Comment on predissociation of O2 in the B state

Theoretical models and experimental data on the predissociation of O2 in the B state are analyzed, with a focus on the results reported by Wodtke et al. (1988). Absorption cross sections in the (11,0) Schumann-Runge band of O2 at 79 K (Yoshino et al., 1987) are matched to curves synthesized from lower fine-structure components for 5Pi(u) and 3Pi(u) predissociative mechanisms. It is concluded that the 3Pi(u) predominance proposed by Wodtke et al. is not justified by the data. In a reply by Wodtke and Huwel, the need for further studies to clarify the apparent discrepancies between absorption and emission spectroscopy is indicated.

Modeling techniques in a parallelizing compiler for the B-HIVE multiprocessor system

The parallelizing compiler for the B-HIVE loosely-coupled multiprocessor system uses a medium grain model to minimize the communication overhead. A medium grain model is shown to be an optimum way of merging fine grain operations into parallel tasks such that the parallelism obtained at the grain level is retained and communication overhead is decreased. A new communication model is introduced in this paper, allowing additional overlap between computation and communication. Simulation results indicate that the medium grain communication model shows promise for automatic parallelization for a loosely-coupled multiprocessor system.

The UV silicon spectra of early B stars

Equivalent widths of UV silicon lines obtained from high dispersion IUE SWP spectra for a sample of 37 mid- to early B stars are presented. These are compared to other atmospheric diagnostics and to model atmosphere calculations. It is found that some of the UV silicon lines are extremely sensitive to stellar temperature and luminosity over the range B5-B0.5, or roughly a factor of two in effective temperature. The potential usefulness of these lines is stressed, and it is demonstrated that they could determine temperatures and surface gravities to the same accuracy as other commonly used diagnostics once adequate models become available. Although the available models fail to predict the quantitative behavior of the line strengths, they do, in most instances, describe their qualitative behavior. Since the existing models are somewhat out of date, the results suggest that models based upon more complete opacity tables may be quite reliable.

Application of the Schwinger multichannel formulation to electron-impact excitation of the b 3Sigma(+) state of CO

The Chi 1Sigma - b 3Sigma(+) transition of CO is described using the Schwinger multichannel method in the two-state approximation, in an energy range from threshold to 20 eV. The resonance structure is analyzed by performing a partial-wave decomposition and the resonance positions are established based on the typical discontinuous behavior in the K-matrix elements as well as the pi radian change in the partial-wave eigenphases. The resonance behavior is related to the concept of core-excited resonances and the 'grandparent' model of resonances. The results are related to the formation of the negative ion by carrying out bound-state calculations on the (5 sigma)(3 s sigma)-squared core-excited Rydberg state of CO(-), and the position is found to agree well with the low-energy resonance positions.

Ultraviolet interstellar absorption toward HD 163522, a halo star at 9 kiloparsecs in the direction l = 350 deg and b = -9 deg

UV interstellar absorption line measurements obtained by the IUE satellite toward HD 163522 in the direction l = 349.6 deg and b = -9 deg are analyzed. The UV stellar spectrum of HD 163522 places the star beyond the Galactic center at a distance away from the Galactic plane of z = -1.5 kpc. An absorption-line spectrum with S/N approximately equal to 15-25 is produced. The UV interstellar absorption lines for neutral, and weakly and highly ionized gas are examined, as well as the correlation between profiles and the Galactic rotation. Simple model calculations are performed to quantitatively determine the characteristics of the profiles. The observed absorption-line profiles for Al III, Si IV, C IV, and N V are converted into plots of optical depths vs velocity. A comparison of these plots for the weak and strong member of each doublet reveals that the profiles are not strongly influenced by the presence of unresolved saturated absorption, and the optical depth profiles can therefore be directly converted into measures of N(v), the column density per km/s. The converted column densities are examined.

