Tandem photovoltaic solar cells and increased solar energy conversion efficiency

Tandem photovoltaic cells, as proposed by Jackson (1955) to increase the efficiency of solar energy conversion, involve the construction of a system of stacked p/n homojunction photovoltaic cells composed of different semiconductors. It had been pointed out by critics, however, that the total power which could be extracted from the cells in the stack placed side by side was substantially greater than the power obtained from the stacked cells. A reexamination of the tandem cell concept in view of the development of the past few years is conducted. It is concluded that the use of tandem cell systems in flat plate collectors, as originally envisioned by Jackson, may yet become feasible as a result of the development of economically acceptable solar cells for large scale terrestrial power generation.

Effects of solar radiation pressure on the orbit of the Solar Power Satellite

The surface area-to-weight ratio of the Solar Power Satellite (SPS) is of the order of sq m/kg. Therefore, solar radiation pressure will be an important perturbation on the orbit, causing large variations in eccentricity. An analytical solution is developed for the motion of eccentricity and the line of apsides. Included is a secular term due to the earth's orbital eccentricity. Several initial conditions are considered. For some cases, the eccentricity is nearly constant over a few years. General characteristics of the motion are discussed. Long-term (30 years) effects of gravity are investigated by using a numerical integration method. Eccentricities of approximately 0.08 can be expected for uncorrected SPS orbits.

Encapsulation task of the low-cost silicon solar array project. Investigation of test methods, material properties, and processes for solar cell encapsulants

The results of an investigation of solar module encapsulation systems applicable to the Low-Cost Solar Array Project 1986 cost and performance goals are presented. Six basic construction elements were identified and their specific uses in module construction defined. A uniform coating basis was established for each element. The survey results were also useful in revealing price ranges for classes of materials and estimating the cost allocation for each element within the encapsulating cost goal. The six construction elements were considered to be substrates, superstrates, pottants, adhesives, outer covers and back covers.

Accelerated/abbreviated test methods for predicting life of solar cell encapsulants to Jet Propulsion Laboratory California Institute of Technology for the encapsulation task of the low-cost solar array project

An important principle is that encapsulants should be tested in a total array system allowing realistic interaction of components. Therefore, micromodule test specimens were fabricated with a variety of encapsulants, substrates, and types of circuitry. One common failure mode was corrosion of circuitry and solar cell metallization due to moisture penetration. Another was darkening and/or opacification of encapsulant. A test program plan was proposed. It includes multicondition accelerated exposure. Another method was hyperaccelerated photochemical exposure using a solar concentrator. It simulates 20 year of sunlight exposure in a short period of one to two weeks. The study was beneficial in identifying some cost effective encapsulants and array designs.

Energetic particles in solar flares. Chapter 4 in the proceedings of the 2nd Skylab Workshop on Solar Flares

The recent direct observational evidence for the acceleration of particles in solar flares, i.e. radio emission, bremsstrahlung X-ray emission, gamma-ray line and continuum emission, as well as direct observations of energetic electrons and ions, are discussed and intercorrelated. At least two distinct phases of acceleration of solar particles exist that can be distinguished in terms of temporal behavior, type and energy of particles accelerated and the acceleration mechanism. Bulk energization seems the likely acceleration mechanism for the first phase while Fermi mechanism is a viable candidate for the second one.

Earth orbital assessment of solar electric and solar sail propulsion systems

The earth orbital applications potential of Solar Electric (Ion Drive) and Solar Sail low-thrust propulsion systems are evaluated. Emphasis is placed on mission application in the 1980s. The two low-thrust systems are compared with each other and with two chemical propulsion Shuttle upper stages (the IUS and SSUS) expected to be available in the 1980s. The results indicate limited Earth orbital application potential for the low-thrust systems in the 1980s (primarily due to cost disadvantages). The longer term potential is viewed as more promising. Of the two systems, the Ion Drive exhibits better performance and appears to have better overall application potential.

