Parametric Mechanism Design Through Numerical Optimization and Physics Simulation

Design-Build-Test approaches for developing spaceflight hardware are prohibitively time and cost intensive and often lead to suboptimal mechanism designs. Approaches that couple machine learning and high-fidelity physics simulation could eliminate the need for hardware prototyping and dramatically accelerate the engineering design cycle, ultimately reducing cost. This work presents a modular NASA-developed toolchain to optimize hardware mechanisms in a virtual environment using numerical optimization and multi-body physics simulation. The toolchain enables multi-objective optimization, generates parametric CAD files that can be further post-processed by an end user, and can be expanded to optimize full systems and non-mechanical parameters such as feedback control variables. We demonstrate the toolchain through an independently verifiable design problem that optimizes wheel radius to achieve a desired linear velocity in a rigid-body physics environment when the wheel rotates at a constant angular speed, and then post-process the parametric CAD file of the optimal design generated by the tool before ultimately manufacturing it via 3D printing. We end with a discussion of how the toolchain can incorporate other analysis tools, including finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, and granular media simulations.

Comparison of Micromechanics Theories for Modeling Discontinuous Long Fiber Reinforced Composites

Two micromechanics theories, the high fidelity generalized method of cells and Carrera Unified Formulation, are used to model a repeating unit cell of a discrete long fiber composite. The models are used to predict the effective properties of a single fiber with varying fiber-to-fiber end gap lengths, as well as the local stresses in the fiber and matrix. Both models produced similar results and demonstrated that they could capture the complex local load transfer due to the shear lag effect.

Parametric Optimization of Rigid Wheels for Planetary Surface Mobility Applications

Design-Build-Test approaches for spaceflight hardware are time and cost intensive, which can result in suboptimal mechanism designs. Optimization-based approaches that utilize high-fidelity models and physics simulation could overcome these limitations while simultaneously speeding up the mechanical design process and reducing cost. In this work, we present a toolchain that enables the multi-objective optimization of rigid rover wheels for planetary surface mobility applications. The toolchain uses Chrono’s Continuous Representation Model (CRM) functionality to simulate granular soil and performs multi-objective parametric optimization on candidate rover wheels to meet a desired performance criterion. The resulting wheel design is then evaluated experimentally using a single-wheel testbed. We end with a discussion of how the toolchain can be extended to simultaneously co-optimize other system parameters, such as system power consumption and feedback control gains.

Integrated Mission Simulation for Long Term Space Flight

The problems of evaluating pilot performance, pilot training, and the integration of the man-machine system for proper functioning become increasingly difficult as the length of projected space flights increases. Further, actual in-flight experience becomes harder to obtain and the major means for training and evaluation becomes simulation. The first major source of difficulty in any simulation stems from a basic requirement of leaning theory: that for increased proficiency of performance to occur within any biologically capable system, the stimuli which are the bases for the expected behavior must be presented in an amenable form to the learner. Further, the sequence of presentation of the pertinent stimuli must be such that the learner can form the appropriate concepts and interactions required for the ultimate use of the learned material. It can then be seen that two basic factors of learning complex skills are: 1) Fidelity of simulation of pertinent stimuli. 2) Appropriate sequencing of stimuli during learning for proper concept formation.

The characterization of facsimile camera systems for lunar and planetary surface exploration

Advantages of facsimile camera systems are reviewed for imagery of lunar and planetary surfaces from stationary or stopped remotely controlled vehicles. They include: better geometric fidelity than television systems, more picture elements per frame, ability to take single frame panoramic pictures, a very high contrast ratio within a picture, a choice of one or more narrow-band spectral responses over a wide possible range, image transmission over a low bit-rate communications channel without storage, very low power, small size, low weight, and ruggedizability to meet space flight requirements. Systems of this kind are under development for the 1975 Viking Martian lander, and have been used by the Soviets on Lunas and Lunokhod laboratory and field evaluation of a completed facsimile camera system is presented. The applicability of facsimile cameras to lunar and planetary rovers is demonstrated.

Experiment M410: Color patch photography

A slate that supported four calibrated color targets was photographed during Gemini 10 mission extravehicular activity to determine if existing outdoor-type color films can reproduce colored objects accurately in the space environment. The experiment resulted in the acquisition of sufficient information to confirm that objects can be photographed in space with good color fidelity by the use of existing materials. Available color film is balanced to the solar spectrum in space, and the effect of ultraviolet energy on film degradation appears to be negligible.

Electrocardiogram transmission - The state of the art.

A comparative analysis of available clinical EKG telemetry systems was conducted. Although present day electrocardiogram diagnosis requires a high degree of measurement accuracy, there exists wide variations in the performance characteristics of the various telemeters marketed today necessitating careful consideration of specifications prior to procurement. The authors have endeavored to provide the physicians with a clear understanding, in terms of the effects on the electrocardiogram, of the factors he must evaluate in order to ensure high fidelity EKG reproduction. A tabulation of comparative parameter values for each unit obtained from manufacturers' specifications and substantiated by standardized performance tests conducted in our laboratory is presented.