Tracking Gravity Probe B gyroscope polhode motion

The superconducting Gravity Probe B spacecraft is being developed to measure two untested predictions of Einstein's theory of general relativity by using orbiting gyroscopes; it possesses an intrinsic magnetic field which rotates with the rotor and is fixed with respect to the rotor body frame. In this paper, the path of the rotor spin axes is tracked using this trapped magnetic flux as a reference. Both the rotor motion and the magnetic field shape are estimated simultaneously, employing the higher order components of the magnetic field shape.

Earth Observing Scanning Polarimeter (EOSP), phase B

Evaluations performed during a Phase B study directed towards defining an optimal design for the Earth Observing Scanning Polarimeter (EOSP) instrument is summarized. An overview of the experiment approach is included which provides a summary of the scientific objectives, the background of the measurement approach, and the measurement method. In the instrumentation section, details of the design are discussed starting with the key instrument features required to accomplish the scientific objectives and a system characterization in terms of the Stokes vector/Mueller matrix formalism. This is followed by a detailing of the instrument design concept, the design of the individual elements of the system, the predicted performance, and a summary of appropriate instrument testing and calibration. The selected design makes use of key features of predecessor polarimeters and is fully compatible with the Earth Observing System spacecraft requirements.

The very high rotators in the late-B and early-A stars: Shell stars with Si IV and C IV features the case of HD 119921

Study of several stars in the late B and early A spectral types shows that very high rotators are associated with shell characteristics (sometimes not detected at all in the visible spectra) and also with C IV and some Si IV spectral absorption features which can be explained by circumstellar phenomena superimposed over stellar metallic blends. These particularities are evidenced by comparison with other spectra of low and high rotators in the same spectral range. HD 119921, a star with similar characteristics to the other ones of the sample, is given special attention. A possible scenario is suggested to explain the observed superionization features.

Comparison of high temperature, high frequency core loss and dynamic B-H loops of two 50 Ni-Fe crystalline alloys and an iron-based amorphous alloy

The availability of experimental data that characterizes the performance of soft magnetic materials for the combined conditions of high temperature and high frequency is almost nonexistent. An experimental investigation was conducted over the temperature range of 23 to 300 C and frequency range of 1 to 50 kHz to determine the effects of temperature and frequency on the core loss and dynamic B-H loops of three different soft magnetic materials; and oriented grain 50Ni-50Fe alloy, a nonoriented grain 50Ni-Fe alloy, and an iron based amorphous material (Metglas 2605SC). A comparison of these materials shows that the nonoriented grain 50Ni-50Fe alloy tends to have either the lowest or next lowest core loss for all temperatures and frequencies investigated.

Analysis of the COS B data for evidence of linear polarization of Vela pulsar gamma rays

The COS B spark chamber telescope observations of the Vela pulsar were analyzed for gamma-ray polarization. No significant quadrupole moment is found in the azimuthal distribution of the electron-positron pair production planes. However, analysis of the sensitivity indicates that even 100-percent polarization would not be detected. Therefore, the null result does not constrain the polarization of the Vela pulsar gamma-ray emission. This result contradicts the report of Caraveo et al. (1988) of possible evidence for polarization of the Vela pulsar gamma rays.

An 8-b 1.3-MHz successive-approximation A/D converter

A new successive-approximation A/D converter is described. It combines a string of equal-valued polysilicon resistors and a set of ratioed capacitors in a unique circuit configuration so that a high sampling rate is achieved. The comparator is realized by a chopper-stabilized amplifier to reduce the effect of the offset voltages of MOS amplifiers. The converter performs an 8-b monotonic conversion with a differential nonlinearity less than 1 LSB in 770 nsec. The die area is 3750 sq mil. This new conversion technique can also be utilized in a pipelined A/D converter (Temes, 1985) and enables it to achieve high speed.

