A multiple-scattering approach to transient electromagnetic interaction with plasmas

A multiple-scattering method is described which is applicable to the transient plasma problem concerning the interaction between transient electromagnetic waves and plasmas. The method starts with the time-dependent wave fields scattered by a linear electric dipole when illuminated by a transient plane wave. It avoids the use of Fourier transform methods and provides additional physical insight into the origin of the frequency-dispersive properties of material media. The results are applicable only to cold plasmas since spatial dispersion is neglected, implying that effects due to thermal velocities of electrons - such as incoherent scatter - are not covered by the theory. The advantages of the method for initiation of the student into transient electromagnetics in dispersive media are identified as conceptual simplicity and computational simplicity. The entire analysis is in the time domain.

Scattering of light from particulate surfaces. I - A laboratory assessment of multiple-scattering effects

In planetary applications it is sometimes important to know the degree to which multiple scattering is influencing the photometric properties of a surface. An investigation is conducted concerning the point at which the single-scattering approximation used in the theory developed by Hapke (1963) and Irvine (1966) breaks down. It is shown that the Hapke-Irvine photometric function provides an adequate representation of the scattering properties of particulate surfaces whose geometric albedos (or normal reflectances) do not exceed 0.3. An experiment is conducted to estimate the normal reflectance below which the Hapke-Irvine equation considered provides an adequate representation of the scattering properties of a particulate surface. The investigation makes use of a set of samples which were prepared by mixing magnesium oxide and charcoal powders. The samples have a range in normal reflectance from 0.04 to 1.04.

A multiple pulse zero crossing NMR technique, and its application to F-19 chemical shift measurements in solids

A simple multiple-pulse 'zero crossing technique' for accurately determining the first moment of a solid-state NMR spectrum is introduced. This technique was applied to obtain the F-19 chemical shift versus pressure curves up to 5 kbar for single crystals of CaF2 (0.29 + or - 0.02 ppm/kbar) and BaF2 (0.62 + or - 0.05 ppm/kbar). Results at ambient temperature and pressure are also reported for a number of other fluorine compounds. Because of its high data rate, this technique is potentially several orders of magnitude more sensitive than similar CW methods.

Evolution of rotating interstellar clouds. III - On the formation of multiple star systems

The evolution of a rotating massive cloud, starting at interstellar densities, continuing through a series of intermediate fragmentation stages, and ending with stellar multiple systems with components near the main sequence, is outlined. The scenario is based on results of two- and three-dimensional numerical hydrodynamical calculations of collapsing clouds. Transfer of spin angular momentum primarily into orbital motion is assumed to occur at each fragmentation stage. Expected initial conditions in the cloud lead to final fragments which have in many cases the masses and angular momenta appropriate to observed main-sequence systems. Other points of comparison with observations are briefly noted.

A study of multiple-shaker modal survey testing

The principal objective was to examine and to assess the practical value of a method of multiple-shaker sinusoidal modal vibration testing known as Asher's method. Numerical studies which simulate the application of Asher's method and a unique experimental implementation of the method were completed. Another objective of the research was to develop and to demonstrate with numerical simulation a quantitative method for determining from transfer function data the number of dominant modes of vibration in sinusoidal structural response.

A model of human event detection in multiple process monitoring situations

It is proposed that human decision making in many multi-task situations might be modeled in terms of the manner in which the human detects events related to his tasks and the manner in which he allocates his attention among his tasks once he feels events have occurred. A model of human event detection performance in such a situation is presented. An assumption of the model is that, in attempting to detect events, the human generates the probability that events have occurred. Discriminant analysis is used to model the human's generation of these probabilities. An experimental study of human event detection performance in a multiple process monitoring situation is described and the application of the event detection model to this situation is addressed. The experimental study employed a situation in which subjects simulataneously monitored several dynamic processes for the occurrence of events and made yes/no decisions on the presence of events in each process. Input to the event detection model of the information displayed to the experimental subjects allows comparison of the model's performance with the performance of the subjects.

Lightweight multiple output converter development

A high frequency, multiple output power conditioner was developed and breadboarded using an eight-stage capacitor diode voltage multiplier to provide +1200 Vdc, and a three-stage for -350 Vdc. In addition, two rectifier bridges were capacitively coupled to the eight-stage multiplier to obtain 0.5 and 0.65 a dc constant current outputs referenced to +1200 Vdc. Total power was 120 watts, with an overall efficiency of 85 percent at the 80 kHz operating frequency. All outputs were regulated to three percent or better, with complete short circuit protection. The power conditioner component weight and efficiency were compared to the equivalent four outputs of the 10 kHz conditioner for the 8 cm ion engine. Weight reduction for the four outputs was 557 grams; extrapolated in the same ratio to all nine outputs, it would be 1100 to 1400 grams.

Multiple Discipline science assessment

Various science disciplines were examined to determine where and when it is appropriate to include their objectives in the planning of planetary missions. The disciplines considered are solar astronomy, stellar and galactic astronomy, solar physics, cosmology and gravitational physics, the geosciences and the applied sciences. For each discipline, science objectives are identified which could provide a multiple discipline opportunity utilizing either a single spacecraft or two spacecraft delivered by a single launch vehicle. Opportunities using a common engineering system are also considered. The most promising opportunities identified include observations of solar images and relativistic effects using the Mercury orbiter; collection of samples exposed to solar radiation using the Mars surface sample return; studies of interstellar neutral H and He, magnetic fields, cosmic rays, and solar physics during Pluto or Neptune flybys; using the Mars orbiter to obtain solar images from 0.2 AU synchronous or from 90 deg orbit; and the study of the structure and composition of the atmosphere using atmospheric probes and remotely piloted vehicles.

