An improved transverse shear deformation theory for laminated antisotropic plates

An improved transverse shear deformation theory for laminated anisotropic plates under bending is presented. The theory eliminates the need for an arbitrarily chosen shear correction factor. For a general laminate with coupled bending and stretching, the constitutive equations connecting resultants with average displacements and rotations are derived. Simplified forms of these relations are also obtained for the special case of a symmetric laminate with uncoupled bending. The governing equation for this special case is obtained as a sixth-order equation for the normal displacement requiring prescription of the three physically natural bounday conditions along each edge. For the limiting case of isotropy, the present theory reduces to an improved version of Mindlin's theory. Numerical results are obtained from the present theory for an example of a laminated plate under cylindrical bending. Comparison with results from exact three-dimensional analysis shows that the present theory is more accurate than other theories of equivalent order.

Ultrasonic input-output for transmitting and receiving longitudinal transducers coupled to same face of isotropic elastic plate

The quantitative understanding of ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation parameters such as the stress wave factor were studied. Ultrasonic input/output characteristics for an isotropic elastic plate with transmitting and receiving longitudinal transducers coupled to the same face were analyzed. The asymptotic normal stress is calculated for an isotropic elastic half space subjected to a uniform harmonic normal stress applied to a circular region at the surface. The radiated stress waves are traced within the plate by considering wave reflections at the top and bottom faces. The output voltage amplitude of the receiving transducer is estimated by considering only longitudinal waves. Agreement is found between the output voltage wave packet amplitudes and times of arrival due to multiple reflections of the longitudinal waves.

The axisymmetric elasticity problem for a laminated plate containing a circular hole

The elasticity problem for a laminated thick plate which consists of two bonded dissimilar layers and which contains a circular hole is considered. The problem is formulated for arbitrary axisymmetric tractions on the hole surface by using the Love strain function. Through the expansion of the boundary conditions into Fourier series the problem is reduced to an infinite system of algebraic equations which is solved by the method of reduction. Of particular interest in the problem are the stresses along the interface as they relate to the question of delamination failure of the composite plate. These stresses are calculated and are observed to become unbounded at the hole boundary. An approximate treatment of the singular behavior of the stress state is presented and the stress intensity factors are calculated.

Solution of Von Karman's plate equation with perturbation and series summation

A nonliner series summation technique was combined with Chien's small parameter perturbation technique to solve the problem of the finite deflection of a simply supported circular plate subjected to a uniform transverse load. Problems involving finite deflections of plates with simply supported or free edges were regarded as almost intractable. The great advantage of incorporating the summation method into the solution procedure is demonstrated.

Characteristics of a microchannel plate intensifier

A telephoto optical system has been designed for imaging applications involving a use of the spectral region from 2000 to 7500 A. The optics images onto the photocathode of a multichannel plate photomultiplier (PMT). Interference filters are employed to provide spectral selectivity. The PMT consists of three microchannel plate intensifiers (MCP), arranged in a 'Z' configuration. MCP photomultiplier pulse height distributions are discussed along with aspects of spatial distribution, the electron gain pulse height distribution, and the charge loss due to edge effects. Attention is given to the electron gain pulse height distribution obtained from four anodes connected in parallel, taking into account a uniform illumination of the photocathode.

Could plate tectonics on Venus be concealed by volcanic deposits

The present investigation is supplementary to a study reported by Kaula and Phillips (1981). From an analysis of Pioneer Venus altimetry, Kaula and Phillips had inferred that any heat loss from the planet by plate tectonics must be small compared to that from the earth. However, it has been suggested by others that plate tectonic may exist on Venus, but that the expected 'square root of s' dependence of the topographic drop off is not observed because it is concealed by lava flows. The present investigation has the objective to conduct an examination whether this suggestion of concealment by lava flow is correct. On the basis of the performed analysis, it is concluded that the results obtained by Kaula and Phillips appear to be well justified.

Optimization of the performance of a tandem microchannel plate detector as a function of interplate spacing and voltage

The effect of varying the size of the gap voltage and spacing on the performance of a tandem pair of microchannel plates (MCP) is investigated. Results show that increasing the voltage in the gap increases the gain of the pair and also produces a narrower Gaussian pulse-height distribution, although beyond a critical voltage the gain of the channel plate pair is found to plateau. A model is developed which explains the nonlinear gain behavior of individual microchannels and the behavior of the electron cloud emitted from the first MCP as it spreads out between the two MCPs and hits the surface of the second. The model calculates the plateau voltage as a function of the gap size, the gain of each MCP, and the diameter of the channels, and is found to show good agreement with the observed results. It is concluded that interplate gaps of up to several millimeters can be accommodated without a significant degradation in pulse-height distribution.