Optimal thruster configurations for the GP-B spacecraft

Thruster locations and control schemes which make the most efficient use of the available propellant of a constant flow propulsion system are investigated. A set of three necessary and sufficient conditions are established for a thruster system to be optimal in the sense of maximizing the smallest magnitude force which can be generated by the thrusters. Analytical expressions are derived for the 'the envelope of least authority' which is defined as the smallest force magnitude versus moment magnitude which can be generated by any given thruster system. Several thruster configurations are proposed for the GP-B spacecraft and their performance is compared with respect to their envelopes of least authority. The results are applicable to any system composed of thrusters which saturate at some finite value.

Spectral types of stars in the SMC associations NGC456, NGC460a, b and NGC465

Spectral types of stars for an extended area (1200 sq arcmin) of the SMC, containing the associations NGC456, NGC460 a, b and NGC465 have been derived here. High-quality UJ and YJ film copies of objective prism plates taken with the 1.2-m UK Schmidt telescope were used. The medium dispersion spectral (830 A/mm) were digitized with a PDS microdensitometer and spectra types of stars were obtained down to about 16.5 mag. A computer interactive method of reduction has been developed, and the spectral types obtained are accurate to 0.3 spectral subtypes. Spectral classification for the low (2440 A/mm) dispersion spectra down to 18.5 mag was carried out visually using a binocular microscope. The frequency distributions of stars in the associations region, after subtracting the field stars, have revealed that only blue main sequence stars are their members.

Ultraviolet interstellar absorption toward HD 156359, a halo star at 11 kiloparsecs in the direction l = 329 deg and b = -15 deg

Results based on high-quality multiple IUE high-dispersion spectra are presented for the HD 156359 sight line in the direction l = 328.7 deg and b = -14.5 deg. The UV stellar spectrum of HD 156359 is consistent with an MK classification of O9.7 Ib-II. The high-ionization UV interstellar absorption line in the star's UV spectrum are very broad with negative velocity extensions. Comparison of apparent column density profiles Na(v) for lines within each doublet indicates that there is no significant unresolved saturated structure in the Si IV or N V profiles. Direct integration of the Na(v) profiles for Si IV, C IV, and N V over velocities from -150 km/s to +40 km/s yields total column densities of log N = 14.10, 14.77, and 14.09, respectively. The definite detection of N V absorption lines with profile shapes similar to the Si IV and C IV profiles favors a common origin for all three species.

First results from the Goddard High-Resolution spectrograph - High-resolution observations of the 1942 A resonance line of HG II in the chemically peculiar B star, Chi Lupi

The Goddard High-Resolution Spectrograph on the HST has been used to obtain high S/N observations of the sharp-lined, Hg- and Pt-rich B-type star, Chi Lupi, with a resolving power of 87,000. The observations reveal a level of spectroscopic detail never before observed at ultraviolet wavelengths for any star other than the sun. Concentrating on the region around the resonance line of Hg II at 1942 A, the profile and central position of this line confirm beyond doubt that the Hg isotope anomaly in Chi Lupi is real and extreme, with Hg being heavily concentrated in the form of Hg-204. The problems in atomic physics which impair the accurate analysis of spectra of this quality are emphasized.

Electron impact excitation and dissociation of N2 via the b 1Pi(u) state

Electron impact excitation of the b 1Pi(u) state in N2 plays a prominent role in the dissociation of the molecule and thus in the production of atomic nitrogen in planetary atmospheres. Electron impact excitation cross sections combined with electron-impact-induced fluorescence measurements can yield the corresponding dissociation cross sections. Serious discrepancies exist among excitation cross sections reported in the literature. To clarify the situation, these cross sections were measured at two impact energies using electron energy loss spectroscopy. The new results are in agreement with recent values deduced from optical measurements and fall midway between previous results which are too high or low by factors of 2.

On the most general tensor B(sub ij) which is zero for i does not equal j, and the most general isotropic tensor I(sub ij)

It is shown that the most general second order tensor B sub ij which is zero for i not = j is proportional to the Kronecker delta (Delta sub ij). By a slight modification of that argument, the known result was obtained that the most general second order isotropic tensor is also proportional to Delta sub ij. These results are useful for instance in obtaining the stress tensor for a viscous fluid.
