Unlocking Autonomous Telescopes through Reinforcement Learning: An Offline Framework and Insights from a Case Study

Optimizing observational astronomy campaigns is becoming a complex and expensive task for next-generation telescopes, where manual planning of observations may tend to reach suboptimal results in terms of optimization.Reinforcement Learning (RL) has been well-demonstrated as a valuable approach for training autonomous systems, and it may provide the basis for self-driving telescopes capable of scanning the sky and optimizing the scheduling for astronomy campaigns. We have developed a framework for the optimization of telescope scheduling using RL techniques, based on a dataset containing data on a discrete set of sky locations that the telescope should visit, and a reward metric. We compared several RL algorithms applied to an offline simulation dataset based at the Stone Edge Observatory, considering a discrete set of sky locations to visit and using “t-effective” as a reward metric, a measure of the quality of the data.Deep Q-Networks (DQNs), belonging to the class of value-based methods, have shown remarkable success in the optimization of astronomical observations in our dataset. In the full environment, the average reward value in each state was found to be 92%±5% of the maximum possible reward, while on the test set it resulted in 87%±9% of the maximum possible reward.

Metocean Reference Station Best Practices: MORS-1 Case Study

The goal of a Metocean Reference Station should be to aid both near-term development of the offshore wind energy industry as well as long-term climate and energy research. Capitalizing on existing shared-use facilities wherever possible, reference stations should provide data valued by industry users as well as research users in a cost-effective way. Cost-effectiveness is a critical component of developing a reference site, as the real value of the site's data collection efforts is the length of the time series it is able to sustain. This report seeks to lay out the best practices toward developing and maintaining metocean reference stations in the United States. The best practices described here focus on suitable platforms, sensor integration, and long-term operations of the reference station itself, as best practices of operations for individual sensors for the research community or validation enterprises focused on industrial use of metocean data are well described in the literature. This work focuses on potential stations in the United States because the market for reference data and validation facilities is less well defined in the United States, given the young age of the rapidly emerging offshore wind energy industry here.

A Case Study of Luminaire-Level Lighting Control: Lighting the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA) Office in Portland, OR

What happens when advanced lighting and control systems are installed in the real world? Are the advantages and energy savings realized? By observing the design, installation, commissioning, and ongoing use of connected lighting systems in real-world settings, it is possible to identify the strengths, challenges, and points of human-technology interaction that may be new or unfamiliar to those responsible for implementing or maintaining the lighting system. Ultimately, understanding and experiencing each stakeholder’s interaction with the technology can allow the research team to synthesize feedback for manufacturers, improve industry understanding of the technology, and increase adoption. The Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA) office in Portland, OR, is a single-floor installation that puts tunable-white, interoperability, and luminaire-level advanced control capabilities to the test. Compared to simpler, “out-of-the-box” systems that minimize field-adjustable settings, the system utilized in this space allowed for granular field adjustments which required the system specifier, client, and programming agent to make additional decisions regarding system operation while the system was being programmed. This report communicates the observational findings from the installation, programming, and ongoing operation of an advanced office LLLC system.

Nodal Capacity Expansion Modeling with ReEDS: A Case Study of the RTS-GMLC Test System

Test systems play an important role in power systems analysis and are used extensively for a wide range of purposes like reliability analysis, production cost modeling, studying the impacts of load shifting, and many more. These test systems have continued to evolve over the years to keep pace with changing system compositions due to technology and policy changes. In this work, we apply the Regional Energy Deployment System (ReEDS) model, a large-scale capacity expansion model (CEM), on the nodal RTS-GMLC system to perform capacity expansion of the bus-level test system. This work both demonstrates that a large-scale CEM can successfully be applied to nodal systems, and that the CEM can allow a test system to be evolved to meet desired criteria. The process allowed the coupling of CEM data not available in the test system (such as capital costs) with test system data to provide plausible system evolutions in line with scenario specifications.

W-SMART Phase-I Pathway Analysis: Case Study - City of Boston, MA

The purpose of this study is to synthesize stakeholder and research learnings to date by exercising PNNL’s Waste - Sustainability Monitoring of Alternative Reuse Options over Time (W-SMART) sustainability protocol for the Greater Boston region. This report serves as a foundation for future discussion and project work to characterize the costs, risks, impacts, tradeoffs, and highest uses for major waste streams. This analysis differs from previous work by 1) incorporating results of a newly completed detailed resource assessment for the Greater Boston area; (2) providing a head-to-head pathway comparison without any policy supports (e.g., carbon or energy credits); and (3) focusing on locally relevant critical waste streams and reuse strategies, by assessing the cost-effectiveness of two complimentary pathways, including (a) expanded incineration of municipal solid waste (MSW) at existing treatment sites to produce baseload electricity, and (b) the conversion of blended municipal wastewater solids (i.e., sludge) and non-residential food waste to produce liquid transportation biofuels at a proposed hydrothermal liquefaction facility in Quincy, MA. The performance of each pathway is also compared to assumed business-as-usual waste management practices as a baseline.

Observing Atmospheric Refraction with Stellar Occultation: Case Study with data from Tyvak-0172

Understanding the upper atmosphere is vital to successful hypersonic flight. Perturbations in temperature and density due to phenomena such as gravity waves and turbulence strongly affect the performance of a hypersonic vehicle (Roy and Blottner, 2006). Observing upper atmospheric conditions from the ground is difficult due to the interference of clouds, so most observations are gathered with weather balloons. However, balloons can only travel up to about 35 km from the Earth surface. Therefore, we turn to remote sensing for atmospheric conditions above 35 km.

Multi-Scale 3D Imaging for Machine Learning Property Upscaling: Mt. Simon Sandstone Case Study

Petrographic properties of principal target reservoirs for carbon sequestration, such as the Mt. Simon Sandstone, are relevant to broad interest groups. The Mt. Simon Sandstone is a deep, saline, regionally extensive Cambrian sandstone, overlain by low permeability sealing formations, making it one of the viable geologic carbon storage reservoirs in the Midwestern US. Its thickness (exceeding 2400 ft in some localities), depth, and lateral extent, combined with high porosity and permeability make it a high-priority target of multiple ongoing geologic carbon sequestration efforts in the United States of America. The National Energy Technology Laboratory in Morgantown, West Virginia, has been engaged in characterization efforts of the Mt. Simon for over a decade, with a strong focus on Computed Tomographic data acquisition. Data generated during this period has been hitherto not accessible to the public. This archival effort focused on preservation of historical CT data and associated metadata, and facilitating their accessibility, culminating with the publication of the entire dataset on NETL’s Energy Data eXchange (EDX) and the associated Gill et. al (2024) paper.

Storage Sizing and Placement Simulation: Quick-Start Case Study User’s Guide

The Storage Sizing and Placement Simulation (SSIM) application allows a user to define the possible sizes and locations of energy storage elements on an existing grid model defined in OpenDSS. Given these possibilities, the software will automatically search through them and attempt to determine which configurations result in the best overall grid performance. This quick-start guide will go through, in detail, the creation of an SSIM model based on a modified version of the IEEE 34 bus test feeder system. There are two primary parts of this document. The first is a complete list of instructions with little-to-no explanation of the meanings of the actions requested. The second is a detailed description of each input and action stating the intent and effect of each. There are links between the two sections.
