Penny-shaped crack in a fiber-reinforced matrix

Using the slender inclusion model developed earlier the elastostatic interaction problem between a penny-shaped crack and elastic fibers in an elastic matrix is formulated. For a single set and for multiple sets of fibers oriented perpendicularly to the plane of the crack and distributed symmetrically on concentric circles the problem is reduced to a system of singular integral equations. Techniques for the regularization and for the numerical solution of the system are outlined. For various fiber geometries numerical examples are given and distribution of the stress intensity factor along the crack border is obtained. Sample results showing the distribution of the fiber stress and a measure of the fiber-matrix interface shear are also included.

Effect of fiber diameter and matrix alloys on impact-resistant boron/aluminum composites

Efforts to improve the impact resistance of B/Al are reviewed and analyzed. Nonstandard thin-sheet charpy and Izod impact tests and standard full-size Charpy impact tests were conducted on composites containing unidirectional 0.10mm, 0.14mm, and 0.20mm diameter boron fibers in 1100, 2024, 5052, and 6061 Al matrices. Impact failure modes of B/Al are proposed in an attempt to describe the mechanisms involved and to provide insight for maximizing impact resistance. The impact strength of B/Al was significantly increased by proper selection of materials and processing. The use of a ductile matrix and large diameter boron fibers gave the highest impact strengths. This combination resulted in improved energy absorption through matrix shear deformation and multiple fiber breakage.

Matrix computations in MACSYMA

Facilities built into MACSYMA for manipulating matrices with numeric or symbolic entries are described. Computations will be done exactly, keeping symbols as symbols. Topics discussed include how to form a matrix and create other matrices by transforming existing matrices within MACSYMA; arithmetic and other computation with matrices; and user control of computational processes through the use of optional variables. Two algorithms designed for sparse matrices are given. The computing times of several different ways to compute the determinant of a matrix are compared.

Analytical prediction of moisture absorption/desorption in resin matrix composites exposed to aircraft environments

The moisture absorption/desorption behavior of resin matrix composites was mathematically modeled by classical diffusion theory using an effective diffusion coefficient. Good agreement was found between calculated moisture content and published data for T300/5208 graphite fiber reinforced epoxy matrix composite. Weather Bureau data for Langley Air Force Base and Norfolk, Va., were used to calculate the amount of moisture a T300/5208 composite panel would contain if exposed outdoors. Results obtained by using average monthly weather data for several high aircraft usage locations around the world suggest that, except for desert areas, geographical locations should have only minimal effect on the moisture absorption level reached in composites. Solar radiation data together with cloud and wind information were included in the analysis to estimate an effective temperature of the composite panel during ground exposure.

Apollo 17, Station 6 boulder sample 76255 - Absolute petrology of breccia matrix and igneous clasts

The matrix of 76255 is the finest-grained, most clast-laden, impact-melt polymict breccia sampled from the Station 6 boulder. The paper speculates on how the matrix of 76255 fits into and enhances existing thermal models of breccia lithification. Emphasis is on the detailed petrology of five lithic clasts, two of which display mineralogical and textural affinities to mare basalts, while three, a gabbro, a norite, and a troctolite are considered primitive plutonic rocks.

Calorimetric studies of 7000 series aluminum alloys. I - Matrix precipitate characterization of 7075. II - Comparison of 7075, 7050, and RX720 alloys

Correlation between differential scanning calorimetry and high temperature transmission electron microscopy for the characterization of preexisting matrix precipitates in the highest-strength and overaged tempers of 7075 aluminum was demonstrated. The solid state reactions undergone by these tempers in the 20-500 C temperature range were elucidated and expressed in terms of thermodynamic and kinetic parameters. The dissolution parameters for each phase are distinguishable and serve as guidelines for a rapid characterization of the matrix microstructure of these alloys.

The composition of carbonaceous chondrite matrix

Matrix compositions of 32 of the approximately 40 known carbonaceous chondrites were analyzed using an electron probe defocussed-beam technique. Except in those chondrites that show evidence of metamorphism, matrices are compositionally similar and have correlation coefficients of +0.96 or greater. The implications of these analyses for the chemistry of individual matrix phases and for primitive solar system material are discussed.

Research on graphite reinforced glass matrix composites

The results of research for the origination of graphite-fiber reinforced glass matrix composites are presented. The method selected to form the composites consisted of pulling the graphite fiber through a slurry containing powdered glass, winding up the graphite fiber and the glass it picks up on a drum, drying, cutting into segments, loading the tape segment into a graphite die, and hot pressing. During the course of the work, composites were made with a variety of graphite fibers in a glass matrix.

Comparison of linear inversion methods by examination of the duality between iterative and inverse matrix methods

Linear numerical inversion methods applied to atmospheric remote sounding generally can be categorized in two ways: (1) iterative, and (2) inverse matrix methods. However, these two categories are not unrelated; a duality exists between them. In other words, given an iterative scheme, a corresponding inverse matrix method exists, and conversely. This duality concept is developed for the more familiar linear methods. The iterative duals are compared with the classical linear iterative approaches and their differences analyzed. The importance of the initial profile in all methods is stressed. Calculations using simulated data are made to compare accuracies and to examine the dependence of the solution on the initial profile.

