Measurement of e + e − → η J / ψ cross section from s = 3.808 GeV to 4.951 GeV

Using data samples with an integrated luminosity of 22.42 fb − 1 collected by the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, we measure the cross sections of the e + e − → η J / ψ process at center-of-mass energies from 3.808 to 4.951 GeV. Three structures are observed in the line shape of the measured cross sections. A maximum-likelihood fit with ψ ( 4040 ) , two additional resonances, and a nonresonant component are performed. The mass and width of the first additional state are ( 4219.7 ± 2.5 ± 4.5 ) MeV / c 2 and ( 80.7 ± 4.4 ± 1.4 ) MeV , respectively, consistent with the ψ ( 4230 ) . For the second state, the mass and width are ( 4386 ± 13 ± 17 ) MeV / c 2 and ( 177 ± 32 ± 13 ) MeV , respectively, consistent with the ψ ( 4360 ) . The first uncertainties are statistical, and the second ones are systematic. The statistical significance of ψ ( 4040 ) is 8.0 σ and those for ψ ( 4230 ) and ψ ( 4360 ) are more than 10.0 σ . Measurements of ϒ states production in 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 500 GeV with STAR: Cross sections, ratios, and multiplicity dependence

We report measurements of ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆), ϒ⁡(2⁢𝑆) and ϒ⁡(3⁢𝑆) production in 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =500 GeV by the STAR experiment in year 2011, corresponding to an integrated luminosity ℒ int = 13 pb −1 . The results provide precise cross sections, transverse momentum (𝑝 T ) and rapidity (𝑦) spectra, as well as cross section ratios for 𝑝 T < 10 GeV/c and |𝑦| < 1. The dependence of the ϒ yield on charged particle multiplicity has also been measured, offering new insights into the mechanisms of quarkonium production. The data are compared to various theoretical models: the color evaporation model (CEM) accurately describes the ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆) production, while the color glass condensate+nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (CGC+NRQCD) model overestimates the data, particularly at low 𝑝 T . Conversely, the color singlet model (CSM) underestimates the rapidity dependence. These discrepancies highlight the need for further development in understanding the production dynamics of heavy quarkonia in high-energy hadronic collisions. The trend in the multiplicity dependence is consistent with CGC/saturation and string percolation models or ϒ production happening in multiple parton interactions modeled by PYTHIA 8.

Status Report of Joint RPI/ORNL NCSP Task for Thermal Neutron Total Cross Section Measurements

A new cold neutron moderator system was developed and constructed at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Gaerttner Linear Accelerator. This system was then used to measure the neutron total cross section in the thermal energy range for polyethylene, polystyrene, Lucite, and yttrium hydride. In tandem with these measurements, a fitting procedure was developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to vary computationally simulated phonon density of states until a fit with differential and integral data was achieved. This model, combined with the new RPI total cross section data, was used to generate thermal scattering law files for the materials measured at RPI.

Gravitational lensing frequencies - Galaxy cross-sections and selection effects

Four issues - (1) the best currently available data on the galaxy velocity-dispersion distribution, (2) the effects of finite core radii potential ellipticity on lensing cross sections, (3) the predicted distribution of lens image separations compared to observational angular resolutions, and (4) the preferential inclusion of lens systems in flux limited samples - are considered in order to facilitate more realistic predictions of multiple image galaxy-quasar lensing frequencies. It is found that (1) the SIS lensing parameter F equals 0.047 +/-0.019 with almost 90 percent contributed by E and S0 galaxies, (2) observed E and S0 core radii are remarkably small, yielding a factor of less than about 2 reduction in total lensing cross sections, (3) 50 percent of galaxy-quasar lenses have image separations greater than about 1.3 arcsec, and (4) amplification bias factors are large and must be carefully taken into account. It is concluded that flat universe models excessively dominated by the cosmological constant are not favored by the small observed galaxy-quasar lensing rate.

Measurement of the inclusive $t\bar{t}$ production cross section in the lepton + jets channel in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector using support vector machines

A measurement of the top quark pair-production cross section in the lepton + jets decay channel is presented. It is based on 4.6 fb -1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV pp collision data collected during 2011 by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. A three-class, multidimensional event classifier based on support vector machines is used to differentiate $t\bar{t}$ events from backgrounds. The $t\bar{t}$ production cross section is found to be σ $t\bar{t}$ = 168.5 ± 0.7(stat)$^{+6.2}_{-5.9}$(syst)$^{+ 3.4}_{-3.2}$(lumi) pb. In conclusion, the result is consistent with the Standard Model prediction based on QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order.

