radkit v1.2

The radkit software suite (python) consists of three primary libraries: stark, trajan, and curie. The trajan library provides the tools to analyze and manipulate data from lidar and inertial measurement unit (IMU) devices as well as trajectories from algorithms such as simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). These components allow reading and writing standard data formats, performing rigid affine transformations, discretizing three-dimensional space, and visualizing data products. The curie library comprises a standard set of object-oriented tools for radiation data and analysis in the following modules: (1) listmode and binmode data classes with methods for manipulation, plotting, slicing and file IO; (2) radiological/nuclear source detection/identification analysis results; (3) source encounters of correlated analyses and (4) energy-dependent angular detector response functions. The stark package provides low-level tools that are leveraged by both curie and trajan. The tools are flexible for offline analysis as well as performant for real-time integrations. The radkit libraries have associated Robot Operating System packages for use in real-time and robotic systems.

sbang

sbang lets users run scripts with very long shebang (#!) lines. Many operating systems limit the length and number of possible arguments in shebang lines, making it hard to use interpreters that are deep in the directory hierarchy or require special arguments. To use it, a user puts the long shebang on the second line of their script, and makes sbang the interpreter, like this: #!/bin/sh /path/to/sbang #!/long/path/to/real/interpreter with arguments. sbang will run the real interpreter with the script as its argument.

Polyglot Framework

Polyglot utilizes a combination of custom and open source tools and libraries to provide developers with a consistent environment for building tools, etc. for a wide variety of targets with minimal changes to the code being built. It supports a variety of architectures and operating systems/firmware in as target-agnostic way as possible. This allows for developers to minimize the amount of time/effort required to port tools—in particular, forensic tools—to a wide variety of targets. The project is comprised of two main components: a frontend toolchain that understands how to utilize other tools in order to build code for a specific target, and a minimalistic C library specific to Polyglot. These collectively provide the method to build code for a specific target, and the capability for code to interact with the underlying operating system when run on the target. Both components are written in a way to minimize the amount of target-specific knowledge required to both develop and utilize the project.

Electric Grid Simulator For Human Factor Research

The developed code simulates real-time monitor and control for west area of IEEE 118-bus system. The 24-hour load profile for each bus is derived by scaling the system’s rated load in the PSSE sav file according to the California Independent System Operator’s Day-ahead load forecast for May 1, 2024. This simulator performs several critical functions: (1) Calculating time-series power flow every 4 seconds; (2) Updating and dispatching AGC signals every minute; (3) Conducting N-1 contingency analysis every 5 minutes. Additionally, the simulator can trip lines and subsequently update and dispatch AGC signals, running power flow analysis after each tripping event.

CO2 Handling & Electrolyzer Efficiency Scaling Evaluator

CHEESE is an interactive dashboard tool for estimating the performance and material requirements of carbon dioxide electrolysis systems. It helps users evaluate how electrode area, current density, product selectivity, gas flow, cell voltage, and the number of cells in a stack affect system operation. The dashboard provides simple and advanced modes so it can be used for both quick estimates and more detailed engineering analysis. Users can estimate product output, carbon dioxide use, electrical power, electrode area, gas and liquid flow rates, energy efficiency, material cost per test, and the effect of scaling from a single cell to a multi cell stack. It also includes tools for examining carbon balance, equipment durability, component replacement, and changes in performance over time. This is intended to help both academia and industry researchers who are either getting into CO2 electrolysis on lab-scale or are trying to establish a larger footprint. CHEESE presents results through tables, charts, and simplified cell and stack diagrams. It is intended to support research planning, experimental design, comparison of operating conditions, and early stage scale up studies.