Reduction of matrix wavefront for NASTRAN

The three grid point resequencing algorithms most often run by NASTRAN users are compared for their ability to reduce matrix root-mean-square (rms) wavefront, which is the most critical parameter in determining matrix decomposition time in NASTRAN. The three algorithms are Cuthill-McKee (CM), Gibbs-Poole-Stockmeyer (GPS), and Levy. The first two (CM and GPS) are in the BANDIT program, and the Levy algorithm is in WAVEFRONT. Results are presented for a diversified collection of 30 test problems ranging in size from 59 to 2680 nodes. It is concluded that GPS is exceptionally fast and, for the conditions under which the test was made, the algorithm best able to reduce rms wavefront consistently well.

Estimation of terrain iso-gradients from a stochastic range data measurement matrix

The problem of estimating terrain iso-gradients for an autonomous roving vehicle is complicated by the measurement error inherent in the range data matrix. In this paper, the in-path and cross-path slopes at each data point in the multivariable range matrix are expressed in terms of parameters at that data point and those at its surrounding points. The sensitivity in the change of these slopes - due to the errors in measurements in range, elevation angle and azimuth angle are formulated. These sensitivities are used to determine the appropriate statistics of the gradient, which are then used to describe the terrain with a known probability of accuracy.

Quaternion from rotation matrix

A quaternion is regarded as a four-parameter representation of a coordinate transformation matrix, where the four components of the quaternion are treated on an equal basis. This leads to a unified, compact, and singularity-free approach to determining the quaternion when the matrix is given.

The viscoelastic behavior of the principal compliance matrix of a unidirectional graphite/epoxy composite

The time-temperature response of the principal compliances of a unidirectional graphite/epoxy composite was determined. It is shown that two components of the compliance matrix are time and temperature independent and that the compliance matrix is symmetric for the viscoelastic composite. The time-temperature superposition principle is used to determine shift factors which are independent of fiber orientation, for fiber angles that vary from 10 D to 90 D with respect to the load direction.

Matrix perturbation for analytical model improvement

A matrix perturbation method is proposed to calculate the Jacobian matrix and to compute the new eigendata for the parameter estimation procedure. The advantages of the method are the applicability to large complex structures without knowing the analytical expressions for the mass and stiffness matrices, and a cost effective approach for the re-computation of the eigendata. This method also allows the use of other measurements such as modal forces, kinetic energy distribution, and strain energy distributions in the estimation procedure. A realistic sample problem is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Thermal exposure effects on the mechanical properties of a polycrystalline alumina fiber/aluminum matrix composite

The effects of thermal exposures and elevated test temperature on the mechanical properties of a unidirectional polycrystalline alumina fiber reinforced aluminum matrix composite were investigated. Test temperatures up to 590 K and 2500 hours exposures at 590 K did not significantly affect fiber dominated properties but did severely degrade matrix dominated properties. Fiber strength, degraded by the fabrication process, was restored by post fabrication thermal exposures. Possible degradation mechanisms are discussed.

New phyllosilicate types in a carbonaceous chondrite matrix

Observations of new types of layer silicates in the crystalline regions of the matrix of a carbonaceous chondrite are reported. Ion-thinned sections of the Murchison meteorite were observed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Images obtained of patterns of fringe spacings of 4.9 and 7.3 A are interpreted as resulting from ordered and disordered sequences of brucite-like and serpentine-like layers, respectively. The temperature and pressure conditions of phyllosilicate formation in the Murchison matrix are discussed in light of the suggested crysotile serpentine and brucite layers and evidence of Fe and Al in the layered intergrowths.

A study of the effects of state transition matrix approximations

The effects of using an approximate state transition matrix in orbit estimation are investigated. The approximate state transition matrix results when higher order geopotential terms in the equations of motion are ignored in the formation of the variational equations. Two methods of orbit estimation are considered: the differential correction procedure (DC) and the extended Kalman filter (EKF). The system used for the study is the Research & Development version of the Goddard Trajectory Determination System. The effects of the approximation are analyzed on a number of orbits. These orbits of various inclinations and semimajor axes. Other parameters studied include geopotential models and DC arc length.

High Temperature Resin Matrix Composites for Aerospace Structures

Accomplishments and the outlook for graphite-polyimide composite structures are briefly outlined. Laminates, skin-stiffened and honeycomb sandwich panels, chopped fiber moldings, and structural components were fabricated with Celion/LARC-160 and Celion/PMR-15 composite materials. Interlaminar shear and flexure strength data obtained on as-fabricated specimens and specimens that were exposed for 125 hours at 589 K indicate that epoxy sized and polyimide sized Celion graphite fibers exhibit essentially the same behavior in a PMR-15 matrix composite. Analyses and tests of graphite-polyimide compression and shear panels indicate that utilization in moderately loaded applications offers the potential for achieving a 30 to 50 percent reduction in structural mass compared to conventional aluminum panels. Data on effects of moisture, temperature, thermal cycling, and shuttle fluids on mechanical properties indicate that both LARC-160 and PMR-15 are suitable matrix materials for a graphite-polyimide aft body flap. No technical road blocks to building a graphite-polyimide composite aft body flap are identified.
