Heterogeneous chemistry related to Antarctic ozone depletion: Reaction of ClONO2 and N2O5 on ice surfaces

Laboratory studies of heterogeneous reactions of possible importance for Antarctic ozone depletion were performed. In particular, the reactions of chlorine nitrate (ClONO2) and dinitrogen pentoxide (N2O5) were investigated on ice and HCl/ice surfaces. These reactions occur on the surfaces of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) over Antarctica. One reaction transforms the stable chlorine reservoir species (ClONO2 and HCl) into photochemically active chlorine in the form of HOCl and Cl2. Condensation of HNO3 in the reactions removes odd nitrogen from the stratosphere, a requirement in nearly all models of Antarctic ozone depletion. Other reactions may also be important for Antarctic ozone depletion. Like the reactions of chlorine nitrate, these reactions deplete odd nitrogen through HNO3 condensation. In addition, one reaction converts a stable chlorine reservior species (HCl) into photochemically active chlorine (ClNO2). These reactions were studied with a modified version of a Knudsen cell flow reactor.

Impact of heterogeneous reactions on stratospheric chemistry of the Arctic

The possible depletion of ozone due to heterogeneous reactions occurring in Arctic polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) is fundamentally different from the Antarctic situation. PSCs in the Arctic are relatively short-lived and occur over limited regions of the Arctic stratosphere. The Arctic situation is examined using a model which calculates photochemical processes as a function of longitude in air circulating with fixed velocity around the pole at fixed pressure level and latitude. The model allows sunlight to vary diurnally and PSCs to occur in specified subregions of the domain. Measurements of chemical species including HCl, ClO, NO2 and HNO3 downwind from a PSC should show obvious changes compared to measurements in air unaffected by clouds. These species concentrations are found to be sensitive to sticking coefficients, cloud characteristics including particle number density and surface area, and to the PSC exposure time.

Influence of low-gravity solidification on heterogeneous nucleation in stable iron-carbon alloys

The effect of gravity on the processes of nucleation and growth of Fe-C alloys during directional solidification was investigated in experiments in which inoculated and uninoculated samples of an alloy of the gray iron type were solidified on ground (1 g) and under the low-gravity (low-g) and high-gravity (high-g) conditions obtained by aircraft parabolic flights. It was found that a higher number of grains was obtained during solidification in high-g condition, due to higher convection in high-g. It was demonstrated that grain multiplication due to convection can contribute up to 23 percent of the total number of grains resulting from heterogeneous nucleation of uninoculated samples. For the case of inoculated samples, it was found that the contribution of the convection-induced nucleation can be as high as 30 percent, but can be zero at very low or very high grain numbers.

Stability of the Martian atmosphere - Possible role of heterogeneous chemistry

A new hypothesis is proposed for recycling Martian CO to CO2. The same hypothesis can satisfactorily explain the recently observed depletion in CO in the middle atmosphere of Mars. The mechanism involves oxidation of CO through heterogeneous chemistry in the presence of aerosols. It is further suggested that H2O ice aerosols in the atmosphere of Mars are particularly effective in this process. The thrust for suggesting this mechanism came from the extensive presence of aerosols in the Martian atmosphere and relatively low CO mixing ratios in the low to middle atmosphere detected by the Phobos spacecraft.

The effect of multiple nucleation events on heterogeneous nucleation rates

The effect of multiple nucleation events on the overall heterogeneous nucleation rate is studied using a simple model based on coupled consecutive chemical reactions. It is found that the decay of the nucleation curve and the saturation time depend on the maximum number of nuclei which can be accomodated on a particle.

Heterogeneous reactions on nitric acid trihydrate

The first direct measurements are reported of the reaction probabilities at stratospheric temperatures for two important heterogeneous reactions on nitric acid trihydrate (NAT), the compound which makes up the predominant, type I form of polar stratospheric cloud (PSC). Sticking coefficients and solubilities of HCl and NAT, which are important in modeling physicochemical processes in the stratosphere, are also reported. The results show that the conversion of the chlorine reservoir species in the stratosphere to photochemically active forms can occur within a few days of the first appearance of type I PSCs during the polar winter.