Variability in Wind Energy Generation across the Contiguous United States

ERA5 provides high-resolution, high-quality hourly wind speeds at 100 m and is a unique resource for quantifying temporal variability in likely wind-derived power production across the United States. Gross capacity factors (CF) in seven independent system operators (ISOs) are estimated using the location and rated power of each wind turbine, a simplified power curve, and ERA5 output from 1979 to 2018. Excluding the California ISO, the marginal probability of a calm (zero power production) is less than 0.1 in any ERA5 grid cell. When a calm occurs, the mean co-occurrence across wind-turbine-containing grid cells ranges from 0.38 to 0.39 for ISOs in the Midwest and central plains [Midcontinent (or Midwest) ISO (MISO), Southwest Power Pool (SPP), and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) region], increasing to 0.54–0.58 for ISOs in the eastern United States [Pennsylvania–New Jersey–Maryland interconnection (PJM), New York ISO (NYISO), and New England ISO (NEISO)]. Periods with low gross CF have a median duration of ≤6 h, except in California, and are most likely during summer. Additionally, gross CF exhibit highest variance at periods of 1 day in ERCOT and SPP; on synoptic scales in MISO, NEISO, and NYISO; and on interannual time scales in PJM. This implies differences in optimal strategies for ensuring resilience of supply. Theoretical scenarios show adding wind energy capacity near existing wind farms is advantageous even in areas with high existing installed capacity (IC), while expanding into areas with lower IC is more beneficial to reducing ramps and the probability of gross CF falling below 20%. These results emphasize the benefits of large balancing areas and aggregation in reducing wind power variability and the likelihood of wind droughts.

Recent Developments in Security-Constrained AC Optimal Power Flow: Overview of Challenge 1 in the ARPA-E Grid Optimization Competition

In “Recent Developments in Security-Constrained AC Optimal Power Flow: Overview of Challenge 1 in the ARPA-E Grid Optimization Competition,” we review the state of the art in practical algorithms for scheduling power-systems operations in the short term and the results of the recent competition organized by the U.S. Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy. We explain the mixed-integer nonlinear formulation used in the competition for nonspecialists in electrical engineering, the context and organization of the competition, and the performance of competitors. We find that the collective approaches and results of competitors provide support for efforts to move nonlinear optimization techniques into industrial applications, as they have proven to be a robust and efficient alternative to current linear approximation techniques.

Compact, ultrastable, high repetition-rate 2 μm and 3 μm fiber laser for seeding mid-IR OPCPA

We report a compact and reliable ultrafast fiber laser system optimized for seeding a high energy, 2 μ m pumped, 3 μ m wavelength optical parametric chirped pulse amplification to drive soft X-ray high harmonics. The system delivers 100 MHz narrowband 2 μ m pulses with >1 nJ energy, synchronized with ultra-broadband optical pulses with a ∼1 μ m FWHM spectrum centered at 3 μ m with 39 pJ pulse energy. The 2 μ m and 3 μ m pulses are derived from a single 1.5 μ m fiber oscillator, fully fiber integrated with free-space downconversion for the 3 μ m. The system operates hands-off with power instabilities <0.2% over extended periods of time.

Chirped laser dispersion spectroscopy for spectroscopic chemical sensing with simultaneous range detection

Spectroscopic chemical detection requires knowledge or determination of an optical path for accurate quantification of path-integrated concentration of species. Continuous- wave-laser-based spectroscopic systems operating in an open integrated-path remote sensing configuration are usually not equipped for optical path determination. Here we demonstrate a measurement technique capable of simultaneous spectroscopic chemical quantification and range finding. Here, the range-finding functionality is implemented with chirped laser dispersion spectroscopy. The methodology is potentially useful for remote chemical sensing in a hard-target LIDAR configuration and for automatic calibration of gas cells with unknown or varying lengths.

Demonstration of a 1 TW peak power, joule-level ultrashort Tm:YLF laser

Here we report on the demonstration of a diode-pumped, Tm:YLF-based, chirped pulse amplification laser system operating at λ ≈ 1.9 µm that produces amplified pulse energies exceeding 1.5 J using a single 8-pass power amplifier. The amplified pulses are subsequently compressed to sub-300 fs durations by a diffraction grating pair, producing record >1 TW peak power pulses. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest peak power demonstrated for any solid-state, near-2 µm laser architecture and illustrates the potential of Tm:YLF for the next generation of high-power, diode-pumped ultrashort lasers.