Experimental study of surface pressures induced on a flat plate and a body of revolution by various dual jet configurations

The effect of the angle of a jet to a crossflow, the performance of dual jet configurations, and a jet injected from a body of revolution as opposed to a flat plate were investigated during experiments conducted in the 7x10 tunnel at NASA Ames at Velocities from 14.5 m/sec to 35.8 m/sec (47.6 to 117.4 ft/sec.). Pressure distributions are presented for single and dual jets over a range of velocity ratios from 2 to 10, spacings from 2 to 6 diameters and injection angles of 90, 75, 60, and 105 degrees. For the body of revolution tests, the ratio of the jet to body diameters was set as large (1/2) in order to be more representative of V/STOL aircraft applications. Flat plate tests involved dual jets both aligned and in side by side configurations. The effects of the various parameters and the differences between the axisymmetric and planar body geometrics on the nature, size, shape, and strength of the interaction regions on the body surfaces are shown. Some flowfield measurements are also presented, and it is shown that a simple analysis is capable of predicting the trajectories of the jets.

Frictional and morphological characteristics of ion plated soft, metallic films

Ion plated metallic films in contrast to films applied by other deposition techniques offer a lower friction coefficient, longer endurance lives and exhibit a gradual increase in friction coefficient after the film has been worn off. The friction coefficients of metallic films are affected by the degree of adherence, thickness and nucleation and growth characteristics during ion plating lead to a fine, continuous crystalline structure, which contributes to a lower friction coefficient.

Geometrically nonlinear analysis of layered composite plates and shells

A degenerated three dimensional finite element, based on the incremental total Lagrangian formulation of a three dimensional layered anisotropic medium was developed. Its use in the geometrically nonlinear, static and dynamic, analysis of layered composite plates and shells is demonstrated. A two dimenisonal finite element based on the Sanders shell theory with the von Karman (nonlinear) strains was developed. It is shown that the deflections obtained by the 2D shell element deviate from those obtained by the more accurate 3D element for deep shells. The 3D degenerated element can be used to model general shells that are not necessarily doubly curved. The 3D degenerated element is computationally more demanding than the 2D shell theory element for a given problem. It is found that the 3D element is an efficient element for the analysis of layered composite plates and shells undergoing large displacements and transient motion.

An intercomparison of NEL and DHL water flow facilities using a twin orifice plate flowmeter assembly

A 205 mm transfer standard orifice plate meter assembly, consisting of two orifice plates in series separated by a length of pipe containing a flow straightener, was calibrated in two water flow facilities. Results show that the agreement in the characteristics of such a differential pressure transfer standard package is within 0.17% over a 10:1 range from flow rates of approximately 8 to 80 l/sec. When the range over which the comparison was made was limited to that for which the calibration graphs gave straight lines, the agreement is 0.1% in 3 of the 4 calibrations (0.17% in the fourth).

Scattering by single ice needles and plates at 30 GHz

Because of the small loss tangent of ice at 30-50 GHz, significant depolarization of satellite-to-ground communication signals could occur due to the presence of cirrus clouds in their paths. It is known that cirrus clouds basically consist of ice needles and plates. Extensive calculations have been performed for the problem of scattering by a family of ice needles and plates for various length-to-width ratios ranging from 1 to 10. Scattering results with special attention to induced cross-polarized fields will be presented.

On the OLP prediction of the unstable modes of the flat plate turbulent boundary layer

The Orr et al. (OLP) stability analysis is reformulated to yield profiles from hot-wire velocity covariance data in the boundary layer of a flow over a flat plate. The proper orthogonal decomposition theorem (PODT) is used to maximize the mean square of the inner product of the velocity vector with a deterministic candidate vector function in Hilbert space. The OLP formulation couples the PODT for the eddy viscosity with a global extremum principle for the disturbance kinetic energy. Derivation of the governing equations is described analytically, as are the extraction of the mean velocity profile and the eddy viscosity. Finally, techniques for characterizing the dominant mode of the velocity field are introduced and applied to three-dimensional flow over a flat plate. Good agreement is found between the predictions, using laboratory data, and the measured energy and three-dimensional structures of the dominant eddies.
