Rapid viscosity measurements of powdered thermosetting resins

A rapid and inexpensive method of obtaining processing-related data on powdered thermosetting resins has been investigated. The method involved viscosity measurements obtained with a small specimen (less than 100 mg) parallel plate plastometer. A data acquisition and reduction system was developed which provided a value of viscosity and strain rate about 12-13 second intervals during a test. The effects of specimen compaction pressure and reduction of adhesion between specimen and parallel plates were examined. The plastometer was used to measure some processing-related viscosity changes of an addition polyimide resin, including changes caused by pre-test heat treatment, test temperature, and strain rate.

Aircraft motion analysis using limited flight and radar data

The development and application of methods for reconstructing, from a limited set of recorded data, a comprehensive scenario of aircraft motions before and during an accident are described. The accuracy of these analytical methods is investigated using data recorded onboard the Ames CV-990 research aircraft. In these experiments, the expanded set of data, derived from either foil or ATC records, is compared with corresponding values measured by the research instrumentation system onboard the aircraft. The results indicate that many of the derived quantities are in good agreement with the corresponding onboard measurements. A recent application of this procedure using actual accident records is presented and potential applications are briefly reviewed.

Comparison of analytical predictions of longitudinal short period pilot-induced oscillations with results from a simulation study of the space shuttle orbiter

An analytical analysis of conditions producing pilot induced oscillations (PIO's) was made for the space shuttle orbiter in a landing approach configuration for the task of milling the elevation angle of the line of sight to a target vehicle. The analysis yielded a value of PIO frequency and a value for the amount of total system time delay (pilot + control system) that can be tolerated before instability results. Calculations were performed showing the effect of varying the range to the target and of varying the handling qualities of the orbiter vehicle. Analytical predictions were compared with simulation results obtained using a visual motion simulator.

Convenient stability criteria for difference approximations of hyperbolic initial-boundary value problems

New convenient stability criteria are provided in this paper for a large class of finite difference approximations to initial-boundary value problems associated with the hyperbolic system u sub t = au sub x + Bu + f in the quarter plane x or = 0, t or = 0. Using the new criteria, stability is easily established for numerous combinations of well known basic schemes and boundary conditions, thus generalizing many special cases studied in recent literature.

Voyager photopolarimeter stellar occultation of Saturn's rings

On Aug. 25, 1981, the Voyager 2 photopolarimeter system observed a stellar occultation by Saturn's rings. A brief description of this experiment along with details of the data reduction are presented. The occultation results are given in tabular and graphical form at a resolution of 60 km. Histograms of the frequency of optical depth show dominantly unimodal distributions in each of the classical ring elements. The frequency distribution of the entire ring system shows three modes at tau values of about 0.08, 0.5, and more than 2.5.

Cryogenic telescope on the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS)

The Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) has completed an unbiased all-sky survey at wavelengths from 10 to 100 microns. The design and performance of the focal plane array is described with emphasis on in-orbit measurements of the sensitivity and stability. In the four broad spectral bands centered at 12, 25, 60, and 100 microns, the system noise equivalent flux density (NEFD) values are in Jy/(Square root of Hz), 0.03, 0.025, 0.046, and 0.21, respectively (Jansky = 10 to the -26th W/sq m/Hz). For point sources, a single scan at the survey rate of 3.8 arcmin/s yields limiting flux densities at the 3-sigma confidence level of 0.36, 0.30, 0.39, and 1.2 Jy. The dc stability of the junction field effect transistor (JFET) amplifiers and the excellent off-axis rejection of the telescope permit total flux measurements of extended infrared emission at levels below 6,000,000 Jy/sr. Response of the extrinsic silicon and germanium photo-detectors to ionizing radiation is described.

Design of an optimal output feedback control system with modal insensitivity

This paper deals with the design of an output feedback controller which results in selected modal insensitivity, and at the same time optimizes a quadratic performance index representative of desired system performance for nominal plant parameter values. The approach taken here is to characterize the class of attainable eigenvectors for a given set of eigenvalues (distinct or non-distinct) which lie in a subspace called the 'Modal Insensitivity Subspace'. A constraint is established on the feedback matrix which results in modal insensitivity. Necessary conditions for optimality subject to the constraint on the feedback matrix are given. This forms the basis for a numerical algorithm to compute the optimal feedback gain which analyzed for convergence. To illustrate the procedure, a design is carried out using the lateral dynamics of an L-1011 aircraft.