Cross-section measurements for the production of a Z boson in association with high-transverse-momentum jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Cross-section measurements for a $Z$ boson produced in association with high-transverse-momentum jets ($p_T$ ≥ 100 GeV) and decaying into a charged-lepton pair ($e^+$$e^–$, $µ^+$$µ^–$) are presented. The measurements are performed using proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Measurements of angular correlations between the $Z$ boson and the closest jet are performed in events with at least one jet with $p_T$ ≥ 500 GeV. Event topologies of particular interest are the collinear emission of a $Z$ boson in dijet events and a boosted $Z$ boson recoiling against a jet. Fiducial cross sections are compared with state-of-the-art theoretical predictions. The data are found to agree with next-to-nextto-leading-order predictions by NNLOjet and with the next-to-leading-order multi-leg generators MadGraph5_aMC@NLO and Sherpa.

Twist-three cross-sections in deeply virtual Compton scattering

We study the deeply virtual Compton scattering process with both twist-two and twist-three Compton form factors and present our cross-sections formulas with all polarization configurations. While the twist-three contributions are generally assumed to be negligible in the literature due to the kinematical suppression, we compare them with the twist-two ones at typical JLab 6 GeV and 12 GeV kinematics as well as EIC kinematics and show their kinematical suppression explicitly, justifying the leading-twist approximation made in the literature. In addition, we also estimate the twist-three Compton form factors using Wandzura-Wilczek relations and inputs of twist-two generalized parton distributions based on a reggeized spectator model. With those estimated Compton form factors, we analyze the kinematical behavior of twist-two and twist-three cross-sections in a wide range of kinematics, and discuss the optimal regions for separating the leading-twist effects from the higher-twist ones.

Study of SIDIS Unpolarized Cross Sections from a 3 He Target with the Solenoidal Large Intensity Device at JLab

In this paper we present a detailed impact study of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering unpolarized cross sections' measurements using the proposed SoLID apparatus at Jefferson Lab. This type of data, collected at large Bjorken $x_{bj}$, moderate values of $Q^2$ and small values of the transverse momentum of produced hadrons, $P_{hT}$, allows to study transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution and fragmentation functions in a still poorly explored region. We present the projected results for charged light mesons based on simulated data. For the azimuthal-angle integrated cross sections we adopt the TMD framework up to the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (N3LL) accuracy, while a simpler TMD parton model is employed for the study of azimuthal angular dependencies.

Recent improvement of spallation cross section calculations, applicable to cosmic ray physics

About half of the cosmic ray nuclei heavier than helium have suffered nuclear transformations while colliding with the interstellar gas. The semiempirical calculations developed for calculating the still unmeasured cross sections had errors of about 25-50 per cent, depending on the target mass interval. Recent precise measurements have permitted significant improvements in the calculation of cross sections. Several such improvements are discussed. A status report on work-in-progress is presented on a general modification of the spallation equation parameters.

A generalized wind turbine cross section as a reduced-order model to gain insights in blade aeroelastic challenges

In this work, we present an approach to study the aeroelastic stability of a wind turbine by focusing on the dynamics of a blade cross section. We present a methodology to obtain a reduced-order model of the blade dynamics in the form of generalized cross-sectional quantities that approximates the aerodynamic and structural properties of the full blade. The motivation for the work is to gain a physical understanding of the influence of aerodynamic models such as dynamic wake and dynamic stall on the frequency and damping of the structure using a reduced-order model with low computational cost. The model may be coupled to two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics softwares or engineering unsteady airfoil aerodynamics models accounting for dynamic wake and dynamic stall. In the latter case, we can obtain monolithic state-space forms of the aeroelastic system of equations, which simplifies the determination of the modal parameters and therefore the study of stability. The work investigates wind turbines in operation or at standstill, where vortex-induced vibrations and stall-induced vibrations, respectively, might be an issue. The implementation is made available as part of the open-source Python package WELIB and as part of the open-source unsteady aerodynamic driver of OpenFAST.

