Configurable luminaire with light sources variably oriented with respect to an array of concave mirrors

An array of LEDs is supported by a support mechanism that both supports conductors leading to the LEDs and sinks heat from the LEDs. The support mechanism may be a transparent heat-conducting sheet or an array of cantilevered arms at different angles that support the LEDs and sink heat. This reduces the blockage of light. The LEDs are positioned generally in the focal plane of an array of concave mirrors that collimate the light. The LEDs and array of mirrors are translatable with respect to one another to steer the aggregate light beam to customize the emission. The LEDs may be variably oriented with respect to the associated mirror apertures so as to create different light beams emitted from different ones of the mirrors.

Co-notch and independent windowing to mitigate interference in SAR-based imagery

Various technologies for mitigating distortion in coherent image products generated from SAR data are described herein. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) datasets generated based upon SAR returns from first and second passes of a SAR platform over a scene are received. The SAR datasets can be co-notched at matching sample indices to improve coherence of SAR images generated from the datasets. Windowed SAR data is generated by applying independent windows to subsets of each of the datasets to reduce sidelobe levels of their image impulse responses. Coherent image products are generated based upon the windowed SAR data, wherein an image quality of the coherent image products is improved as compared to coherent image products generated based upon the SAR datasets.

Broad band tunable energy electron beam pulser

An electromagnetic mechanical pulser implements a transverse wave metallic comb stripline TWMCS kicker having inwardly opposing teeth that retards a phase velocity of an RF traveling wave to match the kinetic velocity of a continuous electron beam, causing the beam to oscillate before being chopped into pulses by an aperture. The RF phase velocity is substantially independent of RF frequency and amplitude, thereby enabling independent tuning of the electron pulse widths and repetition rate. The TWMCS further comprises an electron pulse picker (EPP) that applies a pulsed transverse electric field across the TWMCS to deflect electrons out of the beam, allowing only selected electrons and/or groups of electrons to pass through. The EPP pulses can be synchronized with the RF traveling wave and/or with a pumping trigger of a transverse electron microscope (TEM), for example to obtain dynamic TEM images in real time.

Hydraulic Response to Thermal Stimulation Efforts at Raft River Based on Stepped Rate Injection Testing

The injection well stimulation project at the Raft River geothermal field tests the effect of long-term cold water injection and high pressure injection on well injectivity, improvements to which could reduce operating costs. The primary data for analysis and interpretation of the injection test are step-rate flow tests run before each new phase of the injection. These tests were analyzed using a combination of standard pump-test analytical solution methods and methods developed expressly for the observed conditions. The stepped rate injection tests, combined with long-term flow and pressure response data suggest that the well is located within a fractured formation of low transmissivity but high storativity. These calculated parameters appeared to increase with pressure during the first injection test and the higher values were reproduced during the second stepped rate test. Calculated transmissivity and storativity are on the order of 4E-5 m cm 2 and 1E-4 m Pa -1 , respectively. The apparent pressure dependence of fitted hydraulic parameters may reflect near-well fracture compliance that increased the effective radius of the wellbore during the first test. While the type curve fit analysis also suggests that the reservoir behaves as a uniformly fractured reservoir with a radial flow regime, the hydraulic parameters indicate that condition may exist only a very limited distance (<10 m) from the well. Longer-term pressure response suggests that flow in the system effectively reaches steady state in a period of less than a day, which may reflect pressure stabilization resulting from pressure-dependent permeability or a region of much higher permeability located with a few meters of the well. The transmissivity estimates obtained from this analysis, converted to approximate fracture density and aperture, provide useful constraints on the distance to which the thermal front may migrate from the well during the cold water injection phase of the stimulation project. We estimate that the cooling front will migrate less than a tenth of a kilometer over an approximately one-year injection period. Here, the effects of that cooling, however, may be substantial, because increases in permeability have maximum effect nearest the well.

A BEAM SCREEN TO PREPARE THE RHIC VACUUM CHAMBER FOR EIC HADRON BEAMS: CONCEPTUAL DESIGN AND REQUIREMENTS

The Electron Ion Collider (EIC) Hadron Storage Ring (HSR) will use the existing Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider storage rings, including the superconducting magnet arcs [1]. The vacuum chambers in the superconducting magnets and the cold mass interconnects were not designed for EIC beams and so must be updated to reduce resistive-wall heating and to suppress e-clouds. To do so without compromising the EIC luminosity goal, a stainless steel beam screen with colaminated copper and a thin layer of amorphous carbon will be installed. This paper describes the main requirements that our solution for the hadron ring vacuum chamber needs to satisfy, including impedance, aperture limitations, vacuum, thermal and structural stability, mechanical design, installation and operation. The conceptual design of the beam screen currently under development is introduced.