Automated dynamic analytical model improvement for damped structures

A method is described to improve a linear nonproportionally damped analytical model of a structure. The procedure finds the smallest changes in the analytical model such that the improved model matches the measured modal parameters. Features of the method are: (1) ability to properly treat complex valued modal parameters of a damped system; (2) applicability to realistically large structural models; and (3) computationally efficiency without involving eigensolutions and inversion of a large matrix.

Spectroscopic orbits for 16 more binaries in the Hyades field

A photoelectric survey of the radial velocities of Hyades candidates has provided data for 16 spectroscopic binary orbits, in addition to the 11 known binaries in the Hyades field. The majority of photoelectric observations in the survey were carried out at the Cambridge and Palomar Observatories using different data reduction techniques for determining radial velocities. It is found that two of the objects, vB 164 and J336, are definitely not members of the Hyades cluster; two other objects, HD 16909 and J301, appear to be located far from the center of the cluster, but still deserve classification as Hyades members. The gamma-velocity of HD 16909 differed slightly from the value expected for a member of the Hyades cluster. An additional twelve systems were definitely identified as members of the Hyades. The radial velocity values for all the candidate stars are given in a series of tables.

Modal insensitivity with optimality

This paper deals with the design of a constant gain, feedback controller which results in selected modal insensitivity, and at the same time optimizes a quadratic performance index representative of desired system performance for nominal plant parameter values. Both full state and output feedback control are considered. A constraint is established for the feedback gain matrix that results in modal insensitivity, and necessary conditions for optimality subject to this constraint are given. This forms the basis for a numerical algorithm to compute the optimal feedback gain. To illustrate the procedure, a design is carried out using the lateral dynamics of an L-1011 aircraft.

Implicit dual control for general stochastic systems

A new implicit dual technique is presented for stochastic adaptive control synthesis. In this technique, denoted as the method of utility costs (MOUC), a new control policy is derived from a known starting control policy by using a single iteration in time-varying policy space. An important result is that the new control policy yields a corresponding improvement in adaptive performance relative to the known starting policy. Since the starting policy can be chosen arbitrarily, the new policy has potentially superior performance relative to any existing design. Unlike other implicit dual designs, the MOUC can be applied to systems having constrained inputs, discontinuities, discrete valued disturbances, as well as in situations where the variances of the associated process statistics are large. A numerical example is given in which a controller is synthesized to provide improved performance relative to the Open-Loop Feedback policy of Dreyfus.

New stability criteria for difference approximations of hyperbolic initial-boundary value problems

New convenient stability criteria are provided for a large class of finite difference approximations to initial-boundary value problems associated with the hyperbolic system u sub t = Au sub x + Bu + f in the quarter plane x greater than or equal to 0, t greater than or equal to 0. The criteria are used to easily establish stability for numerous combinations of well known basic schemes and boundary conditions, thus generalizing many special cases studied in the recent literature. A number of examples are examined, including the unitary unconditionally stable Crank-Nicholson scheme and an almost-dissipative unconditionally stable backward Euler scheme.

Using PCDS to study the influence of UV flux variation on the middle atmosphere

The value of the Pilot Climate Data System (PCDS) in examining the influences of short-period solar flux variations on the middle atmosphere was demonstrated. Several Nimbus satellite data sets proposed for the study exist in the PCDS. Planned for retrieval through the PCDS are ozone mixing ratios and cumulative ozone profiles available from the Backscatter Ultraviolet Spectrophotometer on Nimbus-4. Also to be accessed are Nimbus-7 data sets that will provide ozone and nitrogen dioxide mixing ratios, temperature profiles from the Limb Infrared Monitor of the Stratosphere, and ozone mixing ratio profiles from the Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet Spectrophotometer. Bypassing the time-consuming process of reading raw data tapes, the researchers plan to transfer the PCDS processed data to an IBM PC at Iowa State University. The IBM PC will serve as an intermediate vehicle for transferring the data to the NOAA CYBER 840 at Boulder, Colorado, where research will continue on both an eight-layer radiative-photochemical numerical model and on a nonlinear dynamical model. in this research are the FGGE and ERB data sets. These relevant data sets also reside in the PCDS. Problems associated with remote access to the PCDS were discussed in regard to all the PCDS data sets.
