Split-Step Simulations to Assess the Effects of Atmospheric Boundary Layer Turbulence on the Dose Variability of N-Waves and Shaped Booms

The effects of atmospheric boundary layer turbulence on the loudness variability of a sonic boom N-wave and shaped boom are examined with split-step simulations. The shaped boom is representative of a design iteration of the NASA X-59 aircraft. Inhomogeneous atmospheric boundary layer turbulence is generated in the computational domain by a Fourier synthesis method. The N-wave and shaped boom are propagated through turbulent fields representing eight different convection levels measured at the NASA Kennedy Space Center and the NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center. Probability density functions of the formation of caustic regions along the propagation direction are computed from the N-wave results, and a parameter to collapse the caustic PDFs that accounts for both fluctuation intensities and length scales is proposed. Statistical results concerning loudness metric variability are presented, and the standard deviations of several metrics are shown to collapse across different convection levels of turbulence for small nondimensional propagation distances. The loudness metric distributions are observed to be well approximated by a normal distribution for a given range of propagation distances, and become increasingly skewed as distance increases. A model function for the dose variability is proposed, and the function parameters are found to be related to the convection level of the turbulence. The model for the dose variability distribution is compared to simulation data that were not used to find the regression parameters of the model. At several nondimensional propagation distances, agreement is observed between the model and the simulation data. These results indicate that the model may be suitable for providing quick estimates of noise dose variability in the primary carpet region across a wide range of atmospheric boundary layer conditions.

Direct Impact Split-Hopkinson Bar Experiment for Compression Testing at Strain Rate of 50,000 S-1

A direct impact Hopkinson compression bar experiment is used for compression testing at strain rates in the order of 50,000 s-1. A short specimen mounted on the cross-section surface of a transmitter bar is impacted directly by a projectile (the incident bar in the classical split Hopkinson bar is eliminated). The quantities measured in the test are the projectile impact velocity, the force in the transmitter bar and the strain on the surface of the specimen, which is measured using the digital image correlation method with high-speed cameras. The deformation measurements show a nonuniform deformation in the specimen. To study the strain rate sensitivity properties of the specimen’s material, the experiment is simulated using an assumed material model properties which is validated by comparing the calculated and measured quantities. For aluminum 2024-T351 the results show a small strain rate sensitivity (increase of stress with strain rate) at strain rates above 10,000 s-1.

Methods and systems for coordinating predictive cruise control, engine-off coasting, and hybrid power split

The enclosed disclosure relates to hybrid vehicles and systems with an engine, a drivetrain with a clutch and a transmission, an electric machine, and a controller. The controller receives lookahead information within a lookahead window and present state information of the hybrid vehicle. The controller determines a predicted coasting opportunity exceeding a predetermined threshold within the lookahead window and determines a cruise control reference speed, a power split between the engine and the electric machine, and a timing of enabling engine-off coasting during the coasting opportunity. The controller deactivates the engine and disengages the clutch at a start of the coasting opportunity when the engine-off coasting is enabled.

System and method for sub-wavelength detection for jetting-based additive manufacturing using a split ring resonator probe

The present disclosure relates to a system for detecting and analyzing droplets of feedstock material being ejected from an additive manufacturing device. The system makes use of a split ring resonator (SRR) probe including a ring element having a gap, with the gap being positioned adjacent a path of travel of the droplets of feedstock material. An excitation signal source is used for supplying an excitation signal to the SRR probe. An analyzer analyzes signals generated by the SRR probe in response to perturbations in an electric field generated by the SRR probe as the droplets of feedstock material pass the ring element. The signals are indicative of dimensions of the droplets of feedstock material.

Application of adaptive multilevel splitting on coupled neutron-photon TRIPOLI-4{sup R} Monte Carlo simulations - 25427

In the context of radiation protection simulations, the Adaptive Multilevel Splitting (AMS) algorithm is a challenging variance reduction (VR) technique that has been recently investigated in the field of particle transport simulation. It has been implemented in the forthcoming version 11 of the Monte Carlo code TRIPOLI-4{sup R} and successfully tested in neutron-only and photon-only configurations. This paper addresses the application of the AMS algorithm to coupled simulations, and particularly to neutron-photon Monte Carlo calculations. The branching process occurring during the Monte Carlo coupled transport is taken into account in the new coupled-AMS algorithm and is explained in this paper. Two different neutron-photon configurations are then investigated, leading to a comparison of the coupled-AMS algorithm with the analog simulation on the one hand, and with the Exponential Transform (ET) on the other hand, which is the standard VR technique of TRIPOLI-4. Gains up to 30 are obtained in terms of Figure of Merit relatively to the analog simulation, which is about 4 to 6 times more efficient than the ET method for these configurations. (authors)

A Monte Carlo importance-splitting analytic benchmark - 25539

This paper describes a procedure to create analytic benchmarks for Monte Carlo variance reduction techniques that can be used to predict and/or verify the technique's mean and variance. The process uses the solutions of the first and second history-score moment equations (HSMEs) to obtain the analytic solution for the Monte Carlo mean and variance. For this work, a simple demonstration of the procedure examines the behavior of uncollided particles subject to importance splitting. In addition, a forward approach is given for calculating the same parameters. Finally, the analytic solutions are compared to both Monte Carlo calculations that directly compute the mean and variance and deterministic calculations that solve the HSMEs. All analytic and numeric results agree within the associated Monte Carlo uncertainties. (authors)

Multi-Split Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) System Building Energy Simulations Using Performance Maps

Multi-split variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems are highly energy-efficient HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) technologies that connect a single outdoor unit to multiple independent indoor terminal units using a common refrigerant circuit and a variable-speed compressor. Building energy simulations that incorporate VRF systems help model their unique operational characteristics and predict energy consumption in specific building designs. Traditionally, EnergyPlus models these systems by employing multiple sets of performance curves to characterize both individual terminal units and the outdoor unit. However, producing these curves is labor intensive and error prone, and they often do not capture all the key input and output variables. This paper introduces a novel approach that uses multi-dimensional performance maps to model VRF systems in building environments for space cooling. In this approach, performance maps are developed at the component level—separately for the outdoor unit and for each indoor terminal. The new modeling method is validated within EnergyPlus via a Python plug-in that contains a simple solver loop to coordinate the component-level, indoor, and outdoor unit maps. Furthermore, because performance maps can span more variables than traditional performance curves, they offer the opportunity to implement advanced controls, such as enhanced dehumidification and compressor modulation. A VRF air conditioner’s hardware system was modeled using the DOE/ORNL Heat Pump Design Model, which was automated to produce extensive performance maps for both the indoor and outdoor units.
