incident visible radiation to a room ceiling so as to enhance interior lighting.

Ultraviolet radiation pre-treatment of wastewater, improving its utility for algal cultivation

The present invention relates to a process of remediating wastewaters, preferably agricultural wastewaters resulting from animal production or contained animal feeding operation sites. The water is treated to promote assimilation of nutrients into algal biomass, which can be harvested and sold, and the resultant wastewater is then purified. According to the invention, short wavelength UV radiation (less than 280 nm wavelength) is used to pretreat wastewater, with the dose determined by absorbance of the water, not by bacterial load. Pretreated water exhibits changes in chromophoric dissolved organic matter that allows for improved and increased algae production by as much as 88%.

Non-destructive, in-situ evaluation of water presence using thermal contrast and cooled detector

Exemplary systems for detecting water include: a light source positioned to transmit thermal radiation through a sample; a lens assembly positioned to: receive the thermal radiation transmitted through the sample; and focus the transmitted thermal radiation onto a filter positioned between the lens assembly and a detector; and a cooling subsystem for cooling the filter and the detector to a temperature below that of the sample. The filter (1) selectively transmits first portions of the thermal radiation received from the lens assembly and characterized by a wavelength at least partially overlapping a predefined water absorption band and/or a predefined water absorption line; and (2) selectively blocks second portions of the thermal radiation received from the lens assembly and characterized by a wavelength outside the predefined water absorption band and/or the predefined water absorption line. Methods for detecting presence of water in a sample are also disclosed.

Carrier Lifetime as a Function of Se Content for CdSexTe1-x Films Grown on Al2O3 and MgZnO: Preprint

Time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) with two excitation wavelengths – 670 (standard) and 405 nm – was used to examine the effect on carrier lifetime of two significant recent advances in CdTe: the incorporation of Se to form graded CdSe x Te 1-x and the use of Mg y Zn 1-y O buffers. The two excitation wavelengths probe depths of approximately 130 and 35 nm, respectively, and their comparison helps differentiate interface and bulk contributions to carrier lifetime. It was found that x = 0.2 Se was required to obtain lifetime improvements, primarily in the bulk. Additionally, TRPL traces for Mg y Zn 1-y O/CdSe x Te 1-x samples showed fast initial decay followed by a long-lived tail, which may be indicative of trap-dominated recombination. This behavior was not present for CdSe x Te 1-x films grown on Al 2 O 3 , which is currently state-of-the-art for surface passivation in CdTe. This indicates that further work is required to sufficiently passivate the front interface.

Strain control in optoelectronic devices

A coating having a mismatched coefficient of thermal expansion is applied to an underlying light emitting diode (LED) or laser diode (LD), such that as the temperature of the device changes, a varying level of strain is introduced to the underlying LED or LD. Because strain can also adjust the effective bandgap energy (and hence emission wavelength) of the device, the external strain-inducing coating can act to either compensate for the wavelength shift due to temperature (resulting in reduced dλ/dT) or accentuate it (resulting in increased dλ/dT). By proper selection of coating material and geometry, full control over dλ/dT can be achieved.

Optically enhanced patternable photosensitivity via oxygen excitation

The present disclosure relates to a method for performing a three dimensional (3D) printing process. A primary light beam having a wavelength sufficient to initiate polymerization of a photoresin is generated and patterned into a patterned primary beam. The patterned primary beam is directed toward an ultraviolet (UV) or visible light sensitive photoresin to initiate polymerization of select areas of the photoresin. The photoresin is also illuminated with a secondary light beam having a wavelength of at least one of about 765 nm, 1064 nm, or 1273 nm. The secondary light beam stimulates triplet oxygen into singlet oxygen, which controls oxygen inhibition in additional areas bordering the select areas, to enable controlled polymerization inhibition in the additional areas bordering the select areas.

Qualification study of SiPMs on a large scale for the CMVD Experiment

A Cosmic Muon Veto (CMV) detector using extruded plastic scintillators is being designed around the mini-Iron Calorimeter (mini-ICAL) detector at the transit campus of the India based Neutrino Observatory, Madurai for the feasibility study of shallow depth underground experiments. The scintillation signals that are produced in the plastic due to muon trajectories are absorbed by wavelength shifting (WLS) fibres. The WLS fibres re-emit photons of longer wavelengths and propagate those to silicon photo-multipliers (SiPMs). The SiPMs detect these photons, producing electronic signals. The CMV detector will use more than 700 scintillators to cover the mini-ICAL detector and will require around 3000 SiPMs. The design goal for the cosmic muon veto efficiency of the CMV is >99.99%. Hence, every SiPM used in the detector needs to be tested and characterised to satisfy the design goal of CMV. A mass testing system was developed for the measurement of gain and choice of the overvoltage ($V_{ov}$) of each SiPMs using an LED driver. The $V_{ov}$ is obtained by studying the noise rate, the gain of the SiPM. This paper describes the experimental setup used to test the SiPMs characteristics along with detailed studies of those characteristics as a function of temperature.

Optical design concept of the CMB-S4 large-aperture telescopes and cameras

CMB-S4 -- the next-generation ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment - will significantly advance the sensitivity of CMB measurements and improve our understanding of the origin and evolution of the universe. CMB-S4 will deploy large-aperture telescopes fielding hundreds of thousands of detectors at millimeter wavelengths. We present the baseline optical design concept of the large-aperture CMB-S4 telescopes, which consists of two optical configurations: (i) a new off-axis, three-mirror, free-form anastigmatic design and (ii) the existing coma-corrected crossed-Dragone design. We also present an overview of the optical configuration of the array of silicon optics cameras that will populate the focal plane with 85 diffraction-limited optics tubes covering up to 9 degrees of field of view, up to $1.1 \, \rm mm$ in wavelength. We describe the computational optimization methods that were put in place to implement the families of designs described here and give a brief update on the current status of the design effort.

Mass testing of SiPMs for the CMVD at IICHEP

A Cosmic Muon Veto Detector (CMVD) is being built around the mini-Iron Calorimeter (mini-ICAL) detector at the transit campus of the India based Neutrino Observatory, Madurai. The CMV detector will be made using extruded plastic scintillators with embedded wavelength shifting (WLS) fibres which propagate re-emitted photons of longer wavelengths to silicon photo-multipliers (SiPMs). The SiPMs detect these scintillation photons, producing electronic signals. The design goal for the cosmic muon veto efficiency of the CMV is $>$99.99% and fake veto rate less than 10$^{-5}$. A testing system was developed, using an LED driver, to measure the noise rate and gain of each SiPM, and thus determine its overvoltage ($V_{ov}$). This paper describes the test results and the analysed characteristics of about 3.5k SiPMs.

A highly efficient multi junction photovoltaic device, such as a two, three, or four junction device, is disclosed. The multi-junction device may include a first subcell comprising a first photoactive region and a second subcell comprising a second photoactive region. The first and second photoactive regions are designed to minimize spectral overlap and maximize photocurrent across a broad absorption spectra, such as wavelengths ranging from 400 nm to 900 nm. By adding an additional (3rd) sub-cell that absorbs at the second order optical interference maximum within the stack. The triple junction cell significantly improves the quantum efficiency at shorter wavelengths, achieving a power conversion efficiency of 11.1±0.5%.