Dynamic resource allocation scheme for distributed heterogeneous computer systems

This invention relates to a resource allocation in computer systems, and more particularly, to a method and associated apparatus for shortening response time and improving efficiency of a heterogeneous distributed networked computer system by reallocating the jobs queued up for busy nodes to idle, or less-busy nodes. In accordance with the algorithm (SIDA for short), the load-sharing is initiated by the server device in a manner such that extra overhead in not imposed on the system during heavily-loaded conditions. The algorithm employed in the present invention uses a dual-mode, server-initiated approach. Jobs are transferred from heavily burdened nodes (i.e., over a high threshold limit) to low burdened nodes at the initiation of the receiving node when: (1) a job finishes at a node which is burdened below a pre-established threshold level, or (2) a node is idle for a period of time as established by a wakeup timer at the node. The invention uses a combination of the local queue length and the local service rate ratio at each node as the workload indicator.

Heterogeneous distributed databases: A case study

Alternatives are reviewed for accessing distributed heterogeneous databases and a recommended solution is proposed. The current study is limited to the Automated Information Systems Center at the Naval Sea Combat Systems Engineering Station at Norfolk, VA. This center maintains two databases located on Digital Equipment Corporation's VAX computers running under the VMS operating system. The first data base, ICMS, resides on a VAX11/780 and has been implemented using VAX DBMS, a CODASYL based system. The second database, CSA, resides on a VAX 6460 and has been implemented using the ORACLE relational database management system (RDBMS). Both databases are used for configuration management within the U.S. Navy. Different customer bases are supported by each database. ICMS tracks U.S. Navy ships and major systems (anti-sub, sonar, etc.). Even though the major systems on ships and submarines have totally different functions, some of the equipment within the major systems are common to both ships and submarines.

The influence of polar heterogeneous processes on reactive chlorine at middle latitudes - Three dimensional model implications

Three-dimensional model calculations with the NASA/GSFC chemistry and transport model have been designed to consider the impact of heterogeneous processes occurring on polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) in the Arctic vortex on the HCl distribution. By examining the HCl concentration for a calculation with PSCs relative to a calculation with gas phase chemistry only, the impact of polar processing on reactive chlorine species at middle latitudes is inferred. Results from the chemistry and transport model reproduce basic features of the ClO measurements (Toohey et al., 1991), which were made on the ferry flights of the ER-2 from Stavanger, Norway to Moffett Field, California via Wallops Island, Virginia on February 20 and 21, 1989. The model indicates that perturbed air which is contained within the polar vortex during winter is not homogeneously mixed, and that the ferry flights were made through air with the largest conversion of HCl to reactive chlorine that is seen at middle latitudes.

Modelling a nickel-cadmium battery as a heterogeneous device

A common failure mode for nickel-cadmium batteries involves a nonuniform degradation of the performance of individual cells. This behavior is manifested as a divergence in voltage during cyclic operation. An empirically based performance model is presented which simulates a battery composed of heterogeneous cells. Battery performance is studied as a function of the distribution of cell performance characteristics. The technique has successfully predicted cell voltage divergence behavior observed during cycle life testing. It is noted that this work enhances understanding of life-test results and may improve life-test design and data analysis.

Role of heterogeneous conversion of N2O5 on sulphate aerosols in global ozone losses

The reaction rate of N2O5 on sulphate aerosols is included in a model to predict global ozone loss and the column abundances of atmospheric gases. Because the reaction of N2O5 and the aerosols can take place in the stratospheric sulphate aerosol layer, it is included in the 2D model so that the results can be compared to abundances derived from satellite data and ground-based measurements. The N2O5/sulphate reaction is the only heterogeneous reaction in the model, in which aerosol loading is assumed to be constant and only diurnal values are examined. The decadal ozone trends resulting from calculations based on the model are found to be closer to the observed values. An important conclusion is that measurements of OH, ClO, HNO3, NO, and NO2 in the region of about 14-25 km are needed to examine significant changes in their abundances resulting from the inclusion of the N2O5/sulphate aerosol reaction.

