Heat transfer in laminar wall boundary layer within noncentered unsteady expansion wave

The paper summarizes results of theoretical and experimental investigations of wall temperature change and heat transfer in the laminar boundary layer formed within noncentered unsteady expansion waves in shock tubes. The study is restricted to a class of noncentered plane waves which have one key feature in common with centered waves, i.e., the first derivatives of the inviscid flow quantities have values or are discontinuous at the wavehead. The wall temperature is calculated implicitly by matching the local heat transfer rates of gas and wall thermal boundary layers. Experimentally, the wall temperature was measured using a thin-film resistance thermometer and heat transfer was then deduced using a one-dimensional unsteady heat conduction equation.

Investigation of the thermal control of instruments mounted in the Space Shuttle cargo bay

Results are presented for an investigation intended to examine the orbital averaged thermal response of a number of instruments, each being representative of a class of scientific instrumentation, when they are individually mounted on pallets and operated in the cargo bay of the Shuttle. The discussion covers mainly the Shuttle Orbiter thermal models, the solar viewing instrument, and the high-energy instrument. One approach to thermal insulation of smaller instruments is to provide a thermal canister insulated from the cargo bay and equipped with variable conductance heat pipes. Two approaches are proposed for larger instruments. One approach is to provide a thermal curtain across the top of the pallet which shields the pallet cavity from direct sunlight, while the second approach is to provide a fluid system to transfer heat from a specified location on an instrument to either a space viewing radiator on the pallet or instrument or the orbiter cooling system. These thermal control design concepts represent several ideas for standard reusable thermal control systems.

Heating of the solar chromosphere and corona. I - Generalized inhomogeneous wave equation for magnetoacoustic motions

The generalized inhomogeneous wave equation that governs magnetoacoustic, vortical, and thermal motions in compressible fluids and that is applicable to the problem of heating of the solar chromosphere and corona is obtained. The effects of kinematic and bulk viscosity, heat conduction, Joule dissipation, and magnetic diffusivity are included. Under the usual assumptions, the generalized wave equation reduces to the well-known equations of Lighthill, Kulsrud, Phillips, and others. The major problems encountered in applying Lighthill's (1952) mechanism to sound generation in turbulent media are reviewed for both the subsonic and supersonic cases.

Evaporative cooling of flare plasma

A one-dimensional loop model for the evaporative cooling of the coronal flare plasma was investigated. Conductive losses dominated radiative cooling, and the evaporative velocities were small compared to the sound speed. The profile and evolution of the temperature were calculated. The model was in agreement with soft X-ray observations on the evolution of flare temperatures and emission measures. The effect of evaporation was to greatly reduce the conductive heat flux into the chromosphere and to enhance the EUV emission from the coronal flare plasma.

Study of a fail-safe abort system for an actively cooled hypersonic aircraft: Computer program documentation

The Fail-Safe Abort System TEMPerature Analysis Program, (FASTEMP), user's manual is presented. This program was used to analyze fail-safe abort systems for an actively cooled hypersonic aircraft. FASTEMP analyzes the steady state or transient temperature response of a thermal model defined in rectangular, cylindrical, conical and/or spherical coordinate system. FASTEMP provides the user with a large selection of subroutines for heat transfer calculations. The various modes of heat transfer available from these subroutines are: heat storage, conduction, radiation, heat addition or generation, convection, and fluid flow.

Heat transfer in cooled guide vanes

A numerical study to determine the temperature distribution in the guide vanes of a radial inflow turbine is presented. A computer program has been developed to calculate the temperature distribution when the vanes are cooled internally using a combination of impingement and film cooling techniques. The study is based on the use of the finite difference method in a two dimensional heat conduction problem. The results are then compared to determine the best cooling configuration for a certain coolant to primary mass flow ratio.

The evaporation of spherical clouds in a hot gas. II - Effects of radiation

The effects of radiation on the evaporation of spherical clouds in a hot medium are considered. The critical cloud radius at which radiative losses balance conductive heating is determined as a function of the external temperature and density. Smaller clouds evaporate, and larger clouds condense. The conditions under which the surfaces of the clouds may be detected are discussed. Net radiative losses for evaporating clouds are calculated, and an effective cooling function for a cloudy medium is obtained. The results may be applied to clouds in supernova remnants, in the interstellar medium, and in clusters of galaxies.

On-orbit performance of the 12 GHz, 200 watt transmitter experiment package for CTS

Performance characteristics from on-orbit tests of the Transmitter Experiment Package (TEP) for the Communications Technology Satellite (CTS) are presented. The TEP consists of a Power Processing System (PPS), an Output Stage Tube (OST), and a Variable Conductance Heat Pipe System (VCHPS), all of which are described. The OST is a coupled-cavity traveling-wave tube with a multistage depressed collector and a stepped velocity-tapered slow-wave structure for efficiency enhancement. It has an RF output power of 240 W and an overall efficiency of 51.5% at a center band frequency of 12.080 GHz. The PPS provides the required operating voltages, regulation, control, and protection for the OST. It has a measured dc-dc conversion efficiency of 86.5% to 88.5%. The VCHPS consists of a fin radiator and three dual-artery stainless steel heat pipes using methanol and a mixture of inert gases. Test results presented include efficiencies, RF output power, frequency response, and performance with single and multiple (two) carriers frequency-modulated by video signals.

Gas-path seal material

Composite sealant reduces frictional heating, wear, and leakage. Sealant is needed to reduce wear of rotating compressor-blade tips if they rub against stationary engine casing. Nickel substrate with plasmasprayed aluminum top layer was evaluated. Results showed little wear on top layer took place; layer itself remained intact and provided heat conduction pathway from rub surface.

Analysis of strong-interaction dynamic stall for laminar flow on airfoils

A compressible Navier-Stokes solution procedure is applied to the flow about an isolated airfoil. Two major problem areas were investigated. The first area is that of developing a coordinate system and an initial step in this direction has been taken. An airfoil coordinate system obtained from specification of discrete data points developed and the heat conduction equation has been solved in this system. Efforts required to allow the Navier-Stokes equations to be solved in this system are discussed. The second problem area is that of obtaining flow field solutions. Solutions for the flow about a circular cylinder and an isolated airfoil are presented. In the former case, the prediction is shown to be in good agreement with data.

Electrostatically unstable heat flow during solar flares and its consequences

This paper examines some of the consequences of an electrostatically unstable return current associated with heat conduction during a solar flare. It is noted that an electrostatically unstable return current will lead to strong hydrodynamic effects and more rapid magnetic-field thermalization if reconnection is the source of primary energy release during a solar flare.

Evaporative cooling of flare plasma

We investigate a one-dimensional loop model for the evaporative cooling of the coronal flare plasma. The important assumptions are that conductive losses dominate radiative cooling and that the evaporative velocities are small compared with the sound speed. We calculate the profile and evolution of the temperature and verify the accuracy of our assumptions for plasma parameters typical of flare regions. The model is in agreement with soft X-ray observations on the evolution of flare temperatures and emission measures. The effect of evaporation is to greatly reduce the conductive heat flux into the chromosphere and to enhance the EUV emission from the coronal flare plasma.