Performance of a multiple venturi fuel-air preparation system

Spatial fuel-air distributions, degree of vaporization, and pressure drop were measured 16.5 cm downstream of the fuel injection plane of a multiple Venturi tube fuel injector. Tests were performed in a 12 cm tubular duct. Test conditions were: a pressure of 0.3 MPa, inlet air temperature from 400 to 800K, air velocities of 10 and 20 m/s, and fuel-air ratios of 0.010 and 0.020. The fuel was Diesel #2. Spatial fuel-air distributions were within + or - 20 percent of the mean at inlet air temperatures above 450K. At an inlet air temperature of 400K, the fuel-air distribution was measured when a 50 percent blockage plate was placed 9.2 cm upstream of the fuel injection plane to distort the inlet air velocity fuel injection plane to distort the inlet air velocity profile. Vaporization of the fuel was 50 percent complete at an inlet air temperature of 400K and the percentage increased linearly with temperature to complete vaporization at 600K. The pressure drop was 3 percent at the design point which was three times greater than the designed value and the single tube experiment value. No autoignition or flashback was observed at the conditions tested.

A summation and inhibition model of annoyance response to multiple community noise sources

A model of annoyance due to combined noise sources was developed. The model provides for the summation of the subjective magnitudes of annoyance due to the separate noise sources and for the inhibition of the subjective magnitudes of each source by the presence of the other noise sources. The inhibition process is assumed to mathematically obey a power-group transformation. The results of an experiment in which subjects judged the annoyance of 15 minute sessions of combined aircraft and with several other models of combined source annoyance. These comparisons indicated that the model developed herein provides better qualitative and quantitative agreement with experimental responses than the other models. The application of the model to multiple community noises is discussed.

Multiple speed expandable bit synchronizer

A multiple speed bit synchronizer was designed for installation in an inertial navigation system data decoder to extract non-return-to-zero level data and clock signal from biphase level data. The circuit automatically senses one of four pre-determined biphase data rates and synchronizes the proper clock rate to the data. Through a simple expansion of the basic design, synchronization of more than four binarily related data rates can be accomplished. The design provides an easily adaptable, low cost, low power alternative to external bit synchronizers with additional savings in size and weight.

Multiple-satellite studies of magnetospheric substorms - Plasma sheet recovery and the poleward leap of auroral zone activity

Particle observations from pairs of satellites (OGO 5 and Vela 4A and 5A) during 28 plasma sheet thickening events indicate that thickening of the nighttime plasma sheet during substorms occurs in two main stages. The early stage involves single or multiple expansions of the near-earth plasma sheet at the onset of substorm expansions (Pi 2 bursts) on the ground, while the later stage of plasma sheet recovery starts near the time of maximum auroral zone bay activity. This stage is characterized by a large-scale thickening toward higher latitudes that occurs over a broad azimuthal scale and at heights that range from the ionosphere to beyond the Vela orbit. A detailed analysis of two-satellite observations during eight plasma sheet recoveries is presented, and events that occurred within 5 min in widely separated locations at small distances from the tail's midplane as well as events that occurred concurrently in the Vela orbit and at high latitudes in the near-earth region are revealed.

Calculation of Pareto-optimal solutions to multiple-objective problems using threshold-of-acceptability constraints

A technique is presented for the calculation of Pareto-optimal solutions to a multiple-objective constrained optimization problem by solving a series of single-objective problems. Threshold-of-acceptability constraints are placed on the objective functions at each stage to both limit the area of search and to mathematically guarantee convergence to a Pareto optimum.

Inverse multiple scattering problems. III - Inadequacy of certain limb darkening and phase curves for retrieving atmospheric information and limitations of approximate scattering models

The paper considers three complementary inverse multiple scattering problems relating to a uniquely defined atmospheric scattering model. Consideration is given to the appropriateness, for data inversion purposes, of intensities observed in diffuse reflection under a variety of experimental conditions; the uniqueness of the inverse solution is investigated. It is found that light curves representing monotonic variations, such as limb darkening curves and phase curves for a planetary (e.g., Venus) disk center are unsuitable for inferring atmospheric and scattering parameters.

The annoyance of multiple noisy events

A total of 24 subjects (17 M, 7 F) was tested in an experimental study of annoyance rating of multiple noisy events (30 sets of noise bursts). The scaling technique known as functional measurement was used to determine whether annoyance integrates additively over events and if so, to measure the power law exponent which relates the levels of the events to the additive scale values. To this end, groups of three noises were presented at three levels in a factorial arrangement to check the additivity hypothesis and to estimate the scaling function. Also, a series of sets of noises of constant level but varying in set size were considered. The functional measurement of annoyance ratings of sets of three simulated flyovers showed that the integration of annoyance can be represented as an additive process in terms of scale values that are power functions of the sound power with a power-law exponent near 0.7.

Multiple silicon ribbon growth by EFG

The background and progress to date of EFG ribbon growth for solar cell applications are briefly reviewed. The design and operation of a multiple ribbon-per-operator manufacturing system are then described. Results are presented of cost studies of this system at three stages of development. In the latter stage, believed to be attainable by 1986, conversion costs for polycrystalline silicon into wafers are attained which are consistent with manufacture of photovoltaic systems at $0.50 per peak watt. Principal technological problems in the ribbon growth process are discussed.