Heat transfer analysis of fuel assemblies in a heterogeneous gas core nuclear rocket

Heat transfer problems of a heterogeneous gaseous core nuclear rocket were studied. The reactor core consists of 1.5-m long hexagonal fuel assemblies filled with pressurized uranium tetrafluoride (UF4) gas. The fuel gas temperature ranges from 3500 to 7000 K at a nominal operating condition of 40 atm. Each fuel assembly has seven coolant tubes, through which hydrogen propellant flows. The propellant temperature is not constrained by the fuel temperature but by the maximum temperature of the graphite coolant tube. For a core achieving a fission power density of 1000 MW/cu m, the propellant core exit temperature can be as high as 3200 K. The physical size of a 1250 MW gaseous core nuclear rocket is comparable with that of a NERVA-type solid core nuclear rocket. The engine can deliver a specific impulse of 1020 seconds and a thrust of 330 kN.

Nd-142/Nd-144 in SNCs and early differentiation of a heterogeneous Martian mantle

Sm/Nd correlated variations in Nd-142/Nd-144 have been observed for mineral phases of achondrites from decay of live Sm-146 in the early solar system. Crystallization ages of shergottites-nakhlites-Chassigny (SNC) meteorites are less than or = 1.3 Ga, so variations of Nd-142/Nd-144 among mineral phases of the SNC's are not expected. However, if SNC's were derived from source reservoirs of differing Sm/Nd ratios, established while Sm-146 was still alive, and which remained isolated except for magma extraction, then variations in Nd-142/Nd-144 would exist among individual SNC meteorites. Rb-Sr and U-Pb isotopic data for the shergottites imply differentiation of their parent planet approximately 4.6 Ga ago. The confirmation of the conclusion that the nakhlites and shergottites were derived from different source regions, and that, consequently, the shergottite parent body (SPB) mantle was heterogeneous is presented.

Homogeneous and heterogeneous chemistry along air parcel trajectories

The study of coupled heterogeneous and homogeneous chemistry due to polar stratospheric clouds (PSC's) using Lagrangian parcel trajectories for interpretation of the Airborne Arctic Stratosphere Experiment (AASE) is discussed. This approach represents an attempt to quantitatively model the physical and chemical perturbation to stratospheric composition due to formation of PSC's using the fullest possible representation of the relevant processes. Further, the meteorological fields from the United Kingdom Meteorological office global model were used to deduce potential vorticity and inferred regions of PSC's as an input to flight planning during AASE.

Extensions to the Parallel Real-Time Artificial Intelligence System (PRAIS) for fault-tolerant heterogeneous cycle-stealing reasoning

Extensions to an architecture for real-time, distributed (parallel) knowledge-based systems called the Parallel Real-time Artificial Intelligence System (PRAIS) are discussed. PRAIS strives for transparently parallelizing production (rule-based) systems, even under real-time constraints. PRAIS accomplished these goals (presented at the first annual C Language Integrated Production System (CLIPS) conference) by incorporating a dynamic task scheduler, operating system extensions for fact handling, and message-passing among multiple copies of CLIPS executing on a virtual blackboard. This distributed knowledge-based system tool uses the portability of CLIPS and common message-passing protocols to operate over a heterogeneous network of processors. Results using the original PRAIS architecture over a network of Sun 3's, Sun 4's and VAX's are presented. Mechanisms using the producer-consumer model to extend the architecture for fault-tolerance and distributed truth maintenance initiation are also discussed.

Heterogeneous photocatalytic oxidation of atmospheric trace contaminants

A two year study to examine the feasibility of using heterogeneous photocatalysis for spacecraft air purification was begun at North Carolina State University on November 1, 1990. The original grant proposal included examination of the rates of destruction of anticipated spacecraft-generated air contaminants, including alcohols, aldehydes, chlorinated compounds, as well as trace levels of volatile compounds containing nitrogen, sulfur, and silicon. The progress made in the second six month period of 5/1/91-11/1/91 is discussed.

Scaling properties of induction times in heterogeneous nucleation

The heterogeneous-to-homogeneous induction time ratio is obtained as a function of the contact angle in the asymptotic limit of a high nucleation barrier. Model-dependent corrections to t(ind) are investigated, particularly in cases of the Turnbull-Fisher model used in numerical simulations by Greer et al. (1990).
