Measuring Nd(III) Solution Concentration in the Presence of Interfering Er(III) and Cu(II) Ions: A Partial Least Squares Analysis of Ultraviolet–Visible Spectra

Optical spectroscopy is a powerful characterization tool with applications ranging from fundamental studies to real-time process monitoring. However, it can be difficult to apply to complex samples that contain interfering analytes which are common in processing streams. Multivariate (chemometric) analysis has been examined for providing selectivity and accuracy to the analysis of optical spectra and expanding its potential applications. Here we will discuss chemometric modeling with an in-depth comparison to more simplistic analysis approaches and outline how chemometric modeling works while exploring the limits on modeling accuracy. Understanding the limitations of the chemometric model can provide better analytical assessment regarding the accuracy and precision of the analytical result. This will be explored in the context of UV–Vis absorbance of neodymium (Nd 3+ ) in the presence of interferents, erbium (Er 3+ ) and copper (Cu 2+ ) under conditions simulating the liquid–liquid extraction approach used to recycle plutonium (Pu) and uranium (U) in used nuclear fuel worldwide. Finally, the selected chemometric model, partial least squares regression, accurately quantifies Nd 3+ with a low percentage error in the presence of interfering analytes and even under conditions that the training set does not describe.

Updates to the n+ 63,65 Cu Angular Distributions for Critical Experiments [Slides]

This work updates the evaluation of n+ 63,65 Cu for neutron energies in the resolved resonance region (RRR) and slightly higher energies. The updates strive to improve the statistical properties of the resonance parameters and the continuity of the evaluation between the RRR and the high-energy region while preserving or improving critical assembly benchmark performance. We will review our work on the resonance parameters and present the current status of our angular distribution analysis.

Updates and Validation for the n+ 63,65 Cu Cross Sections [Slides]

The RRR and URR parameters for 63,65 Cu have been optimized to transmission and capture data. Several data sets have been newly incorporated in this evaluation. The angular distribution parameters have been adopted from differential measurements, as was done in ENDF/B-V. The performance of this evaluation in the integral benchmark calculations is favorable, and the validation is ongoing.

Roles of Metal Promoters (Co, Cu, K, Ni, Zn, and Cs) in Microwave-Assisted Methane Dehydroaromatization to Aromatics Over Mo-Supported HZSM-5

Microwave (MW)-assisted methane dehydroaromatization (MDHA) offers methane conversion to more value-added aromatics, thus generating revenue and mitigating the flaring emission. We previously found that Mo/HZSM-5, despite offering higher aromatic yield, experienced rapid deactivation under microwave irradiation. Adding metal promoters is one of the solutions to not only modulate the reaction/deactivation pathways, but potentially modify the heating properties of modified Mo/HZSM-5 under MW-assisted MDHA. In this study, Mo/HZSM-5 was modified with various metal promoters (Co, Cu, K, Ni, Zn, and Cs) and their catalytic performance was assessed and correlated with their physical and chemical properties upon adding metal promoters.

ORNL FY2024 Nuclear Data Evaluation Contributions: Cu, La, N, and Ta [Slides]

63,65 Cu angular distributions resolved for ENDF/B-VIII.1, consistent with both differential data and integral benchmark performance. 139 La RRR and URR evaluations will be merged with the LANL high energy evaluation, and to be submitted to the future ENDF-B release (post-VIII.1). 14 N RRR evaluation is planned to produce n+ 14 N, p+ 14 C, and a+ 11 B contributions to be submitted to the future ENDF-B release (post-VIII.1). 181 Ta covariances repaired and reported as intended in an errata to ENDF/B-VIII.1.

Investigation of the Effect of Framework Flexibility on Adsorption in SIFSIX-3-Cu using a Machine-Learned Force Field

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a promising class of adsorbents. The performance of MOF sorbents relies on high selectivity and low regeneration energy. This work focuses on the use of machine learned force fields (MLFFs) to model adsorption in a flexible MOF, SIFSIX-3-Cu. A DeePMD-based MLFF was trained to reproduce DFT (PBE+D3) energies, forces, and stresses, using an iterative sampling scheme combining sampling based on molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo, and geometry optimization to capture both attractive and repulsive regions of the potential energy surface. Flexibility of the MOF was explicitly included in this model. Hybrid Monte Carlo/molecular dynamics (MC/MD) simulations using the MLFF predicted adsorption isotherms in good agreement with experimental data for a range of pressures (40 Pa – 104 Pa) in contrast to rigid models, which overpredict CO2 adsorption at low pressures. The improvement was the result of a description of the variability of fluorine-fluorine diagonal distances at adsorption sites. This detailed description of flexibility afforded by the MLFF resulted in more accurate predictions adsorption isotherms when compared to the experimentally measured values. These results underscore the importance of including framework flexibility when modeling adsorption phenomena in MOFs, particularly for low pressure applications and provide a robust procedure for training MLFF models for MOFs.
