Lunar soil coefficient of friction determined from Surveyor data and laboratory tests

A series of laboratory tests on simulated soils was conducted to evaluate some of these physical properties. Using soils similar to lunar soil composition, particle size distribution, and cohesion as determined from the Surveyor mission, the coefficient of friction and bulk density were evaluated by reproducing soils with the same force vs penetration characteristics as demonstrated at the Surveyor landing sites. The determination of soil coefficient of friction is presented in this paper; the soil density is treated separately in the previous paper’ of this report.

Smoothed thermocouple tables of extended significance, volume 1

Although thermocouple calibration tables of emf (mv abs) vs temperature usually have enough significant digits for many purposes, the rounding errors often limit the use of these tables (and hence thermocouples) for precise measurements of temperature related effects such as thermal conductivity or specific heat. Fourteen calibration tables for common thermocouples from NBS Circular 561 and for cryogenic thermocouples from NBS Report 9712 were smoothed, and these are given in vol. 2 of this report. In this volume (vol.1), a general discussion of data smoothing techniques and a description of the procedures by which the smoothed tables were prepared are given.