The prediction of fast stream front arrivals at the earth on the basis of solar wind measurements at smaller solar distances

The problems involved in the prediction of the arrival of fast solar wind streams at the earth on the basis of measurements made by space probes in the region between 0.3 and 1 AU are discussed. It is shown that arrival time predictions accurate to within a few hours that can be made at least as long as the large scale conditions on the Sun are relatively stationary as observed near the time of solar minimum. However, the latitudinal extent of the respective high speed streams is found to be important for making quantitative predictions. Coronal data sufficient for locating the sources of high speed streams can improve the precision of these predictions.

Ultra-low-mass flexible planar solar arrays using 50-micron-thick solar cells

A conceptual design study has been completed which has shown the feasibility of ultra-low-mass planar solar arrays with specific power of 200 watts/kilogram. The beginning of life (BOL) power output of the array designs would be 10 kW at 1 astronomical unit (AU) and a 55C deg operating temperature. Two designs were studied: a retractable rollout design and a non-retractable fold-out. The designs employed a flexible low-mass blanket and low-mass structures. The blanket utilized 2 x 2 cm high-efficiency (13.5% at 28C deg AM0), ultra-thin (50 micron), silicon solar cells protected by thin (75 micron) plastic encapsulants. The structural design utilized the 'V'-stiffened approach which allows a lower mass boom to be used. In conjunction with the conceptual design, modules using the thin cells and plastic encapsulant were designed and fabricated.

Preliminary study of a solar selective coating system using black cobalt oxide for high temperature solar collectors

Black cobalt oxide coatings (high solar absorptance layer) were deposited on thin layers of silver or gold (low emittance layer) which had been previously deposited on oxidized (diffusion barrier layer) stainless steel substrates. The reflectance properties of these coatings were measured at various thicknesses of cobalt for integrated values of the solar and infrared spectrum. The values of absorptance and emittance were calculated from the measured reflectance values, before and after exposure in air at 650 C for approximately 1000 hours. Absorptance and emittance were interdependent functions of the weight of cobalt oxide. Also, these cobalt oxide/noble metal/oxide diffusion barrier coatings have absorptances greater than 0.90 and emittances of approximately 0.20 even after about 1000 hours at 650 C.

Evidence for the existence of nonradial solar oscillations: Solar rotation

The coherent properties of six oscillations over a two week period in which seven days of equatorial diameter measurements were analyzed, are confirmed by the addition of an extra day of data. The two large 1 (the principal order number in the spherical harmonic expansion of the eigenfunction) g-mode oscillations may be candidates for the slowly rotating mode locked structures. For the four low frequency p-modes, periodic nature is observed in the daily power levels, varying with periods of several days. This is attributed to beating between rotationally split m states for a given 1 value. Nonradial modes are a major contribution to the observed solar oscillations. The nonradial character of the observed modes allows the depth dependence of the internal solar rotation to be investigated.

Solar cycle changes in the polar solar wind

It is noted that although the 11 year solar cycle was first recognized in 1843, it is still only poorly understood. Further, while there are satisfactory models for the magnetic variations, the underlying physics is still obscure. New observations on the changing three-dimensional form of the solar wind are presented which help relate some of the modulations observed in geomagnetic activity, the ionosphere, and the flux of galactic cosmic rays.

A survey of approximately 1 MeV/nucleon solar flare particle abundances, in the Z ? 1-26 range, during the 1973-1977 solar minimum period

The abundances of the major elements over the range H-Fe in solar flare energetic particles near 1 MeV/nucleon were surveyed for a large number of flares during the period 1973-1977; observations were carried out by the IMP 8 spacecraft in interplanetary space. The survey considered two types of solar flare events: (1) large events from which the average boundaries were deduced, and (2) events which have significant abundance differences from average. In addition, two He-3-rich events with abundance features that are different from previous examples are reported: one case with no enhancements of heavy ions, and a second case in which, compared to O, the heavy-ion enhancements are confined to the charge range Si-Fe rather than the usual case in which all elements Ne-Fe are enriched.
