Development of biaxial test fixture includes cryogenic application

Test fixture has the capability of producing biaxial stress fields in test specimens to the point of failure. It determines biaxial stress by dividing the applied load by the net cross section. With modification it can evaluate materials, design concepts, and production hardware at cryogenic temperatures.

High temperature ion source

Modified Nielsen-type ion source produces temperatures up to 1500 degrees C and permits obtaining a plasma from low vapor-pressure materials. Design minimizes thermal stresses. Dual-filament discharge chamber achieves the high temperature and provides independent control of the heating and electron emission functions.

Nonmetallic-materials development for spacecraft applications

The development, characteristics, and applications of nonmetallic materials used for spacecraft structures are discussed. The effects of extremes in environment as a factor in material selection are considered. Material design parameters are especially complex because of the requirements imposed for additional fire safety and resistance to the free space and lunar surface environment.

Textile mechanical elements in aerospace vehicle parachute systems

Materials, design considerations, and design details for textile mechanical elements used in aerospace vehicle parachute systems are briefly reviewed. Friction burns are noted as a major cause of parachute system failures. The friction burn hazard can be minimized by designing for predeployment and deployment sequence control with textile mechanical restraints. Two basic restraint designs (restraint loops and line ties) are discussed and various applications of the designs shown.

Filament-wound graphite/epoxy rocket motor case

The fabrication procedures are described for a filament-wound rocket motor case, approximately 56 cm long x 71 cm diameter, utilizing high tensile strength graphite fibers. The process utilized Fiberite Hy-E-1330B prepreg tape which consists of Courtaulds HTS fibers in a temperature-sensitive epoxy matrix. This fabrication effort, with resultant design, material and process recommendations, substantiates the manufacturing feasibility of graphite/epoxy rocket motor cases in the 56 cm x 71 cm size range.

Survey of current component reliability problems and methods for prevention.

The current reliability problems related to electronic components and microcircuits are presented in this paper. Specific process controls, design, materials, application constraints, destructive testing, electrical tests, and procedures for implementation are recommended to improve the reliability of selected electronic components.

Liquid and gaseous oxygen safety review

Materials used in oxygen systems and allowable oxygen environments are specified for each material. Design criteria, cleaning procedures and quality control methods are covered. Guidelines for protection against hazards involved with production, transportation, storage and use of oxygen are presented. Study also lists extensive references.
