CJ concept for advanced aircraft wiring

The techniques and hardware are described which were developed for facilitating the use of flexible flat conductor cable (FFCC) in commercial air transports. The system was designed as an evolutionary transition from the current round wire harnessing to the use of FFCC harnesses. The equipment discussed includes the pressure crimp barrel designed for terminating FFCC, reel-fed applicator, cable connectors and adaptors, and equipment racks.

Flow through a wire-form transpiration-cooled vane

Results of recent research to develop techniques for analyzing coolant flow in transpiration-cooled vanes are summarized. Flow characteristics of the wire-form porous material are correlated; the effects on the flow characteristics of oxidation, coolant temperature, gas crossflow, and airfoil curvature are evaluated. An analytical method is presented for predicting coolant flows and pressures in a strut-supported vane.

Design and flight experience with a digital fly-by-wire control system in an F-8 airplane

A digital fly-by-wire flight control system was designed, built, and for the first time flown in an airplane. The system, which uses components from the Apollo guidance system, is installed in an F-8 airplane as the primary control system. A lunar module guidance computer is the central element in the three-axis, single-channel, multimode, digital control system. A triplex electrical analog system which provides unaugmented control of the airplane is the only backup to the digital system. Flight results showed highly successful system operation, although the trim update rate was inadequate for precise trim changes, causing minor concern. The use of a digital system to implement conventional control laws proved to be practical for flight. Logic functions coded as an integral part of the control laws were found to be advantageous. Although software verification required extensive effort, confidence in the software was achieved.

MIDAS, prototype Multivariate Interactive Digital Analysis System, phase 1. Volume 3: Wiring diagrams

The Midas System is a third-generation, fast, multispectral recognition system able to keep pace with the large quantity and high rates of data acquisition from present and projected sensors. A principal objective of the MIDAS Program is to provide a system well interfaced with the human operator and thus to obtain large overall reductions in turn-around time and significant gains in throughput. The hardware and software generated in Phase I of the overall program are described. The system contains a mini-computer to control the various high-speed processing elements in the data path and a classifier which implements an all-digital prototype multivariate-Gaussian maximum likelihood decision algorithm operating at 2 x 100,000 pixels/sec. Sufficient hardware was developed to perform signature extraction from computer-compatible tapes, compute classifier coefficients, control the classifier operation, and diagnose operation. The MIDAS construction and wiring diagrams are given.

Computer Program for Thin Wire Antenna over a Perfectly Conducting Ground Plane

A computer program is presented for a thin-wire antenna over a perfect ground plane. The analysis is performed in the frequency domain, and the exterior medium is free space. The antenna may have finite conductivity and lumped loads. The output data includes the current distribution, impedance, radiation efficiency, and gain. The program uses sinusoidal bases and Galerkin's method.

Hot-wire coil probe for high-speed flows

Small-diameter-wire coil probes developed for use in a hypersonic helium tunnel are discussed. The springlike properties of the coil minimize strain-gauge effects, and allow to use a higher length-to-diameter ratio for a given flow. In addition, the coil is more rugged for sudden flow changes, and since it can be mounted straight across the support tips, there is less support interference in cross flows. In addition to measuring fluctuating quantities in a boundary layer, the probes were used with a constant temperature anemometer for measuring mean mass flow profiles, and with a constant current anemometer for measuring mean total temperature profiles.

High speed photographic study of hot wire dynamic behavior

Investigation of hot wire dynamic behavior under high-current heating aimed at a better understanding of the ignition process, using high-speed photographic techniques for visual observation of the bridgewire itself during high current heating. Tests were conducted with Tophet A bridgewires in an air environment, as well as in a cell of distilled water at room temperature, and with a boron-potassium perchlorate-Viton pyrotechnic against the bridgewire behind a Plexiglas window.

Hot-wire anemometry for in-flight measurement of aircraft wake vortices

An airborne hot-wire anemometry system capable of providing data concerning the vortex structure in the wake of a preceding aircraft has been used in several flight studies. The design features of this technique and the operational experience with it are described. This development program has resulted in a flight-test technique that can make accurate velocity measurements in flow regimes where large velocity gradients occur.

Design and development experience with a digital fly-by-wire control system in an F-8C airplane

To assess the feasibility of a digital fly-by-wire system, the mechanical flight control system of an F-8C airplane was replaced with a digital system and an analog backup system. The Apollo computer was used as the heart of the primary system. This paper discusses the experience gained during the design and development of the system and relates it to active control systems that are anticipated for future civil transport applications.

Flight test experience with the F-8 digital fly-by-wire system

Flight test results of the F-8 digital fly-by-wire (DFBW) control system are presented and the implications for application to active control technology (ACT) are discussed. The F-8 DFBW system has several of the attributes of proposed ACT systems, so the flight test experience is helpful in assessing the capabilities of those systems. Topics of discussion include the predicted and actual flight performance of the control system, assessments of aircraft flying qualities and other piloting factors, software management and control, and operational experience.
