Fresnel diffraction plates are simple and inexpensive

Fresnel plate demonstrates diffraction phenomena simply and inexpensively. A large number of identical diffracting apertures are made in random orientation on photographic film. When a small source of light is viewed through the plate, the diffraction pattern typical of the diffracting aperture is readily seen.

Fast-response atmospheric-pollutant monitor

Fast infrared spectrometer measures atmospheric C0, CH4, and HC1 over range of 1 to 12 ppm. With modifications it could measure other pollutants and use natural light as source. Cell filled with sample to be measured filters out spectral lines of interest. Infrared beam passes through rotating cell holder that produces chopped signals at two frequencies. Difference in signal amplitudes depends on amount of test gas in sample. Signal processing circuitry amplifies and separates test-gas and reference signals.

A model for explaining some features of shuttle glow

A solid state model is proposed which hopefully removes some of the objections to excited atoms being sources for light emanating from surfaces. Glow features are discussed in terms of excited oxygen atoms impinged on the surface, although other species could be treated similarly. Band formation, excited lifetime shortening and glow color are discussed in terms of this model. The model's inability to explain glow emanating above surfaces indicates a necessity for other mechanisms to satisfy this requirements. Several ways of testing the model are described.

Method and means for generation of tunable laser sidebands in the far-infrared region

A method for generating tunable far-infrared radiation is described. The apparatus includes a Schottky-barrier diode which has one side coupled through a conductor to a waveguide that carries a tunable microwave frequency; the diode has an opposite side which is coupled through a radiating whisker to a bias source. Infrared light is directed at the diode, and infrared light with tunable sidebands is radiated by the whisker through an open space to a reflector. The original infrared is separated from a tunable infrared sideband by a polarizing Michelson interferometer.

Specular, diffuse and polarized imagery of an oat canopy

Light, polarized by specular reflection, has been found to be an important part of the light scattered by several measured plant canopies. The authors investigate for one canopy the relative importance of specularly reflected sunlight, specularly reflected light from other sources including skylight, and diffusely upwelling light. Polarization images are used to gain increased understanding of the radiation transfer process in a plant canopy. Analysis of the results suggests that properly analyzed polarized remotely sensed data, acquired under specific atmospheric conditions by a specially designed sensor, potentially provide measures of physiological and morphological states of plants in a canopy.

Tethered Remote Manipulator

Remote-manipulator concept for retrieval or inspection of objects in outer space applied to underwater or in tanks of hazardous chemicals. System includes tether head on outer end of tether cable wound on motor-driven takeup reel. Head includes mounting plate with four canted thrustors facing rearward, solid-state camera with patterned sources of light facing forward, and pneumatic inflatable end effector. Also includes device to cut head loose in emergency. Intended for use in places beyond reach of jointed rigid-arm manipulator and where unsafe or impractical to send humans.

Novel laser gain and time-resolved FTIR studies of photochemistry

Several techniques are discussed which can be used to explore laboratory photochemical processes and kinetics relevant to planetary atmospheres; these include time-resolved laser gain-versus-absorption spectroscopy and time-resolved Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) emission studies. The laser gain-versus-absorption method employed tunable diode and F-center lasers to determine the yields of excited photofragments and their kinetics. The time-resolved FTIR technique synchronizes the sweep of a commercial FTIR with a pulsed source of light to obtain emission spectra of novel transient species in the infrared. These methods are presently being employed to investigate molecular photodissociation, the yields of excited states of fragments, their subsequent reaction kinetics, Doppler velocity distributions, and velocity-changing collisions of translationally fast atoms. Such techniques may be employed in future investigations of planetary atmospheres, for example to study polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons related to cometary emissions, to analyze acetylene decomposition products and reactions, and to determine spectral features in the near infrared and infrared wavelength regions for planetary molecules and clusters.

Electro-optical Position-Measuring System

Electro-optical system developed to measure five components of coordinates representing position and orientation of model in test section of wind tunnel. Located entirely outside test section, uses small lasers as sources of light and self-scanning linear photodiode arrays (LPDA's) as sensing elements. With improvements in measuring ranges, adapted for use in other aerodynamic applications.

Optoelectronic Ranging Sensor For Robotic Vehicle

Proposed optoelectronic ranging system for robotic vehicle provides information on distances to points in natural scene by use of pinhole mask to sample texture in scene and determines whether portion of scene corresponds to each pinhole in focus (whether it lies at focal distance). System has no moving parts, requires little computation, and consumes only few watts of power. Passive in sense that it does not include any artificial sources of light, relying instead on sunlight reflected from scene.

SEI power source alternatives for rovers and other multi-kWe distributed surface applications

To support the Space Exploration Initiative (SEI), a study was performed to investigate power system alternatives for the rover vehicles and servicers that were subsequently generated for each of these rovers and servicers, candidate power sources incorporating various power generation and energy storage technologies were identified. The technologies were those believed most appropriate to the SEI missions, and included solar, electrochemical, and isotope systems. The candidates were characterized with respect to system mass, deployed area, and volume. For each of the missions a preliminary selection was made. Results of this study depict the available power sources in light of mission requirements as they are currently defined.

Double-Current-Confined CSP Laser

Improved channeled-substrate-planar (CSP) lasers that emit at wavelengths between 860 and 880 nm grown by liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE). Exhibit record high output powers and efficiencies, attained without sacrifice of desirable characteristics of lasers. In fabrication, second reverse-bias p/n junction incorporated to reduce required current. By incorporating two reverse-bias junctions in CSP structure, one doubly confines current. Lasers used eventually as sources of light in intersatellite communications systems and, specifically, NASA Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) System.

Photosynthetic accessory pigments - Evidence for the influence of phycoerythrin on the submarine light field

Upwelled water-leaving spectral radiances and the submarine light-field source are theorized to have the physical scattering and absorption effects of photosynthetic accessory pigments. A laser is employed to induce phycoerythrin pigment fluorescence, and the presence of the photosynthetic accessory pigment is measured in oceanic waters with a spectral fluorescence method. Experimental data from active-passive correlation spectroscopy demonstrate that water-leaving spectral radiances of about 600 nm are highly correlated with phycoerythrin pigment fluorescence. Because the data on the phycoerythrin and chlorophyll fluorescences are entered randomly in the correlation the results are considered unambiguous. An estimate of the photopigment is derived that agrees with measurements of its laser-induced fluorescence.