Measurement of inclusive and differential cross sections of single top quark production in association with a W boson in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV

The first measurement of the inclusive and normalised differential cross sections of single top quark production in association with a W boson in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13.6 TeV is presented. The data were recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2022, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 34.7 fb −1 . The analysed events contain one muon and one electron in the final state. For the inclusive measurement, multivariate discriminants exploiting the kinematic properties of the events are used to separate the signal from the dominant top quark-antiquark production background. A cross section of $82.3\pm 2.1{\left(\textrm{stat}\right)}_{-9.7}^{+9.9}\left(\textrm{syst}\right)\pm 3.3\left(\textrm{lumi}\right)$ pb is obtained, consistent with the predictions of the standard model. A fiducial region is defined according to the detector acceptance to perform the differential measurements. The resulting differential distributions are unfolded to particle level and show good agreement with the predictions at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

Measurement of B$_\mathrm{c}$(2S)$^+$ and B$_\mathrm{c}^*$(2S)$^+$ cross section ratios in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

The ratios of the Bc(2S)+ to Bc+, Bc*(2S)+ to Bc+, and Bc*(2S)+ to Bc(2S)+ production cross sections are measured in proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV, using a data sample collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 143 fb-1. The three measurements are made in the Bc+ meson phase space region defined by the transverse momentum pT>15 GeV and absolute rapidity |y|<2.4, with the excited Bc(*)(2S)+ states reconstructed through the Bc(*)+π+π−, followed by the Bc+→J/ψπ+ and J/ψ→μ+μ− decays. The Bc(2S)+ to Bc+, Bc*(2S)+ to Bc+, and Bc*(2S)+ to Bc(2S)+ cross section ratios, including the unknown Bc(*)(2S)+→Bc(*)+π+π− branching fractions, are (3.47±0.63(stat)±0.33(syst))%, (4.69±0.71(stat)±0.56(syst))%, and 1.35±0.32(stat)±0.09(syst), respectively. None of these ratios shows a significant dependence on the pT or |y| of the Bc+ meson. The normalized dipion invariant mass distributions from the decays Bc(*)(2S)+→Bc(*)+π+π− are also reported.

Measurements of the differential cross sections of the production of Z + jets and $\gamma$ + jets and of Z boson emission collinear with a jet in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

Measurements of the differential cross sections of Z + jets and γ + jets production, and their ratio, are presented as a function of the boson transverse momentum. Measurements are also presented of the angular distribution between the Z boson and the closest jet. The analysis is based on pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{−1}$ recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The results, corrected for detector effects, are compared with various theoretical predictions. In general, the predictions at higher orders in perturbation theory show better agreement with the measurements. This work provides the first measurement of the ratio of the differential cross sections of Z + jets and γ + jets production at 13 TeV, as well as the first direct measurement of Z bosons emitted collinearly with a jet.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Macrosegregation Caused by Convection Associated with Directional Solidification through Cross-Section Change

Al-7 wt% Si and Pb-6 wt% Sb alloy samples were directionally solidified (DS), with liquid above and solid below and gravity pointing down, in cylindrical graphite crucibles through an abrupt cross-section change. Fraction eutectic distribution in the microstructure, primary dendrite spacing and primary dendrite trunk diameters have been measured in the DS samples in the vicinity of section change in order to examine the effect of convection associated with the combined influence of thermosolutal factors and solidification shrinkage. It is observed that convection not only produces extensive radial and axial macrosegregation near cross-section change, it also affects the dendritic array morphology. Primary dendrite spacing and primary dendrite trunk diameter, both, are influenced by this convection. In addition to the experimental results, preliminary results from a numerical model which includes solidification shrinkage and thermosolutal convection in the mushy zone in its analysis will also be presented

Benchmarking of ENDF/B-VIII.0 cross sections for LWR ex-core transport applications

ENDF/B-VIII.0 cross section data is benchmarked on a simple Monte-Carlo model representative of the ex-core geometry of a PWR used for reactor vessel neutron fluence calculations. The benchmarking indicates that the ENDF/B-VIII.0 results show large differences as compared to previous evaluations, which have been extensively compared to measured data. This exercise suggests that ENDF/B-VIII.0 nuclear data is not suitable for ex-core LWR radiation transport applications. Evaluators are aware of the problems with the ENDF/B-VIII.0 evaluation of iron and work is underway to improve the evaluations for an upcoming release.