THERMAL ANALYSIS OF THE RHIC ARC DIPOLE MAGNET COLD MASS WITH THE EIC BEAM SCREEN

The EIC will make use of the existing RHIC storage rings with their superconducting (SC) magnet arcs. A stain-less-steel beam screen with co-laminated copper and a thin amorphous carbon (aC) film on the inner surface will be installed in the beam pipe of the SC magnets. The copper will reduce the beam-induced resistive-wall (RW) heating from operation with the higher intensity EIC beams, that if not addressed would make the magnets quench. Limiting the RW heating is also important to achieve an adequately low vacuum level. The aC coating will reduce secondary electron yield which could also cause heating and limit in-tensity. Among all the RHIC SC magnets, the arc dipoles present the biggest challenge to the design and installation of beam screens. The arc dipoles, which make up for 78% (2.5 km) length of all SC magnets in RHIC, expect the larg-est RW heating due to their smallest aperture. These mag-nets are also the longest (9.45 m each), thus experiencing the largest temperature rise over their length, and have a large sagitta (48.5 mm) that increases the difficulty to in-stall the beam screen in place. This paper presents a de-tailed thermal analysis of the magnet-screen system.

An automated approach to the alignment of compound refractive lenses

Compound refractive lenses (CRLs) are established X-ray focusing optics, and are thus a key element of many beamlines at X-ray facilities, used to either to focus a beam or image a sample. While CRLs are quite established, the stack of single lens elements affords a very small numerical aperture because of the thick lens profile, making them far more difficult to align than classical optical lenses that obey the thin-lens approximation. This means that the alignment must be very precise and is highly sensitive to changes to the incident beam; aligning CRLs is thus typically treated as a time-consuming manual process. Many groups circumvent day-to-day realignment by using engineering controls (e.g. mounting optics) that sacrifice some of the beam’s focusing characteristics, i.e. spot size, or resolution. While these choices minimize setup time, there are clear disadvantages. This work presents a new automated approach to align CRLs using a simple alignment apparatus that is easy to adapt and install at different types of X-ray experiments or facilities. Our approach builds on recent CRL modeling efforts, using an approach based on the Stochastic Nelder-Mead (SNM) simplex method. We demonstrate the efficacy of this method by numerical simulation and then extend this test to real experiments conducted at the Advanced Photon Source to confirm its performance with a synchrotron X-ray beam. This work provides an opportunity to automate key instrumentation at X-ray facilities.

Innovative nanopore sequencing technology including a self-assembled porous membrane

Methods and apparatus for long read, label-free, optical nanopore long chain molecule sequencing. In general, the present disclosure describes a novel sequencing technology based on the integration of nanochannels to deliver single long-chain molecules with widely spaced (>wavelength), ˜1-nm aperture “tortuous” nanopores that slow translocation sufficiently to provide massively parallel, single base resolution using optical techniques. A novel, directed self-assembly nanofabrication scheme using simple colloidal nanoparticles is used to form the nanopore arrays atop nanochannels that unfold the long chain molecules. At the surface of the nanoparticle array, strongly localized electromagnetic fields in engineered plasmonic/polaritonic structures allow for single base resolution using optical techniques.

Metal-olsalazine coordination polymers for medical applications

Olsalazine (H 4 olz), a prodrug of the anti-inflammatory 5-aminosalicylic acid, is used as a ligand to synthesize a suite of M(H 2 olz) and M 2 (olz) materials, where M is a dication (e.g. Mg, Ca, Sr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn). A family of metal olsalazine coordination polymers, coordination solids, and metal organic frameworks are described, which include 1-, 2-, and 3-dimensional structures. The materials resist degradation at acidic pH and release olsalazine preferentially at neutral pH. The mesoporous M 2 (olz) frameworks exhibit high surface areas with hexagonal pore apertures that are approximately 27 Å in diameter and contain coordinatively unsaturated metal sites. Biologically active molecules containing a Lewis-basic functional group can be grafted directly to the open metal sites of the frameworks. Dissolution of the frameworks under physiological conditions releases olsalazine (H 4 olz) and the grafted molecules so that multiple therapeutic components can be delivered together at different rates.

FNAL PIP-II Accumulator Ring

The FNAL accelerator complex is poised to reach MW neutrino beams on target for the exploration of the dark sector physics and rare physics program spaces. Future operations of the complex will include CW linac operations at beam intensities that have not been seen before \cite{PIP2,RCS_LOI}. The ambitious beam program relies on multi-turn H$^{-}$ injection into the FNAL Booster and then extracted into delivery rings or the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) 8 GeV HEP program. A new rapid-cycling synchrotron (RCS) will be required to reach the LBNF goal of 2.4 MW because of intense space-charge limitations. There are many accelerator engineering challenges that are already known and many that will be discovered. This proposal calls for an intermediate step that will both facilitate the operation of Booster in the PIP-II era and gain operational experience associated with high power injection rings. This step includes the design, construction and installation of a 0.8 GeV accumulator ring (upgradeable to 1+ GeV) to be located in the PIP-II Booster Transfer Line (BTL). The PIP-II accumulator ring (PAR) may be primarily designed around permanent magnets or use standard iron core magnet technology with an aperture selected to accommodate the desired high intensity protons at 0.8 GeV.
